Sunday: 78 Iraqis, 2 GIs, 2 Australian Contractors Killed; 64 Iraqis Wounded

During violence that targeted mostly civilians, 78 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 64 more were wounded. Two Americans servicemembers were killed in separate incidents. An IED killed two Australian contractors as well as injuring another Australian and a Filipino. Also, a U.S. F-16 crashed upon take-off at Balad, but the pilot ejected safely.

A Task Force Lightning soldier was killed today in Ninewah province during security operations. Yesterday, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) soldier died after an IED blasted his vehicle in Baghdad.

In Baghdad, a car bomb in Hussein Square killed 10 and wounded 25 others. In Bayaa, an attack on a checkpoint left three dead, including a policeman, and several wounded. In nearby, il-Ilam a policeman was gunned down. In Adil, one civilian was killed and another wounded during an armed attack. Another two people were wounded in a attack in Saidiya. No one was injured when Sunni politician Adnan al-Dulaimi’s convoy was blasted by a roadside bomb. Eight bodies bearing the usual gunshot and torture marks were found in the Washash area, while 14 others, including two women, were found scattered elsehwere in the capital. Also, robbers attacked a money courier downtown.

An attack on a troop of border guards in Banjwin left seven Kurdistani guards and one civilian dead, after an hour of intense fighting. Four guards were wounded. Kurdistan is normally peaceful in comparison to the rest of Iraq.

A roadside bomb in Mosul left one policeman dead and another injured. Eleven al-Qaeda suspects were arrested. Also, four bodies were found.

Gunmen killed the wife and eight-year-old son of the mayor of Aziziya.

In Tal Afar, two people were killed and three wounded when they were blasted by an IED. An Iraqi policeman was killed and another wounded during an ambush attack.

A roadside bomb near Baiji killed an oil truck driver.

An army officer from the Saddam days was killed in a drive-by shooting that occurred in front of his Fallujah home. One policeman was killed and another wounded in a separate attack.

Security and Coalition forces detained 59 suspects in various locations. Meanwhile 24 Iranian detainees escaped near the Iranian border near Badra.

British targets in Basra came under the usual attacks, but no casualties were reported.

A lawmaker’s convoy was attacked in Ninewah, but no one was injured.

In Baquba, a Diyar TV reporter and an AP photographer were kidnapped. An IED injured five policemen. Also, two bodies were brought in to the morgue.

Three policemen were killed and eight more were injured during an IED attack north of Baquba.

Four policemen were killed in Nasariyah.

In Mahmudiya, two civilians were injured in an IED explosion.

A roadside bomb targeting police commandos in Jisr Diyala killed a civilian and wounded two others instead.

In Khalis, eight civilians were were injured during mortar fire.

North of Khanqeen, two shepherds were killed and one was injured during an IED explosion.

PUK party headquarters were attacked in Kirkuk, a Peshmerga fighter was killed.
