Residents of Baghdad’s Amiriya neighborhood spent a second day holed up indoors in fear of ongoing clashes between rival militant groups. No casualties were as yet reported there, but at least 114 Iraqis were killed in other incidents and 87 more were wounded. Three American soldiers were killed and one Bulgarian soldier was reported injured in separate incidents.
The U.S. military reported that one MNC-I soldier was killed by small arms fire in Zawiyah. Another soldier was killed in Baghdad yesterday when he was struck by small arms fire. Also, a third soldier died in attack on Wednesday, bring May’s GI tally to 126 deaths. One Bulgarian soldier was reported injured in a traffic accident.
In Baghdad, The Umm al-Maalif neighborhood was showered with mortars; 10 were killed and 30 wounded. An IED in al-Khadra neighborhood killed one civilian and injured two more. In Saba al-Bour, mortars killed one and injured two. An IED injured four police commandos in Doura. Mortars fell in an Iraqi army camp, but no casualties were reported. During continued fighting in Amiriya, at least 27 more people have died. Also, 15 bodies were recovered.
Near Kirkuk at Uweidla village, a suicide truck bomber killed five people and wounded 25 others. Five oil protection soldiers were kidnapped in a separate incident.
Six decomposing bodies were found together in Baquba. At least nine other bodies were brought in to the morgue. Also, a suicide truck bomber attacked what is thought to be an al-Qaeda safehouse; at least two were killed.
Three truck drivers were kidnapped near Dujail.
An unidentified body bearing torture marks was found near Kirkuk in the Musalla area.
Two men were killed as they planted a roadside bomb in Madaen.
A suicide truck bomber is believed to have been targeting a police lieutenant colonel’s home in Shurkat. The bomb exploded before arriving at the home but the blast killed 12 civilians.
An IED blasted an Iraqi army convoy, killing two soldiers and injuring five more in Sulaiman Bek.
In al-Urouba, a bomb exploded in front a policeman’s home, but no casualties were reported.
One policeman was injured in Kirkuk during an IED attack. One dead body was found. Five policemen were wounded in an IED attack. Also, gunmen attacked a car carrying the son of a former lawmaker; he was injured and his bodyguard was killed.
One soldier was killed and one injured when gunmen attacked them near al-Shajra.
Gunmen killed a policeman in Mosul.
Also, Turkish troops are massing at the Iraqi border in preparation for cross-border offensives against Kurdish rebels they believe are trying to destabilize Kurdish regions in Turkey. At least two rebels were killed on Turkish soil so far.
