In Iraq today, at least 62 Iraqis were killed or found dead and another 42 wounded in violent attacks. Also, three GIs and one British soldier were killed in separate incidents; another two Britons and one American were wounded.
Three U.S. airmen were killed and one was wounded by a car bomb in Baghdad. Meanwhile, a roadside bomb went off near a U.S. patrol in Iskandariyah, but no casualties were reported there. At least 3000 American servicemember deaths have been confirmed by the Dept of Defense. Another 12 deaths have been reported and await confirmation, which can sometimes take several weeks. Also, the British Ministry of Defense announced that one British soldier died and two more were injured in a non-combat-related traffic accident this morning. U.S forces, using tear gas, also dispersed a demonstration in Nahrawan; two people suffered from asphyxia.
Near al Shaab stadium in Baghdad, senior Education Ministry official, Habib al-Shimiri, survived a roadside bomb blast that killed two bodyguards. Another roadside bomb killed two people and wounded two more in central Baghdad. Four people were killed and five wounded when mortars fell on a Karrada district warehouse, and five members of one family were killed by mortars falling in southern Baghdad.
Also in the capital, clashes broke out between armed militia and residents in the Amil and Rahmaniya neighborhoods; at least three of the residents were killed and ten injured. Gunmen sprayed bullets as they drove through a marketplace; three Sunni shopkeepers were killed and a pedestrian wounded. In another drive-by shooting, a guard at the Iraqi Finance Ministry was killed. A doctor from the Yarmouk hospital was gunned down in a separate incident. Also, 17 dumped bodies were recovered.
In Samarra, police commandos killed one person at a protest denouncing Saddam Hussein’s execution. Gunmen killed a police officer in a separate incident.
Two people were killed and 12 wounded in a car bomb blast at a Hilla marketplace. Also, a councilman was wounded during an assassination attempt.
At least five gunshot bodies were found on the outskirts of Mosul. Gunmen killed an Iraqi guard outside the Kurdistan National Union headquarters and wounded a policeman in separate incidents. Also, gunmen fired upon a car carrying five soldiers, two of the soldiers were killed.
Five Kurdish citizens were wounded when gunmen attacked their car in Wehdah.
A Shi’ite cleric and his son were gunned down as they were headed to a shrine in Mahaweel.
In Tuz Khurmato, gunmen wounded four worshippers who were exiting a mosque.
A headless body was found in Riyadh.
And four bodies were found in Suwayra.
