Antiwar.com has found that at least 6,315 people were killed, and 1,457 more were wounded in Iraq during June. These figures include civilians, security personnel, and militants, who were killed in fighting or attacks.
At least 497 civilians were killed, and 513 more were wounded, according to various media sources. Security forces lost 707 personnel, and another 248 were wounded. The number of militant fatalities is estimated at 5,111 dead and 153 wounded.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) released its June figures on Friday. Their workers found 382 civilians were killed, and 1,145 more were wounded. Security forces lost 280 personnel, and 312 were wounded. The U.N. does not attempt to compile militant casualties, nor those in Anbar. The Health Directorate in Anbar, however, reported 15 civilians deaths and 342 injured.
The Battle for Fallujah made the gleaning of casualty figures especially challenging. Reports on the number of militant fatalities varied wildly. Lieutenant General Abdul Wahab al-Saidi, who was in charge of the operation in Fallujah, placed the number of militants killed there at around 1,800 dead. At the same time, little information was given on casualties among security personnel. Also, there may be no true figures on the number of civilian dead either. In some cases, families were forced to bury loved ones on their properties. Other civilians disappeared after fleeing the city.
Combing the highest figures from media sources and the U.N., Antiwar.com finds that at least 6,315 were killed and 1,457 were wounded during June. These figures should be considered low estimates. The true number of dead may never be known.
