Attacks in Sunni areas of Iraq and in Mosul overshadowed election news. At least 16 Iraqis were killed and 43 more were wounded across the country. Meanwhile, the U.S. prison in Taji and its 2,900 Iraqi detainees were handed over to Iraqi authorities. Also, a Shi’ite group that held a British hostage for over two years denied any claims of abuse.
A suicide car bomber struck a busy street in Fallujah, killing eight and wounding 28 others. The blast also damaged 17 vehicles. A curfew is in effect. The bomber wore a suicide vest into a crowd of day laborers, leaving his vehicle behind to explode shortly afterwards.
In Mosul, a blast targeting police killed a civilian instead. A jailor was killed at his Islahi home while off duty. A civilian was wounded in a blast in Dhubat neighborhood. A bomb in Hadbaa killed one policeman and wounded three others. A policeman was killed during a grenade attack in Khazraj. A contractor was injured as he fought off kidnappers. Gunmen killed a storeowner. A bomb in Tal al-Rouman injured a policeman and two children.
In Baghdad, a sticky bomb left on a civil defense vehicle wounded seven civilians in Mansour.
A Sunni sheikh was gunned down after morning prayers in Khalidiya.
Gunmen killed a man inside his shop in Kirkuk.
An intelligence officer held on abduction charges in a Basra prison was involved with a failed jailbreak.
A mortar shell and other ammunition caches were found in Karbala.
