Light violence left at least 12 Iraqis dead and five wounded today. More casualties were reported in an attack in Duluiya. Two U.S. soldiers were killed in a vehicular accident aw well. Also, British authorities opened an inquiry into allegations that British troops tortured and killed Iraqi civilians. Meanwhile, the two largest Iraqi parties are both claiming to lead in vote counts.
A roadside bomb in Fallujah killed one policeman and wounded a second. South of the city, two civilians were killed and another was wounded in a small arms attack. Separately, an armed group commander was captured.
Three policemen were killed during a bomb and small arms attack in nearby Hissy.
In Mosul, one policeman and one gunman were killed in a shootout at a checkpoint. Gunmen killed a civilian. The army killed a man driving a car bomb and then disposed of the explosives. Five al-Qaeda suspects were captured. Scores of Christian families returned to the city to participate in elections; they had fled during a surge of anti-Christian attacks earlier this year.
Two bodyguards were wounded during an assassination attempt on the Riyadh police director.
A car was destroyed in Duluiya when thermal bomb exploded near it. An unknown number of people were wounded inside the car.
In Baghdad, two gunmen were killed and a policeman was wounded during an attack on a checkpoint in Karrada; a third gunman was arrested.
Sixteen suspects were detained in Basra province.
Two rockets were found in Kirkuk.
