Thursday: 9 Iraqis Killed, 28 Wounded

At least nine Iraqis were killed and 28 more were wounded in a small surge of violence today. Meanwhile, Iraqis are demonstrating against the deadly attacks that rattled Baghdad earlier this week.

A bomb disposal team in Shirqat accidentally set off a bomb, killing three policemen and wounding six more. At least one more person was killed and three others were wounded in this or another explosion.

A pair of bombs in Hit killed the mayor of Kubaisa and his driver. A separate blast killed a policeman and wounded another. Four soldiers were wounded in yet another bombing.

In Fallujah, gunmen wounded three policemen at a checkpoint. When soldiers arrived at the scene, a bomb blast wounded three of them. Other bombs left no casualties.

In Baghdad, a sticky bomb wounded five people, including two interior ministry officers, in Za’afaraniyah. A car bomb near the provincial council building was dismantled.

The body of a kidnapped child was recovered from a canal near Hilla. Two rockets fell near a U.S. base there as well.

In Mosul, a man’s body was discovered. A bomb wounded three children.

A rocket was confiscated in Tahiriya.

Christians in Tal Keef silently demonstrated for more protection.

Sabian Mandaeans in Missan province called off Eid celebrations in solidarity with Christians and Muslims who were killed this week in Baghdad.

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) took responsibility for Sunday’s bombing in Istanbul. Although they are also fighting for an autonomous Kurdish state, they are an autonomous entity separate from the better-known Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and have not joined the PKK’s unilateral truce. The TAK also operate out of northern Iraq.
