Meanwhile, the sudden exit of U.S. troops from Anbar province has become a local scandal for chiefs who feel abandoned by the absence. Also, an International Monetary Fund official said the IMF would likely approve $7 billion loan to Iraq.

Thursday: 1 US Soldier, 5 Iraqis Killed; 7 Iraqis Wounded

Updated at 7:59 p.m. EDT, Oct. 1, 2009 Iraq was mostly quiet today other than the news that Prime Minister Maliki has created a new political bloc ahead of January elections. At least five Iraqis were killed and seven more were wounded. One U.S. soldier also died in a non-combat situation Tuesday in Kut.

Wednesday: 13 Iraqis Killed, 19 Wounded

Updated at 8:15 p.m. EDT, Sept. 23, 2009 With the Eid holiday over, news reporting out of Iraq resumed today. At least 13 Iraqis were killed and 19 more were wounded in the latest violence. Meanwhile, the policeman father of an Iraqi man beaten to death by British troops testified at a public inquiry that he believes the attack was in revenge for his reporting on the theft of money by British soldiers.

Sunday: 1 US Soldier, 2 Iraqis Killed; 17 Iraqis Wounded

Updated at 8:58 p.m. EDT, Sept. 20, 2009 One American soldier was killed and 12 more where injured when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed at the Balad Air Base during bad weather. At least two Iraqis were killed and 17 more were wounded in other violence.

Friday: 8 Iraqis Killed, 28 Wounded, 11 Kidnapped

Updated at 7:40 p.m. EDT, Sept. 18, 2009 At least eight Iraqis were killed and 26 more were wounded in the latest attacks. Another 11 were kidnapped. Meanwhile, the U.S. military is training upper and lower level prison employees, hoping the Iraqis will avoid Abu Ghraib-like scandals now that the final U.S. detainees are being transferred over to the Iraqi authorities.
