Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq called for replacing his dictatorial boss during an interview today.. Separately, officials in Iraqi Kurdistan told Baghdad to consider holding Hashemi’s trial in neutral territory because they aren’t handing Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi to Maliki operatives. Meanwhile, no major attacks against Shi’ite pilgrims took place today, but least eight Iraqis were killed and nine more were wounded in new violence. Also, one Syrian militant was killed.

Interior Ministry Apologizes For Abuses, But Only Those Under Saddam

Security forces in the Interior Ministry apologized for abuses committed during the Saddam era, but apparently forgot to mention any acts since 2003. The ministry was well known to harbor death squads for years after the U.S.-led invasion, and accusations of torture continue to the present day. Separately, the ministry demanded the Kurds hand over Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, who is wanted on charges of terrorism that many believe are trumped up. At least six Iraqis were killed and 28 more were wounded in new violence.

Iraq: Shi’ite Pilgrims Targets For More Violence

At least 10 Iraqis were killed and 30 more were wounded. Some of the violence targeted Shi’ite pilgrims in and around Baghdad, but attacks farther north were heavy on security personnel. Meanwhile, the Iraqiya list could be seeing a breakthrough soon as talks with the National Coalition over the latest political impasses seem to be working.

Iraq Gov’t Show Favoritism Towards Deadly Shi’ite Militia; 10 Dead Across Iraq

A Shi’ite militia known to have staged numerous attacks against Iraqi and U.S. targets since 2004 claims it is laying down its arms and seeking political office instead. Meanwhile, at least 10 Iraqis were killed and 31 more were wounded in new attacks. Again, pilgrims were targeted, but so was a parade honoring the anniversary of the founding of Iraq’s modern army in 1921.

Iraq: 84 killed, 157 wounded in attacks

Updated at 8:00 p.m. EST, January 5, 2012 Despite serious attempts to prevent attacks against Shi’ite pilgrims traveling in Iraq, bombers were still able to reach them. The worst violence took place south of Baghdad, but the capital also saw great loss of life. Overall, at least 84 people were killed and 157 more were wounded in the attacks. Although most, if not all, were Iraqis, some of the casualties could have been foreign visitors.
