Militias Pushed Out of Tikrit Battle; 209 Killed in Iraq

Shi’ite militias have pulled back from the Tikrit operation. The army’s special forces and federal police are now leading the final push on the city instead. The drawdown was a condition for U.S. airstrikes, as was the demand for a coherent plan of attack. Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of US Central Command, said the militias were undermining the operation.

Fighting Still Stalled in Tikrit, but 114 Killed across Iraq

M.P. Shakhawan Abdullah, head of Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee, called the 30,000 Iranian forces are operating in Iraq a threat to national sovereignty. Nearly echoing the Kurdish lawmaker’s complaint, C.I.A. Director John Brennan warned that these forces are contributing to the destabilization of the country.

369 Killed in Iraq Fighting; Kurds Threaten To Leave Parliament

The head of the Kurdistan Security Council, Masrour Barzani, accused Baghdad of keeping funds meant for the Kurdish region, while still subsidizing regions under militant control and paying salaries to unofficial militias. Baghdad claims that the Kurds have not contributed their fair share as promised in an oil agreement. The dispute could encourage the Kurds to withdraw from parliament.
