Clinton Warns Iran, Iraq Arrests Ba’ath Party Members, And Attacks Continue Across Iraq

The United States and Iran exchanged words this weekend over which country will have continued influence over Iraq following the U.S. withdrawal in ten weeks. Meanwhile, at least three Iraqis were killed and 11 more were wounded in the latest violence, and hundreds of Iraqis were arrested on alleged ties to the Ba’ath Party.

Seven Iraqis Killed in Several Attacks

At least seven Iraqis were killed and six more were wounded in a series of small attacks across the country. Meanwhile, President Obama claimed that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by a Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline. That news came as Turkey said it would cooperate with Iran on eliminating the Kurdistan rebel threat.

US Closes Northern Iraq Base As Turkey Intensifies PKK Border Operations

The U.S. military moved forward with its drawdown operations by officially shutting down one of its regional headquarters today. The base oversaw areas of northern Iraq where Turkish troops continued their operations against Kurdish rebels. Meanwhile, at least four Iraqis were killed and 15 more were wounded in violence further south in Baghdad and Sadr City.

Blasts Kill 20 in Sadr City As Surge in Bombings Continues

Bombers again targeted a Shi’ite neighborhood in the capital. It is the fourth day in the last week that Baghdad has seen unusual activity. Meanwhile, the U.S. will no longer announce U.S.-to-Iraq base transfers, in order to end what they believe is related insurgent activity. Across the country attacks left 26 dead and 53 wounded.
