Kurds Approve Heavy Weapons For Themselves, Baghdad Says No

Just days after the Kurdish Regional Government called on the United States to cancel an order of fighter jets headed to Iraq, the K.R.G. approved for its own use all types of weapons. Baghdad quickly warned the Kurds that their possession of tanks and warplanes is against the Iraqi constitution. Meanwhile, new violence at least three Iraqis killed and 17 more wounded.

Sadr to Barzani: No Overthrow of Iraq Government

During talks with Kurdish President Massoud Barzani yesterday, Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr mandate insisted that there would be no support for an overthrow of the government, but he did suggest the possibility of not renewing Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s mandate as premier. At least seven Iraqis were killed and seven more were wounded today.

29 Iraqis Killed, 50 Wounded in Violence Against Civilians and Jewelers

Attacks in and around Baghdad seemed to mimic last Thursday’s coordinated attacks against security personnel. However, today’s violence targeted gold dealers and civilians instead. At least 29 Iraqis were killed and 50 more were wounded. Meanwhile, an impromptu summit in Kurdistan could signal an intensified campaign to force Maliki to comply with a power-sharing deal.

9 Killed in New Iraq Attacks

The Iraqi government announced a pay cut for the highest paid Sahwa members. The Shi’ite-led government was to have folded these former Sunni fighters into regular jobs but has, so far, failed to do so. About 40,000 are still at their posts. At least nine Iraqis were killed and 18 more were wounded in new attacks. Another seven foreign nationals were wounded in a bombing.

Kurds And Turks Uneasy About Maliki; 12 Iraqis Killed in Attacks

At a news conference yesterday, Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani revealed his opposition to the sale of F-16 jets to Iraq by the United States. Neighboring Turkey has been openly apprehensive over Maliki’s “self-centered” behavior as well, causing Maliki to call Turkey a “hostile state.” Meanwhile, at least 12 Iraqis were killed and 10 more were wounded in the latest attacks.
