The Failed Policy of Collapsism

When small children want something to go away, they close their eyes. Poof! The monster disappears. The spoonful of spinach vanishes. The spilled milk evaporates. Except that they don’t. U.S policymakers indulge in a similar variety of child’s play called collapsism. They close their eyes when they want a particularly despised adversary to go away. … Continue reading “The Failed Policy of Collapsism”

Afghan Families Want Accountability, Not Apologies

The dusty cemetery in Saracha village hosts three new graves: small hills of soil shielding the bodies of Sahebullah, Wasihullah and Amanullah, three of the five boys and young men killed by an ISAF-NATO airstrike on late Friday, Oct. 4. According to the firsts ISAF-NATO reports, the five were “enemy forces”, “insurgents”, killed with a … Continue reading “Afghan Families Want Accountability, Not Apologies”

American Apocalypse

I don’t believe in God. However, I do believe in divine retribution. Without going into the specifics of this somewhat counterintuitive theology, suffice to say here that its central axiom is the idea that actions have consequences. One cannot go on committing evil without reaping a whirlwind or two. Eventually Nemesis overtakes Hubris, and the … Continue reading “American Apocalypse”

It’s Time To Put an End to Israel’s ‘Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell’ Nuclear Policy

The negotiations this week in Geneva between Iran and the “P5+1” (the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States – plus Germany) offer a promising vehicle for avoiding another destructive war. Iraq Eid Attacks: 76 Killed, 229 Wounded

Although the Eid al-Adha holiday began rather quietly, militants unleashed a torrent of violence today that left 76 people dead and 229 more wounded. The capital suffered several bombings, but so did towns in the ethnically diverse north. Also, fugitive vice president Tareq al-Hashemi offered to return to Iraq if the European Union will help guarantee him a fair trail.

Israel and the Gulf Increasingly Nervous Over Iran-US Détente

As hopeful, albeit vague, statements about talks in Geneva between Iran and the great powers continued to issue from the Swiss city Tuesday, foes of détente between Washington and Tehran maintained their own high tempo of work. The government of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and its supporters in the powerful Israel lobby, which exerts … Continue reading “Israel and the Gulf Increasingly Nervous Over Iran-US Détente”

Fixing Congress Means Fixing the Government

I am sure that many readers of antiwar have seen the Internet message that is making the rounds about congress. It is attributed to Warren Buffett and provides a solution to the problem with the nation’s legislature. Per Buffett, make every congressman accountable for his actions vis-à-vis driving up the national debt: “You just pass … Continue reading “Fixing Congress Means Fixing the Government”

End the Tragic Waste in Afghanistan

Over the last week, I have had the opportunity to read two articles – "The Forgotten War" by Ann Jones and "Afghanistan War Must End Immediately" by Iraq veteran Jayel Aheram – that accurately describe the tragic waste of American lives and money in Afghanistan. Also this week, I had the opportunity to meet with … Continue reading “End the Tragic Waste in Afghanistan”
