Gunning for Islam
The Islamophobes: fringe wackos, or rising mass movement?
Three people are dead because US "pastor" Terry Jones, in collaboration with the American media, staged (or threatened to stage) an anti-Muslim Koran-burning exhibition, which predictably stoked anti-American protests in Afghanistan: also predictably, US troops fired on demonstrators. The result: yet more "collateral damage."
In more 9/11 anniversary news: a rally sponsored by the David Horowitz-affiliated "Jihad Watch," in alliance with Pamela "Shrieking Harpy" Geller’s "Stop the Islamization of America" grouplet and the British neo-fascist "English Defense League," attracted a few thousand wackos to a site a few blocks from Ground Zero, where uber-wacko Geert Wilders (Dutch neo-fascist and leading Islamophobe) made the case for banning Islam in the name of … "Dutch tolerance":
"America, New York and Shariah are incompatible in New York. New York stands for openness and tolerance. Suppose there was a place and it only allowed people of one persuasion within its walls. It would not be New York. It would be Mecca."
Maybe Wilders has been smoking too much of that strong Dutch weed, but to argue that we’re too tolerant to tolerate the intolerant seems a bit odd. Then again, Dutch neo-fascism no doubt suffers in translation.
Wilders, Geller, and "Jihad Watch" anti-Islam guru Robert Spencer want to import Europe’s Muslim-hating racist fringe to America: their thesis is that Islam is not a religion, but a political conspiracy to impose Sharia law on non-Muslims. They raise the specter of an Islamic States of America, with American women draped in the chador and mandatory mosque attendance – a scenario that doesn’t even qualify as credible science fiction.
And if you think it doesn’t get any kookier than that, then you didn’t listen to John Bolton’s speech to the anti-mosque rally, delivered via videotape, wherein he attacked the effort by "politicians" to "impose tolerance and understanding on us, whether we like it or not." He also indirectly attacked his own former boss, George W. Bush, when he lashed out against Imam Feisal Rauf’s role as a State Department emissary of good will to Muslim nations. It was Bush’s State Department who first sponsored him in that role. Shortly before delivering his remarks, Bolton confirmed he is considering a presidential run: can he ride the wave of hate all the way to the White House?
Another aspiring anti-Muslim Know-Nothing demagogue who spoke at the rally is one Ilario Pantano, whose credentials as a murderous hater are surely impeccable. We last heard about Pantano when Army prosecutors accused him of murdering two Iraqis in some very cold blood, as Mother Jones relates:
"The central facts of the incident that made Ilario Pantano famous are not in dispute. On April 15, 2004, Pantano, a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, led a small group of Marines to search a suspected insurgent hideout in Mahmudiyah, Iraq, outside of Fallujah. As the patrol neared the house, two men tried to leave in a car. The Marines stopped, searched, and handcuffed the men. A Marine scoured the vehicle, but didn’t find anything incriminating. After other Marines found weapons in the house, Pantano had the men uncuffed and ordered them to search the car themselves. At some point during that search, Pantano felt threatened by the two men. He shot them both—pausing to load a second magazine into his M-16 before emptying that clip too. Then he placed a cardboard sign reading ‘No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy’—the motto of his Marine battalion—on top of the car. He wanted ‘to send a message to these Iraqis and others,’ he said later.
"For a time in 2005, it looked like Pantano might be court-martialed for killing the two Iraqis. One of his subordinates claimed the shooting was unjustified. But the prosecution’s case collapsed in an early hearing, and Pantano was never even tried. The judge in charge of the hearing recommended non-judicial punishment—but Pantano’s commander didn’t agree, and he was never disciplined."
This is the kind of person at the head of the "anti-Islamization" movement – an escaped war criminal.
Pantano is now running for Congress in North Carolina — as a Republican, naturally.
Joe Conason made an important point about this hate movement, and that is its intensely partisan nature. Go here to listen to hate-monger Geller, aka Pamela Oshry, at a pro-Israel rally earlier this year. She ends her ultra-Likudist diatribe – "There is no Israeli occupation: the Arabs are occupying Israel!" – by urging her audience to "Dump Chuck!" Chuck Schumer, that is, the Democratic US Senator from New York who "dared" oppose John Bolton’s nomination for UN ambassador: after all, "reasons" Geller, Bolton is "the best friend Israel ever had!" What else do we need to know?
If you think this gathering of pro-Israel fanatics, British football hooligans, and a Dutch neo-fascist is just a fringe phenomenon, ask yourself how many Americans believe Obama is a "secret Muslim"? The answer is depressing: and Republicans like Newt Gingrich are already using the anti-Muslim hysteria to target the President and his party in a display of shameless opportunism that is a new low, even for the GOP.
Part of this is due to internal Republican party politics: with the economics-driven "tea party" faction rapidly overturning the GOP Establishment, the neoconservative remnants are trying to stage a comeback by diverting the movement’s energy to anti-Muslim scapegoating — anything other than holding Republicans as well as Democrats accountable for spending us into penury.
The impetus for this comes, as I detailed in last Friday’s column, from the pro-Israel lobby, which is moving into high gear with its bomb Iran campaign, with Bolton calling on both the US and Israel to launch an immediate military strike. Millions of dollars are being poured into this effort, with Spencer’s "Jihad Watch" and various and sundry other pro-Israel groups on the receiving end of the moolah. Like many right-wing movements, the anti-Islam activists have founded a new industry, marketing books, videos, and t-shirts, and throwing up "celebrities," e.g. the exhibitionistic bikini-wearing Geller, whose nude body painted gold adorns her blog’s masthead. Follow the money!
As nutty and improbable as the idea of an "Islamic States of America" might be, there is real potential for a mass anti-Muslim movement in this country. All we need is another terrorist attack, not even one on the scale of 9/11, and the smoldering fires of unfocused anger that burn just beneath the surface of polite society will burst through to the surface. Ask any Japanese-American.
Languishing for the lack of a proper enemy in the post-cold war world, the neoconservative right was saved from extinction by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The specter of militant Islam is, for them, the perfect villain, one who represents a threat not just to the US but also to Israel, a country which is to them as the old Soviet Union was to American Communists: a model and a fatherland. Their strategy is to replicate in the US the anti-Muslim xenophobia that swept Likud into power in Israel, and which has catapulted Avigdor Lieberman, head of an anti-Muslim ultra-nationalist party, into the Foreign Ministry. Bolton is our Lieberman, and hopes to take the same route to power.
"I don’t think anybody has a problem with Muslims in America," opines Reason.com editor Nick Gillespie on PBS. Is that why the anti-mosque campaign has gone national, and with some success? Is that why "mainstream" Republican politicians like Newt Gingrich and Speaker John Boehner are weighing in against the Park51 community center? Is it because there’s never been a mass political movement in America targeting a vulnerable religious minority?
I’d like to believe these people won’t get far: after all, how many Americans feel threatened by the possible imposition of Sharia law? On the other hand, it takes very little to drive people over the edge, especially in these troubled times.
The only way to defeat these bastards is to counter-attack immediately, and mercilessly: don’t let them get away with it for one moment. The very idea of forbidding the building of a mosque, or any religious edifice, is anti-American to the core, and must be fought tooth and nail. What could be a clearer confirmation of the libertarian contention that a foreign policy of global intervention necessarily means the rollback of our civil liberties here at home? For libertarians, there is no question but that Muslims must be defended against the gathering lynch mob.
How to do this is another question, but that’s a subject for a future column. Suffice to say here that the defense of the Muslim minority in the US is the acid test for all those who claim to believe in "freedom" and "liberty."
NOTES IN THE MARGIN
Rallies, demonstrations, "Collateral Murder" film screenings, whistle-blowing parties and forums will be held around the world between the 16th and 19th of this month as vital expressions of international solidarity with Bradley Manning. To find out how you can show your support for the brave young man who dared expose US war crimes, go here.
I’m taking my show on the road this autumn, to campuses around the country, talking about some of the ideas expressed in last Wednesday’s column on "Anti-Interventionism: The Left-wing Tradition." My talk is entitled "Why Has the Left Sold Out the Antiwar Movement?" – which is sure to provoke a controversy, or at least that’s the hope.
If you’re interested in booking me at your campus, write wendy@antiwar.com, or call the Antiwar.com office, at: 510-217-8665.

Cui bono, really: who benefits. Who gets more F-16s the more the US is scared witless about Muslims?
What if it's all an intelligence operation? What if it's all coordinated?
All it took was a tiny handful of people on the payroll whipping up a frenzy over that ridiculous mosque- if the whole mosque plan was not part of the plan in the first place.
This could be one of history's truly great black ops.

The fight back should obviously be in defence of the values that the USA claims to aspire to: tolerance of the opinions and beliefs of others, and the pursuit of justice for all. Here in Britain we see the same 'scaring White People' tactic every time an advocacy group from within the Muslim community go public with a controversial proposal. Each time fifteen or so people out of a community numbering hundreds of thousands go out and hold a few signs saying 'Shariah For UK”, it seems to be deemed vital by those who set the narrative that the story make our front pages. For those of us used to going out to protest war in our tens of thousands only to find that our protest 'never happened', the irony could not be greater. There is a sense of perspective sadly missing in all of this, and it has its own dire consequences. The issue of Shariah law itself provides an interesting example of our own duplicity. In East London we have a large Jewish community, many of whom prefer to settle their disputes through their own tribunals, known as Beth Din, rather than through the country's own courts of law. This does not, and should not create any alarm within the wider community, so why the different set of values for Islam? Could it have anything to do with the necessity of dehumanising a people that you are in fact at war with?

This is none of our business and god will punish for their deeds in this world and there after. This is the real face of america. They are challenging God for by allegations on 9/11, then killing Muslims around the world and now relious hatred by burning Koran.
If a nation is deep in corruption and morally at the end of tunnel they do such rubish things. I am sure Islam has survived and nothing will happen to Muslims.
We can,t deform Christ or burn even false Bibel and we have to show patience.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite quotes, from Justice William O. Douglas :
"As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such a twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air – however slight – least we become victims of the darkness"

Great article. However must to be marked more the role of Jewish propaganda in this campaign. It is not the likudniks how some people ,even Raimondo, calls the participants in the antiIslam propaganda, is Israel and the most of Jewish propagandists. How Tzipi Livni explained the importance of Israel as a defender of Occident against the Islam (i.m not sure that she used "radical Islam"until Bernard Levy,Alain Finkelkraut who defend the French culture in endangered by the presence of Arabs immigrants ,until David Brooks who persisted to say that America is in war with Islam even when Mr.Obama declared that it is not and until a journalist from Haaretz ,Melman, who explained that the connection between Israel and Singapore is due because both are surrounded by Muslim countries and so have similar problems.
And read the Robert Fisk article in Antiwar today. He describes the permanent war on terror as a permanent craziness which catches the both sides,it is not an attacker and an attacked. He gives some names:of course is the "half demented Ahmadinejad and Gaddafi".In a previous article he called Ahmadinejad pure and simple "demented".Such he wants to stop the craziness.

Are we supposed to constrict 1st amendment rights because Muslims in Afghanistan don't know how to control themselves? Blasphemy is protected speech – always has been in the secular West. Are you suggesting that only polite speech that doesn't offend Muslims should be allowed?
I'm a member of a culture that witnessed the genocide of millions of Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks between the years 1895 and 1922. The assertion that there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim and that they are commanded by the Koran to exert supremacy over all non-Muslims isn't a scare tactic. Their ideology demands that all non-Muslims must be willing to accept dhimmitude or they will make our lives a living hell until we do. Their goal of supremacy required two methods – violent threats and constant irritation and obstruction of the non-Muslims' progress in our own society. This isn't exclusive to America or Israel or the past two centuries. Their threats towards anyone who insults Islam and the constant irritation and disruption of the non-Muslim society to impose their supremacy over us have been a signature of their belief system for the past 1,400 years.
Once upon a time – all of Anatolia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria were Christian. Only the tiniest majority converted by choice. Examples of Christian brutality are often cited by Western liberals but the historical record proves that Islam has killed exponentially more human beings, ruined more civilizations and plunged more regions into a living hell for minorities, women and foreign workers than all the other major religions put together. What many people in the West don't know is that the Spanish Inquisition was a walk in the park compared to what the Moors did to European Christians and was in fact an pale imitation of the Moorish campaign of forced conversions that continued for centuries and which nobody in the West appears to know anything about. What Muslims categorize as persecution was the Christians finally fighting back in self-defense. I doubt if you could stomach reading what they did to those they forcibly converted but they were the ones who set the example for the Spanish Church which copied their methods for the Inquisition. If you want a more current example of what Muslims do to non-Muslims who express an opinion that is contrary to theirs – even when politely expressed, you may consider taking the time to google "Hrant Dink."
Someone once wrote "there is a limit at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue." The notion that we must perpetually accept stubborn selfishness as that exhibited by the mosque developers while at the same time also having to accept that we're not allowed to wear a cross or build a church in Islamicized countries under pain of death and must also concede our right to blaspheme a religion we find to be historically anathema to human progress is no longer palatable. Would you recommend to an abused wife that she should be tolerant of her husband's brutality s so that she can prove she's a better person than he is?
Honor killings are already becoming an epidemic across America. Sharia courts operate under the strict guideline that a woman's word is worth half of a man's word. I don't remember the last time a Christian or Jewish woman was stoned for adultery. The rate of rape in Muslim countries is stratospherically higher than in the West- it just doesn't get reported because the penalty for a rape victim reporting the crime is death. And since 50-year-old men regularly arrange marriage with 15-year-old second and third wives, it's not really rape – is it? Our leaders have turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the truth about Islam because they're receiving large campaign contributions from domestic Muslim groups as well as foreign Muslim governments to do so.
The next time you meet an attractive, hip-looking, educated young Muslim who purrs that he/she loves America and only wants to live in peace and equality with Christians, Jews, and atheists – try to get a straight answer as to whether or not the Koran verses commanding that non-Muslims must submit to dhimmitude constitute a false doctrine.
Racism and religious bigotry require believing something that isn't true. They're prejudices that people believe because they're afraid of people who are different or because they believe that only their own beliefs have legitimacy. I'm a member of a non-Muslim group that has had intimate knowledge of Arab, Turkish, and Iranian Islam for centuries. Islam isn't analogous to Christianity or Judaism. The most accurate analogy is Nazism. Just replace the word "Fuhrer" with the word "Allah."

Israel is NOT part of the occident. Never has been. Never will be.
The belief in being "divinely chosen" (or even historically chosen, for that matter) or, put another way, one's inherent superiority to all others, is an idea more anti-Western than any other.

Good post. I'm afraid that the values that the US, as you correctly state, 'claims to aspire to' have been much more self congratulatory rhetoric than real. The American right has fought racial integration, workers' rights, religious freedom, sexual freedom, reproductive freedom, etc throughout US history. 'Tolerance' is obviously despised by many on the right still today – of course that's what makes them right wingers to begin with.
Justin – you got to get past your John Birch paranoid obsession with communism. Its not really a variable worthy of commenting on in every article.

"its nowhere near Ground Zero"
You're right, it's not NEAR Ground Zero. Since a piece of the landing gear struck that very building, it's actually a PART of Ground Zero.
I read that it was never searched for human remains, but I wonder if any bits and pieces of the passengers wound up on that spot. Imagine you're one of the grieving relatives (non-Muslim) who will be making frequent visits to Ground Zero. That's a lot of in-your-face triumphalism for ordinary folk to swallow.
And it gets worse. It's now being reported that Rauf has been associating with a rabid 9/11 truther who will be featured at Cordoba. Talk about insult to injury. I suppose it's the sheer callousness of this gang which inspires the likes of Raimondo to pledge his allegiance to them.

Sorry Mr. Raimondo but you are dead wrong. Look up the FBI statistics on hate crimes in America. In 2009 there were far more hate crimes against blacks and Jews than against Muslims. Muslims are not "in danger" in America.
Yes they do have a right to build a mosque near Ground Zero. And the Western press has a right to publish those Mohammed cartoons. And Terry Jones has a right to burn the Koran. I don't see you defending the 1st Amendment rights of the artists who made those cartoons or of Mr. Jones.
You are defending a religion under which you would be put to death for the "crime" of being a homosexual. And you know that "moderate" Muslims would stand idly by and not say a word in protest as you are being hanged or stoned to death. Get a clue.
A "libertarian-for-Islam" is an oxymoron.

You forgot to add "because Muslims are only 1% of the U.S. population". Ask the British, the French, or the Dutch if this scenario is "fiction" in their countries. Ask anyone from any country with a large, and growing, Muslim minority.

Armstrong Williams wrote:
Islam emerged from what is modern day Saudi Arabia in the 7th century, and never looked back. Muslim armies swept across North Africa and invaded Catholic Spain, destroying or converting the Christian communities along the way. They turned churches into mosques, and made Islam the official religion. Muslim armies also took over the Holy Land, destroyed the last non-Islamic Persian empire, and moved into Asia Minor (modern day Turkey). By the 16th century, Islam had destroyed the Christian Byzantine Empire, had taken over Constantinople, and had turned the Hagia Sophia — the most beautiful church in Christendom — into a mosque. A century later, Muslim armies were outside the gates of Vienna.
While the years have passed and the names of the armies and countries have changed, Islam's war against the rest of us continues at full speed. There isn't a day that goes by without a new terrorist attack carried out by a Muslim militant. Women are stoned in Afghanistan because they had the nerve to be raped… Children are beaten to death and strung up in Pakistan, because they were suspected of theft… Non-Muslims living in Muslim countries are in constant fear of kidnapping and murder… It's even happening here. In Buffalo, New York, a Muslim-American television executive who attempted to use his station to improve U.S public opinion about Muslims later beheaded his wife after she filed for divorce. Of the roughly 25 wars currently ongoing, 21 involve Muslim countries. Put differently, Islam is connected to 80% of the planet's armed conflicts, while making up only 20% of its population. There's a reason for that.
In Islam the world exists in two Houses. The House of Peace, where Islam is the recognized religion, and the House of War, where Islam is fighting to become the recognized religion, and because Islam teaches that Allah may change his mind at any time, for Muslims, there is no stable and universal moral code. When you eliminate reason as a guide in human thinking, force is the only thing that determines truth. For that reason, in the House of War, anything goes.

Minds can change. Americans have such good hearts and want so much to afford equality to everyone that criticizing any ideology that's promoted as a religion is seen as an affront to the First Amendment and our American tradition. Americans whose heritage is founded in Western Europe haven't been exposed long enough to Islam to understand what they're up against. The only moderate Muslims are the lapsed ones – the ones who no longer attend Mosque prayers. The ones who attend prayers and pretend to be Americanized are practicing a highly oblique form of taqiya. They're taught techniques of deception from the time they're old enough to understand language. My experience is different because as soon as they know my background, they drop the deception – understanding that it's a waste of time to pretend with me. With Christians who are not from the Middle East, their campaign of deception is highly refined and very convincing but the fact that they can say to 70% of of their fellow Americans that they don't give a damn how we feel has exposed their true beliefs to a certain extent. For all their knowledge of the American system, they still don't understand that there's more to being an American then just following the letter of the law.

You and I may be tilting at windmills but there was one incident that has been haunting me for a while. In Pakistan, an eight-year-old blind child was hanged by her middle-aged male teacher because she wasn't memorizing the verses of the Koran fast enough and he wanted to set an example for the other students. The penalty for killing women and girls throughout the Muslim world is usually 6 months. Regardless of whatever violence may be committed in the West, the government doesn't let child murderers off with a 6-month jail sentence.
