Islamic State of Iraq Takes Credit For Bloodshed

The Islamic State of Iraq claimed responsibility for yesterday’s coordinated attacks across Iraq. The group, which is linked to al-Qaeda, called it revenge for a “torture and liquidation campaign that Sunni women and men are being subjected to in Baghdad’s prisons and other areas.” Meanwhile, violence was much lighter today, but least three Iraqis were killed and 11 more were wounded.

Iraq Slaughter: 97 Killed, 348 Wounded

Just a day after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned of efforts to stoke sectarian strife, coordinated attacks against mostly Shi’ite targets took place across the country. At least 97 Iraqis were killed in the attacks, and another 348 were wounded.

Iraq PM Warns of Vague Sectarian Threat

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki today met with tribal leaders in the former “triangle of death,” just south of Baghdad, where he gave them a vague warning of a “plot to ignite sectarian strife.” Maliki also said that the government needs civilian help in the reconstruction of Iraq and maintaining security. The sheikhs promised to stand with the government in reaching the goal of a safe Iraq. Unsurprisingly, the premier neglected to mention his own role in stoking tensions.

40 Killed Across Iraq, Police Recruits Targeted

A large blast rocked Baghdad today, killing 20 police recruits and policemen. The attack, which occurred near the heavily fortified Interior Ministry, may have been a message to the Maliki government. However, it wasn’t the only violence targeting policemen. At least 40 Iraqis were killed and 42 more were wounded overall. Many of those victims were either security personal or their informants.

Iraq Attacks Focus on Policemen’s Homes

Violence targeted police and other security personnel today. Several of the attacks were on the homes of policemen, and they left civilian relatives dead or wounded in their wake. At least seven Iraqis were killed and 13 more were wounded overall.
