Azerbaijan lost its first servicemember to the Iraqi war. Meanwhile, 41 Iraqis were killed and two more were injured. A mass grave was the only significant violence on a quiet day marked mostly by detentions.
An Azeri soldier died near Haditha. The cause of death was not disclosed. About 150 troops from the former Soviet republic are stationed in Iraq. He was the first from Azerbaijan to have died in the conflict.
Iraqi police raided a suspected al-Qaeda safe-house in Samarra. There they found the bodies of seven torture victims, including one belonging to a woman.
U.S. forces killed three suspects and captured a dozen others in northern Iraq.
Two senior al-Qaeda suspects were arrested in al-Talib.
A Sadrist office manager was detained in Amara.
Dozens of residents in Dhi Qar protested being passed over for employment in the police force.
A journalist and his son were released from U.S. detention in Tikrit after an investigation.
Five suspects were captured in Hawija.
The police chief in al-Dor was detained.
Twelve suspects were arrested in Basra.
In Hilla, a bomb targeting a National Reform Office was safely defused. The party was formed by former PM Ibrahim Al-Jaafari.
Also, a person killed in an already-reported U.S. raid in Karbala yesterday happend to be a relative of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
