At least 103 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 91 more were wounded in the latest violence. A number of the dead were suspected militants who were killed in security operations in Baghdad and Diyala provinces. Also, a Task Force Lightning soldier died from injuries received in Diyala province during an explosion near his vehicle, and a British soldier was killed during indirect fire in Basra.
In Baghdad, 17 dumped bodies were found scattered about town. Five were killed and 12 wounded when a bomb on a minibus in Baladiyat was detonated. A mortar attack left two dead and five wounded in an eastern neighborhood. In the south, a police captain was killed yesterday. One civilian was killed and three were wounded when gunmen open fired on them in a southern neighborhood. Nearby, a roadside bomb wounded four civilians when it blasted an ambulance. Mortars fired upon Shi’ite neighborhoods killed four and wounded 14 more. Also, U.S. and Iraqi troops raided a mosque where they detained 18 suspects.
Three Baghdad residents were also killed and about 50 more were wounded during the celebratory gunfire that followed the Iraqi national soccer team’s quaterfinal win over Vietnam in the Asian Cup. These casualties were not added to the tally.
During a U.S. helicopter strike near Husseiniyah, six gunmen were killed and five were wounded. However, Iraqi police and witnesses reported that the airstrike instead killed 18 civilians and wounded 21 more.
A roadside bomb wounded two policemen in Kirkuk.
The Iraqi army killed five suspects and detained 46 others during a security operation near the Iranian border in Diyala province. During a mission near al-Tahrir, 13 gunmen were killed and 16 arrested.
Iraqi police killed four gunmen during a car chase in western Anbar province.
In Diwaniya, the body of a policeman who had been kidnapped was recovered.
A booby-trapped body in al-Rashad killed two policemen and wounded two others.
In Najaf, a senior official at Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s office was found assassinated in his office.
A body was found in al-Qarya al-Asriya.
In Mosul, 11 dumped bodies were found. Gunmen killed a policeman at a cafe where the Asian Cup finals were being shown. Also, six policemen were killed and two wounded during a roadside bomb explosion.
In al-Sumoud, gunmen attacked the village and kidnapped citizens. Iraqi security forces responded by killing four of the attackers and arresting one. Four families were freed.
Mortars falling in Buhriz injured eight people, including two children.
