At least 122 Iraqis were killed and 70 were wounded during attacks which including a car bombing near a shrine in Baghdad. Six more GIs were killed in action, bringing the tally of U.S servicemembers who have died serving in Iraq to 3503 deaths.
The DOD reported that two U.S. airmen were killed during an IED attack in Kirkuk yesterday, while an American soldier was killed during enemy gunfire yesterday in Diyala province. In today’s attacks, an explosion in Diyala province killed a Task Force Lightning soldier and wounded a second one. A 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Soldier was killed by an IED near Baiji. Also, an MND-B soldier was killed and another wounded during an IED attack in Baghdad.
In significant news, the Islamic State in Iraq reported that they have reached a ceasefire with al-Qaeda. Recently, the two groups had clashed for several days in a Baghdad neighborhood. Also, Turkey’s military could not confirm a report that several thousand troops crossed the border into Iraq to confront Kurdish militants. A Kurdish official said that the Turks carried out a limited operation including some shelling.
In Baghdad, 34 dumped bodies were found today. Seven people were killed and 27 wounded when two coordinated car bombs exploded in Khadimiya. In the Mansour district, a bomb at a market killed two and wounded eight others. Four people were injured during a roadside bombing that targeted a U.S. patrol in Iskan. Two people were injured during a bombing in Za’afraniyah. A motorcycle bomb exploded in Bab al-Muadham, but no casualties were reported. Gunmen stormed a home, killing two brothers within it.Five Christians, one a Catholic priest, have been kidnapped in Baghdad. Also, a senior ministry official was kidnapped by men wearing police commando uniforms.
Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s aide was killed outside the aide’s Najaf home yesterday. Al-Sistani is the spiritual leader of Iraq’s Shi’ite majority.
A police officer was killed in a drive-by shooting in Baiji.
Four civilians were wounded during a shootout between U.S. forces and gunmen in Tikrit.
Gunmen killed a police officer and wounded another in Mosul.
A roadside bomb injured four Iraqi soldiers near Sufra village.
In Khalis, 16 were killed and eight injured during clashes. Yesterday, local residents attacked a fake checkpoint and freed 13 hostages. Two policemen and two Iraqi soldiers were killed north of town yesterday.
After a four-hour battle south of Baquba in Abdul Kareem village, the Diyala salvation council reported that they had freed the town of "terrorists". Fifteen gunmen were killed in the battle.
In what may be a separate incident, eight gunmen were killed during a clash that involved U.S. and Iraqi troops in Baquba.
Iraqi security forces discovered roadside bombs underneath the Dhuluiya bridge.
A total of nine barbers have been killed in Basra over the last two days in three separate events.
The body of an oil worker was found in al-Latif.
In Kirkuk, a roadside bomb killed two police officers and wounded three others.
Yesterday in Ramadi, eight policemen were killed and four wounded during an attack on a checkpoint that U.S. forces say did not happen.
Four bodies were found in Mosul yesterday.
