US Nuclear Option on Iran Linked to Israeli Attack Threat
The Barack Obama administration’s declaration in its Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) that it is reserving the right to use nuclear weapons against Iran represents a new element in a strategy of persuading Tehran that an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites is a serious possibility if Iran does not bow to the demand that it cease uranium enrichment.
Although administration officials have carefully refrained from drawing any direct connection between the new nuclear option and the Israeli threat, the NPR broadens the range of contingencies in which nuclear weapons might play a role so as to include an Iranian military response to an Israeli attack.
A war involving Iran that begins with an Israeli attack is the only plausible scenario that would fit the category of contingencies in the document.
The NPR describes the role of U.S. nuclear weapons in those contingencies as a "deterrent." A strategy of exploiting the Israeli threat to attack Iran would seek to deter an Iranian response to such an attack and thus make it more plausible.
The new nuclear option on Iran has emerged after a series of public statements over the past year by senior officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, suggesting the administration would tolerate an Israeli option.
Both the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations had said the United States "reserves the right" to respond with nuclear weapons to the use of chemical and biological weapons in an attack on U.S. forces or its "friends" or "allies."
A contingency plan called CONPLAN 8022-02, adopted in November 2003, aimed at destroying an adversary’s nuclear weapons or nuclear facilities, included the option of using earth-penetrating nuclear weapons to destroy deeply buried facilities.
But the new NPR refers to "a narrow range of contingencies in which U.S. nuclear weapons may still play a role in deterring a conventional or CBW attack against the U.S. or its allies or partners."
That language appears to suggest that the nuclear option would deter an Iranian conventional retaliation against Israel or U.S. military targets in the region in the event of an Israeli air attack on Iran.
Both Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates made statements implicitly linking the new nuclear declaration to the broader problem of trying to force Iran to bow international demands on the nuclear issue.
Interviewed by CBS News April 1, Obama was asked what made him think sanctions would work this time. After referring to Iran’s isolation, which he said would eventually "have an effect on their economy," Obama made an obvious allusion to military options. "Now, you know, I have said before that we don’t take any options off the table," said Obama, "and we’re gonna continue to ratchet up the pressure and examine how they respond."
In the past, references to options being on or off the table had been used to refer to the option of a conventional U.S. air attack. In this case, however, Obama was clearly referring to the announcement of the nuclear option in the NPR that he knew was coming on April 6 as a way to "ratchet up the pressure" on Iran.
Asked in an interview with the New York Times April 5 whether he believed Israel would decide to attack Iran if it "stays on the current course," Obama refused to "speculate on Israeli decision-making."
But he said, "[W]e want to send a very strong message both through sanctions, through the articulation of the Nuclear Posture Review, through the nuclear summit that I’m going to be hosting, and through the NPT review conference that’s going to be coming up, that the international community is serious about Iran facing consequences if it doesn’t change its behavior."
Gates was even more pointed in highlighting what he called the "message for Iran" in his April 6 news briefing on the NPR, saying that "all options are on the table in terms of how we deal with you."
It was not the intention of the original drafters of the NPR within the State Department to issue a new threat to Iran, according to a source who was briefed on the NPR earlier this month. But the official involved in the drafting acknowledged that Gates and Obama had seized on the language to suggest that the United States now had a stronger hand in dealing with Iran, according to the source.
The White House Coordinator for WMD, Counter-Terrorism, and Arms Control is Gary Samore, who had had publicly discussed the need to exploit Iranian fear of an Israeli attack to gain diplomatic leverage over Tehran before joining the Obama administration.
At a forum at Harvard’s Kennedy Institute in September 2008, Samore had said that the next administration would not want to "act in a way that precludes" an Israeli attack on Iran, "because we’re using the threat as a political instrument."
Samore was asked during the question and answer session after a speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington Wednesday whether he expected Iran to believe that the United States would use nuclear weapons against Iran if it retaliated with conventional weapons against an Israeli attack on Iran. Samore ignored the question in answering.
As part of an apparent effort to make Iran uncertain about an Israeli attack, a series of public statements by U.S. senior officials over the past year have suggested that the would do nothing to prevent such an Israeli attack. However, the Obama administration has conveyed to the Israeli government privately that it strongly opposes any Israeli attack on Iran, according to reports in the Israeli press.
A former senior U.S. intelligence officer on Iran believes the nuclear option is likely to cause Iran to go farther in the direction of nuclear weapons rather than to give in. In an e-mail to IPS, Paul Pillar, who was the national intelligence officer for Near East and South Asia from 2000 to 2005, said Iranian officials probably see the new nuclear option as "another manifestation of U.S. hostility toward Iran."
The perception of a U.S. threat to Iran "provides one of the principal incentives for Iranians to develop their own nuclear weapons," said Pillar.
Pillar said Iranians "may also see the doctrine as providing cover for an Israeli strike by serving as a deterrent against Iranian retaliation for such a strike."
Other political-military analysts cast doubt on the credibility of the announced nuclear option against Iran.
Morton Halperin, who was director of Policy Planning in the State Department in the Clinton administration, told IPS, "I don’t think it’s credible at all. I don’t think the administration thinks it’s credible. But I think as a political matter, to have taken it off the table would have been politically untenable."
Jim Walsh of the MIT Security Studies Program, who has had many contacts with Iranian leaders and national security officials in recent years, told IPS the United States "is not going to use nuclear weapons against Iran" and that it is "foolish" to suggest that "all options are on the table."

Is this showdown thinking going to prevail, despite the current unequal balance of power and terror in the ME?? One of the players has a lot of guns, but not only too little land, it has to FEW People.. So they kill a million or two Iranians..O.K… [I think these nuclear threats are beyond the pale and criminal] In the next round suppose the Iranians were to kill a few million Jews… how would that work out for Israel..?? Israel is operating on an assumption that no rational player would countenance, that she will always kill and be able to kill 100 or 1000 Arabs & Muslims to Every Jew killed…. But these assumptions break down when examined in the context of normal progress.. As parties advance their capabilities, in all things… they draw closer together..more equal.. Look at dynamite. Iran will get capability to build bombs, the only question is when. So too will Turkey, Iraq, Egypt, [very close now!] Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and some of the emirates like Quitar. The more any one of them are threatened, the more DESPERATE all of them will become to get some, ANY, deterrence to the rogue nuclear threats and their instigators. If Israel WERE to attack Iran, she sets the stage to be attacked by any one or all these future players using the same pre-emption rational that Israel, or even the U.S. used to attack Iran.. The whole venture is a danger to Israel MORE than Iran, because of her continuous war posture, and her diminutive land and population base.. If she were to lose half her land and population, she is done, For the U.S.,Russia, China or even Canada, It would be a wake-up call. Israel made a big mistake going nuclear…. They thought it would solve all their problems, and it may… but not in the way they would have wanted…

Isarel might try its best to present itself as a victim of the events of historial racism/pogram/inquisition/holocaust nad antisemitism but the World would judge Israel for what it has done over the years to Palestine,Lebanese,Syrians,Iraqis and now Iranians . Any Isareli attempts to occupy a safe ground by allusion to those historial events will not be of much help.

There is certainly an element of truth to your statement about Democrats if I'm reading you correctly. With Republicans you sorta know what you've got whether you like them or not, but the Dems, they have a way of being perceived as something else from what they are. I need to do more research on how they manage this slight of hand before I post more, but it is something that I first noticed about 25 years ago so it's been around for a while.

IF the American Congress was not filled with Zionist TRAITORS to the U.S. whose only loyalty is to Israel – then America would cut all financial and military support to the rogue state of Israel – and perhaps Israel would becoime a responsible law abiding state? – never going to happen!

Can it be that finally a representative of the alternapundit universe is beginning to get a clue that Obama's Brand New World of Nuclear Disarmament has a very, very dark and brutal side to it, that amounts to the EXACT OPPOSITE?! We are seeing a normalization of the possibility of nuclear war that we have NEVER seen before. Yes, Reagan tried to normalize nuclear war as an option, but that idea got shut down right away. Bush gave the normalization of nuclear war a longing glance, but he too was shouted down. So what happens when Obama pretty much openly threatens nuclear war in as a tool of policy? He gets praised for maybe not doing enough to disarm, but for certainly making important steps!!!!!!!
This is an example of what many of us have tried to explain, over and over again, and been ignored or shouted down ourselves for daring to point it out: when a Democrat is president, all meaningful resistance to his or her policies, however bad or even evil they may be, ceases. There is literally nothing a Democrat cannot get away with, if he plays his cards carefully.
I'm not surprised that Porter would be one of the first to begin to wake up from the Disarmament Trance. But even Gareth continues to suggest that, not to worry, it's all just 'diplomacy', you know, a bit of the old hardball….
People, threats are NOT diplomacy. They are immoral, illegal and just plain wrong. Nuclear threats are … well, for God's sake, what the hell can you say about nuclear threats? "Monstrous" just begins to describe them. IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THIS IS A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT. WHAT HE IS DOING IS AS WRONG AS WRONG CAN BE. Calling it "realism", as folks are so fond of doing, as if that made everything ok, doesn't make it better.
And as if the threats weren't bad enough and shouldn't by themselves have us all up in rage and anger against our wicked government, we are now right on the edge of war. Telling ourselves over and over that it's all just bravado will not make the darkness go away. We need to make a little light if we want to do thaat.

The US and North Korea are still formally at war.
The North Koreans have offered to negotiate a peace but the US refuses.
North Korea and Communist China fought the US and the UN to a draw in that "police action", a draw that was actually a victory for them, since they were against the most technologically advanced military in the world.
Here's another news flash–using atomic weapons in Korea would not have won the war for the US and the UN.
Nuclear weapons are mostly useless–mainly a method of psychological and economic warfare.
The Soviets could have developed nuclear weapons before the US but Stalin refused to fund the program because he saw that it would entail a vast commitment of resources to a weapon that would not be decisive in defeating Germany.
So one or two cities are obliterated? So what? The Allies did that anyway at Dresden.
The US specifically dropped atomic weapons on Japan not to force the Japanese to surrender but to intimidate Stalin (and also as practice using nuclear weapons and as a propaganda ploy).
Stalin was not intimidated. He put Beria in charge of developing nuclear weapons and the Soviets developed both the atomic and hydrogen bombs in record time, as a counter to the US threats.
They did this partly through espionage but they already had the nuclear physicists and the program.

1-The earth and its habitants has suffered enough from the atomic weapons or what is called WMD, now if the suffering has been from the use of the bombs or just testing the weapon in atmosphere or under ground the results has been the same. Here the deformation of earth is the evidence in what has been done to earth, every war and the bombs that are used would have a impact on earth and its habitants but for Boeing, Pentagon, Bank of England, Wall street and Federal reserve is yet to be recognized that there is a connections in weather change and all that earth quick and etc. now they want to attack Iran with nuclear bomb or as they called it WMD which was the reason to invade Iraq. My opinion is that only those who have a sense of humanity and for humanity to survive would understand this concept other wise they will remain politicians and no matter who they work for or if US has become a colony of Israel or not, for them is yet to take their head out of the sand and smell the realty that there is a relation between the use of force and peace which relates to mankind existence and its environment.

If Israel attacks Iran without provocation, i.e targets their nuclear program(or even their nuclear 'weapons' program) and Iran responds, as is their right under international law and common sense- AND THEN the U.S attack Iran with nuclear weapons – it will either mean WW3 or the soon-after collapse of the U.S/Israel power "configuration".
I could see China and Russia and maybe India(of the major economic powers) breaking off economic ties with the West…

2-Democracy is when the social concept works for all people, otherwise there is no democracy but a deception in defusing the democracy itself. If Israel is ever was a democracy they world have acted by not stealing the Arabs land. In that regard, NATO is a toll in snatching other nations land and Europeans or Americans politicians are no less then Israel is. For those of you politicians who would argue that they fight for freedom and democracy and therefore with their militarism regime they occupy other nations land, you are killing that nation to justify your say otherwise all that wars are about stealing the lands and peoples wealth, my answer to those of you is this: there are millions upon millions homeless people in America and Europe and beyond.., what the government or you as a politician from district have done for the growing number of homelessness lately..? On the contrary you are closing mental hospital and schools to save for the wars and the economical system closing factories to create homelessness and you call your social concept a “democracy” … What democracy if is not working for people.

Neither the US nor Israel will survive if either or both attack Iran.
Israel's end will be quick, the US's a little slower.
Depending on the scenario it may be Doomsday for most of the Northern Hemisphere.
But Iran has no choice but to respond to any attack by Israel or the US by an attack on both, no holds barred.
That both the Americans and the Israeli's are not persuaded that Iran has that capability is the most dangerous part of the present circumstances, though it is not the same logical situation posited in Strangelove.

There is no such thing as 3rd world, if there was such thing then question becomes who is first and then the second, the term.., 3rd world.., is part of the slavery and industrialized countries use this terms in their psychological global warfare against the poor countries where the poor’s are poor because of what has been stolen from them. The homeless people in US and Europe and other part of the world is the tool used by the social and political system in showing others to remain as a slave. In another word, if you do not obey, we make you jobless and if you don’t find a job then you will become a homeless with a mental problem and because we close the mental hospital to save money for wars then you become homeless and live in streets.

You are right and that i why I limited my time frame to the last 25 years or so. I may be totally off track with what eppie was getting at, but being a former Democrat I noticed that around 25 years ago the Dems shifted to the right while still claiming to embrace the traditional positions of the party. It was clearly visible while the slickster was in the oval office. Eppie gives a specific example of the nuclear strike option being on the table while at the same time he gets applause from many corners on his recent Nuclear Disarmament conference in Washington. Bush, and I truly hate his sorry a$$, would have been crucified for hypocrisy had he done the same imo.
