On Obama’s New National Security Team, Keep Your Eye on the Policy
President Obama announced his choices for key national security posts this past week, and there has been both celebration and gnashing of teeth in Washington and around the country. There is widespread belief that either or both of these nominees will have an immediate and profound effect on US policy. However, this belief is really just a mistaken over-emphasis on personnel over policy. We should not forget that cabinet secretaries serve the president, and not the other way around.
Many who object to our continued foreign policy of endless war and empire overseas feel encouraged by Obama’s choice of Senator Hagel to head the Defense Department. Hagel has shown some admirable willingness to advise caution overseas. He is seen as unenthusiastic over the prospects of a US war on Iran, which is certainly to be welcomed. But let us not forget that he did vote for the war against Iraq, he has expressed support for multi-lateral sanctions on Iran, and last year he wrote in the Washington Post that, on Iran, he supports “keeping all options on the table, including the use of military force.”
Nevertheless because he does represent a more moderate voice in foreign policy than the neo-conservatives can tolerate, they are dragging his name through the mud. In choosing Hagel, then, we can hope the president is signaling that he will pursue a less aggressive foreign policy in his second term. But we cannot count on it.
At the same time, the president has chosen John Brennan as Central Intelligence Agency director — a man who is considered the author of Obama’s destructive drone warfare policy, and who as such has been in charge of the president’s secret “kill list” that has already claimed the lives of three American citizens. He claimed in 2011 that there were no collateral deaths from the US drone attacks on Pakistan, which is simply not believable. We also should not forget that as then-CIA director George Tenet’s right hand man during the Bush presidency, Brennan was certainly involved in the manufactured intelligence and lies that led the US to attack Iraq.
The real problem is in placing too much emphasis on the person the president hires to carry out his foreign and defense policy, as it ignores that policy itself. If the president has decided to continue or even expand US military action overseas through more covert warfare and use of special operations forces, which seems to be the case, it will matter little who he chooses to carry out those policies. If the president decides to continue to provide support to rebels in Syria who have dubious ties to Islamic extremists, to continue to meddle in the internal affairs of countless countries overseas, to continue to refuse to even talk with Iran without preconditions, and so on, we will not see a return to foreign policy sanity no matter who occupies what position in the president’s cabinet.
So we should be optimistic that the president may see the wisdom in pursuing a foreign policy that is truly in our national interest, but we should always keep an eye on the policies over the personnel.

Finally – someone who gets it…
Rep. Paul is completely correct. Do not drink the Obama Kool-Aid. Even Justin Raimondo has succumbed to the notion that the Hagel appointment is some life-changing event in US foreign policy. You would think he'd know better by now.
Nothing is going to change in US foreign policy until the US suffers one or both of two events: 1) an economic collapse that reduces the US to the status of a (large) Third World country, or 2) a major military defeat, i.e., not just a defeat that causes the US to withdraw from another country, but one in which the US actually physically loses a large amount of its military assets.

Ron Paul gives a sober assessment.
Hagel does not herald a sea change in foreign policy – nor did Obama. In fact one worries that Hagel's desire to cast the Apartheid Jewish State adrift, a worthy policy in and of itself, is simply a way to allow the Empire to pursue ever more warlike policies in East Asia and to bring China down.
And that is a dangerous "pivot" for all of humanity.

I agree with Ron Paul's assertion that policy trumps personnel.
Here's more proof that Justin Raimondo assumption that personnel trumps policy is flawed:
It appears that Senators Charles Schumer of New York and Barbara Boxer of California who "initially had concerns over Hagel's nomination, have now declared their support after the former Republican senator made overtures to explain his views on Iran and Israel…"
So both Hagel and Brennan will be welcomed with open arms… so much for a confirmation war!

There is more here to consider than the direct impact of these appointments on our flawed foreign policy, as important as it is. Obama wants to reduce spending on foreign wars. And it is harder for neocons to line up its forces against this popular position. But Obama doesn't have the foggiest idea how to cleverly reduce spending on the military. He gets no assistance on that from his generals. Hagel should be able to help here, not so much setting policy but implementing it in a way that makes profligate warmaking more difficult.

Hagel, Brennan and Kerry are Obama puppets and self-serving bobbleheads. All of them are millionaires and know they can double their net worth working for Obama. Hagel recommended Biden for VP in 2008 and endorsed Bob Kerrey for Senate in 2012. This nomination is just a reward from Obama for being a good puppet. All 3 of them are Obama yes-men. We will be at war with Iran by May and at war in Mali by February.

I don't care if Hagel promises Schumer or Boxer that he is going grow a Ho Ching Minh beard…
The ONLY thing that matters is that Obama and Hagel stop Netanyahu and the Israel Lobby from forcing/mousetrapping the US into an attack on Iran – THAT'S IT.
It's a 'single issue'
If an Iran attack is stopped, Israeli Apartheid is without any effective cover and will be taken care of how Apartheid South Africa was taken care of – and then the Israeli Lobby no longer has any cover as well.
With the Netanyahu-hoaxed/mousestrapped pushing of the US into a war with Iran STOPPED – it's all over for Israeli Apartheid
Let's keep our eye on the PRIZE – it's Iran. The rest are dominoes
It's formulaic;
Hagel 'ON' = Iran 'OFF' = Israeli Apartheid 'OFF' = Israeli Lobby 'OFF'
(The Israeli Lobby 'OFF' = the 2nd American Revolution)

I think the policy is to use drones on Salafi Jihadist and other places where we will intervene. Then continue to use sanctions on Iran and possibly sabotage them for four years. I think that is what the appointments meant. Obama is signaling what he wants us to think his intentions are with these choices. It is why the Neocon/Likud Israel supporters are up in arms. There looks like there is a fracture in the Israel Lobby between those who want peace and those who want lsrael to continue on its destructive course. The policies Obama has and will engage in will probably not be good but I doubt they will reach the level of destructive lunacy that the Neocons crave. There has been a public airing about American foreign policy towards Israel and the Israel supporters in the US which I think is a positive thing. The Neocons/Likud supporters rant about Hagel being an anti-Semite but that hasn't stopped his nomination yet.
The next 4 years are set in stone on foreign policy. If someone gets in office who is more of an interventionist than Obama and has Neocons as minders then who knows what will happen. What will an American public be willing to do after 4 more years of false anti-Iranian propaganda?

Hagel 'ON' = Iran 'ON'
Here's the CBS article I was referring to above:
Schumer and Hagel met for 90 minutes Monday afternoon at the White House, and Schumer phoned Hagel this morning to inform him of his decision, according to a Senate aide.
Schumer said in his statement that Hagel had "rejected a strategy of containment" for Iran "and expressed the need to keep all options on the table in confronting that country." He also said that Hagel went further, saying he would do "whatever it takes" to keep Iran from a nuclear weapon, including using military force. Schumer said Hagel informed him that his "top priority" as defense secretary would be planning military contingencies tied to Iran. Hagel, who voted against sanctions against Iran as a Republican Nebraska senator, told Schumer he supports the stringent sanctions put in place against the country under President
Schumer said Hagel also said he considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization "notwithstanding any letters he refused to sign in the past" and assured him that he does not support negotiations with Hamas until the group renounces violence against Israel and recognizes that nation's right to exist. In 2009, Hagel signed a letter calling on the president to open direct talks with Hamas leaders. As a senator, he declined to sign a letter to the European Union calling on Hezbollah to be deemed a terrorist group.
Schumer also said Hagel expressed regret for the "Jewish lobby" comment and promised to work to deliver F-35 joint strike fighters to Israel on time and provide U.S. assistance on the "Iron Dome."
"I know some will question whether Senator Hagel's assurances are merely attempts to quiet critics as he seeks confirmation to this critical post," Schumer said. "But I don't think so. Senator Hagel realizes the situation in the Middle East has changed, with Israel in a dramatically more endangered position than it was even five years ago. His views are genuine, and reflect this new reality."
"In general, I believe any President deserves latitude in selecting his own advisors," he added. "While the Senate confirmation process must be allowed to run its course, it is my hope that Senator Hagel's thorough explanations will remove any lingering controversy regarding his nomination."
Schumer's statement comes a day after Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., announced her support for Hagel. Boxer, who had held off backing Hagel due to his controversial statements, said she decided to support him after speaking to him "extensively" on the phone and after receiving answers to several questions she had for him.
"First and foremost, he has pledged without reservation to support President Obama's polices – policies that I believe have made our world safer and our alliances stronger," Boxer said in a statement Monday night.
"I asked him about a number of issues – including America's special relationship with Israel, the threats posed by Iran to the world and the treatment of women and gay and lesbian members of our military – and his answers were reassuring and show a sensitivity and understanding of these issues. In addition, Senator Hagel has pledged to meet with me once he has been confirmed for a more detailed discussion about the Defense Department's efforts to combat sexual assault in the military," she added.
Schumer's and Boxer's support for Hagel is likely to prompt other Democrats with ties to pro-Israel groups to follow suit, and should significantly ease his path to confirmation.

What needs to be done by the US Government is this: Close all military bases abroad and bring the troops home. This alone will save Trillions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ so that this nation will be able to catch up with most of Europe, as well as China and Japan, in modernizing its antiquated railroad industry with high-speed bullet trains that can travel East to West and North to South in a fraction of the time that those outdated trains now do.
We have an obligation to put our population's needs first. We have no need whatsoever to spend more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on militarization than all of the industrialized world combined. All this does is bring misery and suffering upon our own citizenry. We must stop copying North Korea, or past Empires such as Rome, for example.

Just the fact that Hagel would work for them period, should tell you something. Look at what they are doing to this country, does anyone believe they have any respect for anyone elses? Those countries will be as big a cesspool as this one in no time, but hey, we have the freedom to go f ourselves.
