Iran Sanctions Act Definite Step Toward War
Statement on Mark-up of HR 1905, the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011, House Foreign Affairs Committee
I would like to express my concerns over the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 and my opposition to it being brought to the Floor for a vote. Let us be clear on one critical matter: the sanctions against Iran mandated by this legislation are definite steps toward a US attack on Iran. They will also, if actually applied, severely disrupt global trade and undermine the US economy, thereby harming our national security.
I am surprised and disturbed that the committee viewed this aggressive legislation to be so bipartisan and uncontroversial that a recorded vote was not even called.
Some may argue that we are pursuing sanctions so as to avoid war with Iran, but recent history teaches us otherwise. For how many years were sanctions placed on Iraq while we were told they were necessary to avoid war? Thousands of innocent Iraqis suffered and died under US sanctions and still the US invaded, further destroying the country. Are we safer after spending a trillion dollars or more to destroy Iraq and then rebuild it?
These new sanctions against Iran increasingly target other countries that seek to trade with Iran. The legislation will severely punish foreign companies or foreign subsidiaries of US companies if they do not submit to the US trade embargo on Iran. Some 15 years after the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 failed to bring Iran to its knees, it is now to be US foreign policy to threaten foreign countries and companies.
During this mark-up one of my colleagues argued that if Mercedes-Benz wants to sell trucks to Iran, they should not be allowed to do business in the United States. Does anyone believe this is a good idea? I wonder how the Americans working at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama would feel about banning Mercedes from the United States. Or perhaps we might ask the 7,600 Americans who work in the BMW factory in Spartanburg, SC how they would feel. Should the American consumer be denied the right to purchase these products? Is the United States really prepared to take such aggressive and radical action against its NATO ally Germany?
Likewise, the application of the sanctions in this legislation would have a dramatic impact on US commercial and diplomatic relations with Russia and China, who both do business with Iran. It would impose strong sanctions on these countries and would prohibit foreign business leaders – and their spouses and children – from entering the United States. Do we want to start a trade war – or worse – with Russia and China?
The Iran Threat Reduction Act authorizes what will no doubt be massive amounts of US taxpayer money to undermine the Iranian government and foment another "Green Revolution" there. We will establish and prop up certain factions over others, send them enormous amounts of money, and attempt to fix any resulting elections so that our preferred candidates win. Considering the disturbing aftermath of our "democracy promotion" operations in places like Egypt, Iraq, Libya, where radical forces have apparently come out on top, it may be fair to conclude that such actions actually undermine US national security rather than bolster it.
Sanctions do not work. They are precursors to war and usually lead to war. They undermine our economy and our national security. They result in terrible, unnecessary suffering among the civilian population in the target countries and rarely even inconvenience their leaders. We must change our foreign policy from one of interventionism and confrontation to cooperation and diplomacy. This race to war against Iran is foolhardy and dangerous. As with the war on Iraq, the arguments for further aggression and war on Iran are based on manipulations and untruths. We need to learn our lesson and reject this legislation and the push for war.

I'm willing to bet that not one set of congressional ears heard a word of what Dr. Paul spoke on the House floor.

Any so-called "legislation" such as this should require our congressional swine to be counted. Enough with the voice votes from which these rats hide behind. What's the big secret then? Cowards!

It's amazing how a country which has given the world such brilliant and amazing things, can have so many dumb people, who elect such evil sobs to office.

Keep speaking the truth Ron Paul! Even when I don't agree with you, at least I know you're being honest. Can we really say that about other candidates? I'm not so sure…

Ron Paul
Thank you for alerting us to the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 and for bringing it to the Floor for a vote. You give me hope in the system.
Is the rest of Washington so far removed from reality that the only thing they have in their minds is November? Do they put their own seats ahead of security, jobs and long term policy objectives.
I am glad you asked the hard questions
Do sanctions work in the first place?
Do we punish ourself when we punish our trading partners.
Will further destabilization of the middle east make us stronger.
Can we be strong if we kill our own economy.
Will sanction just lead to more failed middle east policy and ultimately lead us into another ill conceived war?
The American people had the right to have the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 honestly debated. I am glad that you care and shine your light on some of these dark corners.

What is interesting about a secret ballot is that our elected representatives will have the opportunity to vote the way they really want to vote, without their leaders in Israel knowing how they actually voted. It could all prove interesting, we will soon learn how they really feel. I´ve always suspected that they feel humiliated over the control Israel has – here is their opportunity to express themselves. We may be surprised.

I'm willing to bet that I know, without seeing any vote record, how my representative will vote. There's a track record.

The US government minus Ron Paul are the biggest threat to the American people, especially since it is bought and paid for by AIPAC, and numerous war affiliated companies. Americans must fight these treasonous traitors destroying what is left of our country.

Iran does not nor has ever had a "weapons program"
so far there has been no evidence that iran has any weapons program or intention for a weapons program. the NIE claimed that Iran stopped its weapons program in 2003 but failed to say what that so called program encompassed. The fact is there has never been a weapons program in Iran and as far as I know only brief discussions of it among the top brass of the iranian military AFTER the US invaded Iraq thinking that they were next in line…..The clerics quickly ruled out building nukes as a deterrent as un-islamic.
As far as I know, a discussion is not necessarily evidence of intention, let alone participation.
We by contrast have not only built the biggest weapons stockpile in history, enough to murder every human on the planet, but have already murdered half a million innocent japanese in cold blood. we are the ones continually threatening world peace with the suggestion of preventative nuclear first strikes…..
We should be under sanctions; we should have our leaders tried for crimes against humanity, not iran

Ron Paul talks sense – just about the last American politician to do so.
The others, from Obama to the GOPers, are the slaves of the pro-Israel lobby.

This is exactly why despite my serious reservations about Dr. Paul's domestic social agenda I will support him financially and with my vote in 2012. He and Bernie Sanders are the only voices for sanity in U.S. foreign policy. Iran is no more a threat to America than Mexico, in fact Mexican drug cartels are kill far more Americans with their products and their guns than Iran and Iran is no more a threat to Israel than Syria.

I think you misunderstand. I believe what Dr. Paul is saying is that it already passed with a voice vote. There will be no "secret ballot." Voice votes are commonly used when there is overwhelming support. However, I'm surprised there's no House rule that allows Dr. Paul to call for a recorded vote. That's the effect in the Senate when a member objects to "unanimous consent."

I'm sure the US won't sanction a large corporation like Mercedes. Dr. Paul is correct; it would entail a loss of far too many jobs.
However, there will be thousands of small businesses that do not have the protection of size. Intentionally or not, this is just another example of our government's favoritism toward large corporations.

Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 another unnecessary, cruel and counterproductive law from the beacon of democracy. There has been NO threat, NO invasion of anyone by Iran for centuries. Israel wants to be the only nuclear power in the ME, is belligerent and threatening but does not submit to IAEA inspections, yet is supported by the USA at tremendous loss to the USA itself. A huge, important, strategic oil-producer, Iran would be a good partner, not an enemy to the USA and the rest of us if it were not for the cowardly submission to a tiny, illegal occupier of Palestine.

May not agree with all of the libertarian planks but a true leader needs to step away from the pack and gather a new stream. You have to ask which us pol can stand against netanyahoo putin and other emerging EU extremists

Imagine Venezuella, with its hard line USA hater dictator putting his hands on a few nukes? Oh, sorry, I mean nucleur capabilities for "civil needs" such as alternative to better electicity. Will you guys in Texas and Florida and New Mexico sleep well at night knowing a fanatic, democracy and capitalist hater had a few nukes?
You guys are all smart over there on the other side of the world. Living the American dream.
It should be in the worlds interests that a pschyco like that would be disarmed.
Sorry to say folks, the Jews were almost exterminated some 70 years ago, we wont let it happen again. Israel will attack alone if needed. I am so sorry for those 5000 employees of Mercedes or BMW that will be fired, but we the Jews want to live.

Get your facts right. There was never a "Palestine". Look it up.
There were and are Palestinians. The UN divided the piece of land that Jews and Arabs lived in in 1948 to 2 states. One Israel and one Palestine. The Jews agreed and the Arabs refused. So now they cry.
Also Gaza is not occupied since 2005. So what occupation are you talking about? The west bank? Well, thats former Jordan ( untill 1967). Why dont the Jordaniens want it back? they refude to take it. Israel is "stuck with it", dont you see??
Nobody wants the Palestians. Perhaps they want there own state? sure, my pleause. All they need to do is say that they agree to stay on their side and recognize my right to stay on my side. No occucpation whats so over. But they refuse. Refuse and refuse. Ok, eat shit.

Muslim fanatics are a danger to the free world. So what's your problem with the Jewish lobby?

At least the Jews do money, gold, diamonds, gambling, stocks. They dont blow up airplanes like the TWA flight or 9/11 or Oklahoma or…many other. You see, the Jews like money, the Muslims like blood.
I understand you hate Jews. Thats fine. Dont do business with them. But watch closely the passengers on your next flight, if he's a muslim and upset, he'll take you down with all passengers, in the name of Allah of course.
Your call.
