Let’s Get Out of the Middle East – and the UN
Listen to Rep. Ron Paul deliver this address.
The Palestinian Authority’s recent announcement that it would seek U.N. recognition as an independent state dominated the news and the political debate in the United States last week, though in truth it should mean very little to us. Only a political class harboring the illusion it can run the world obsesses over the aspirations of a tiny population on a tiny piece of land thousands of miles away. Remember, the U.N. initiated this persistent conflict with its 1947 Partition Plan.
Unfortunately, the debate is dominated by those who either support the Israeli side in the conflict, or those who support the Palestinian desire for statehood. We rarely seem to hear the view of those who support the U.S. side and U.S. interests. I am on that side. I believe that we can no longer police the world. We can no longer bribe the Israelis and Palestinians to continue an endless “peace process” that goes nowhere. It is not in our interest to hector the Palestinians or the Israelis, or to “export” democracy to the region but reject it when people vote the “wrong” way.
I have reservations about the Palestinian drive for U.N. recognition. Personally, I wish the United States would de-recognize the United Nations. As most readers already know, in every Congress I introduce legislation to end our membership in that organization. The U.N. is a threat to our sovereignty — and as we are the main source of its income, it is a threat to our economic well-being. Increasingly over the past several years, we see the United Nations providing political and legal cover for the military aspirations of interventionists rather than serving as an international forum to preserve peace. Neoconservatives in the U.S. have grown to love the United Nations as they co-opt the organization under the guise of endless “reform.” Under the sovereignty-destroying doctrine of “Responsibility to Protect,” adopted at the 2005 World Summit, the U.N. takes it upon itself to intervene in internal conflicts of its member states whenever it believes that human rights are being violated. Thus under “Responsibility to Protect,” the U.N. provides the green light for a kind of global no-knock raid on any sovereign country.
If asked, I would personally counsel the Palestinians to avoid the United Nations. U.N. membership and participation is no guarantee that sovereignty will be respected. We see what happens to U.N. members such as Iraq and Libya when those countries’ leaders fall out of favor with U.S. administrations: under U.S. and allied pressure, a fig-leaf resolution is adopted in the U.N. to facilitate devastating military intervention. When the U.N. gave NATO the green light to bomb Libya, there was no genocide taking place. It was a purely preventive war. The result? Thousands dead, a destroyed country, and extremely dubious new leaders.
While I do not see U.N. membership as a particularly productive move for the Palestinian leadership, I do not believe the U.S. should use its position in the U.N. Security Council to block their membership. I believe in self-determination of peoples, and I recognize that peoples may wish to pursue statehood by different means. As we saw after the Cold War, numerous new states were born out of the ruins of the USSR as the various old Soviet Republics decided that smaller states were preferable to an enormous and oppressive multinational conglomerate.
The real, pro-U.S. solution to the problems in the Middle East is for us to end all foreign aid, stop arming foreign countries, encourage peaceful diplomatic resolutions to conflicts, and disengage militarily. In others words, follow Jefferson’s admonition: “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.”

Ron Paul we rarely hear an American support Americas interests because nearly every person in the US legislature is beholden to the purse strings of a Foreign Government entity that wields immence power in the United States. AIPAC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Until it is gone, and its power taken from it, the US Legislature will bend over and take one for the OTHER team!

The fault lies in the Constitution. The founders believed Congress would be forever an effective balance of power to the office of president, because they assumed members would hold USA interests above all others, including personal. They did not foresee the day when Congress would be corrupted and operating in tandem with a corrupt presidency. Thus, the Constitution has no legal vehicle to permit a veto or reclaim by the citizen majority. The only vehicle is election, which, in a corrupted system with an ignorant and apathetic citizenry, is now proven to be an ineffective means to uphold the basic tenets of the Constitution. A change in presidents is a first step, but much more needs to be done. We need more than a few the likes of Ron Paul.

The very creation of the UN was a great error. A sort of establishing some sort of bureaucracy built on floating generalities. One can easily see that like in the Libya "resolution" which is anything but a resolution, but simply vague generaqlities, unsupported by real facts, but itself based on other vague generalities. Like one was simply to prove one's good intentions, and that is what suffices for people to live on. Sort of a human semi-religiosity, or self-delusion created to keep populations dumbed down and obeying. http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2011/sc10200.do…
Now in real life, one does NOT have the necessity of creating a state apparatus for the cooperation of a few hundred persons. It hinders real communication with its barriers of concepts and procedures. The UN is a self-created both humanly debasing, factually falsifying, and reactionary state relation reality. Thus Palestine is forced to seek some state to get to that rather worthless company to seek some protection.
It is absurd theatre for the masses, and educating them to participate in the plays.

Unlike Ron Paul ,the Palestinians must deal with reality, and that reality means United States support both militarily and economically for Israel, the brutal occupation of Palestinie and the illegal expansion onto Palestinian territory. The fact is that Golda Meir tried to define the Palestinians out of existence with her quip that there is no such thing as a Palestinian, but when the world recognizes there is a Palestine and there are Palestinians the groundwork will be there for the eventual realization of the dream. Recognizing Palestine will define Palestine's border as those existing in 1967, officially and morally asserting the illegality of the occupation. And as already emphasized Palestinians will have access to the International Criminal Court where they can take action against Israel and indiividual Israelis who will thus be exposed to the risks of being arrested when they travel. Most of all it will emphasize the hypocrisy and bankrupcy of stated American and Israeli ideals. Let's face it, U.S. aid for Israel continues and increases even at a time when Congress cannot agree on providing disaster relief to its own citizens and will continue even if the elderly have to be thrown out onto the streets when Social Secuity and Medicare benefits are reduced.

I would support Ron Paul if he wasn't a Republican – and I was American(lol).
But seriously – the truth is it not the UN which is a threat to U.S national security. It's the other way around. Dr(?) Paul needs to read a little history of the U.S and the UN. Nor do I see simpy cutting off the UN as the right thing to do. The US has been withholding payments for years; I'm not sure whether this is still the case, but I recall the U.S owing the UN millions of unpaid fees.
Under the circumstances I can understand the reasoning behind dumpign the UN from some quarters in the U.S, but it's not the right move.
Ron Paul needs to better explain how his 'smaller'(i.e none)government will function and what will happen to millions who depend on government for subsistence – i.e the sick and disabled, elderly, unemployed etc – I've not been comfortable with his dodging on these issues, quite frankly…

For the record I support a heavily socialized, heavily regulated form of capitalism. I support a return to laws against monopolies — that we used to have in Canada before 'free trade' agreements- a complete rejection of Chicago 'economics' neo-liberal policies(Greenspan and Co.) which have been nothing more than an mostly overt conspiracy to literally steal the wealth from the majority of hard working peoples. A quite criminal process that needs to be called out for what it is. I support what government in a democracy was supposed to be: for the people, by the people. I don't worry about the size of it – I worry about the way it's been used as an instrument for the wealthy to subjecate the poor. It needs to change- not be destroyed.

It was a great idea that was almost immedietely destroyed by those who sought to abuse and manipulate a system brought into play after the misery of WW2. The foundation -international law – was, imho, a brilliant idea and continues to be. Unfortunately the UN has to be given authority to act – something the U.S has NEVER been willing to do. Thus the UN became a tool for the legitimization of American imperialism – NOT what it was intended to be.
The real problem has been American hegemony. Those who are attacking the UN as not in American' interests' must realize that it those 'interests' that must change. And are changing…

ehhhh
this is why I don't especially care for Paul
He comes out on the right side of some things but always for wrong and confused reasons
The UN is not in any way a threat to our sorveriegnty, we run the UN. We ultimate veto power over everything they do.
Our aid to Israel and Palestine is not designed to keep them in any kind of peace process, it is designed to divide the Palestinians and to prop up the Israelis. The peace process is propaganda intended for the west

I also find it disturbing that Dr. Paul believes that having America drop the UN is in the best interests of the Palestinians. "I would personally council the Palestinians to avoid the UN…memership is not quarantee of sovereignty". True – but avoiding the UN gives the Palestinians absolutely no help, no -protection ffrom an American- created rogue superpower. I'm sure that's they type of councelling the Palestinian could do without.

Americas main worry is jobs witch its great to have one but they should really be worrying about a dollar collapes as should the rest of the world. The government is not smart but smarter then the act. They no the illegal wars military bases around the wourld and being the corrupt police men of the world is not affordable.IT almost clear its intensional to make it so only the rich get buy were life becomes a struggel for every one else.It is bad as it is that America has held nations down stole there resorces and watched them stave when there was a proper way to feed the world. After the collapes of the USSR America should have not spent themselfs and the world into the situation that happened in 08 and soon is going to happen but be long lasting like 15 years and many will die.Die of famine people that have not had jobs and were unable to prepare and disabeld people that can't survive without at the minimum a familly that has money and is prepared. Then there are the millions that no nothing and think everything is peachy.I really think this was planed and that seems like common sence and not from shows that say the same if smart and informed people really looked at the situation is a way for the scum to get there wish a NWO.

Continue-were the rich live and the poor unless prepared and no what to do die and take care of the so called overpopulation. They will get exactly what they want well the entire world suffers and dies.If more people like millions many millions payed attention and fought back this could have been stoped. The chance no is slim but the secound we stop fighting back and trying we aer dead.As far as the UN is run by America even if that was not mosts intention.Screw Israel America is broak and taking the world down with it.The rich and powerfull when America can no longer help will face all the world that hates them for all the evil crimes.I've said many times its not white and black its rich and poor.

So the UN is being used as a tool for legitimizing modern day conquest … and whose fault it that?
What is the UN other than an artificial construct designed to get people together to talk as equals before they shoot each others' poor and disadvantaged. You want to fix the UN, start with the biggest turds floating in bowl: The Security Council, starting with us. Pulling out will change nothing for us, staying in will change nothing for us. The change must come from within ourselves. The UN is just a reflection of what we've put into it. So far, all we've put into is an insatiable military juggernaut whose hegemony is only matched by its hypocrisy. We want different results? Put something different into the machine. It's a giant case of GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

AIPAC should be required to register as what it is: an agent for a foreign government, and the enormous subsidies the American taxpayer is forced to pay out must end in order for us to pull out of the Middle East. The pullout would follow naturally.

Actually, creation of the UN was one of FDR's main goals in WW2. It was always talked about int terms of maintaining peace, but had the real intention of institutionalizing US and Wall Street power. The IMF and the World Bank were started at the same time, part of the same process. I'm afraid Rep. Paul is probably right – we'd all be better off without it.

Uh, Dr. Paul, what planet do you live on where you think that in the US there is any significant political discussions of anything other than Israeli interests? I assume you're talking about debate in the US. Why would the rest of the world be interested in US interests? I agree with what Paul is saying overall. However, his dialog on this issue is weird. I get the impression he holds a certain set of views and is tip toeing around them because of Zionist pressure.
The "debate" is better characterized by America supporting Israeli interests over US interests. You know this to be true, Dr. Paul. Why don't you just come out and say it?

We need campaign finance reform, not the Alice in wonderland system we currently have which allows whatever tribe has the most money to buy our degenerate political class.
