Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in the United States today for a much anticipated visit. He will do a little fund-raising, will speak before Congress and at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) annual conference, and will meet with President Barack Obama. Netanyahu can expect the visit to go smoothly, with an adoring joint session of congress rising to its feet to applaud him and more adulation from the AIPAC gathering. AIPAC’s gala dinner will undoubtedly include many members of both the congress and the Obama Administration vying to be seen. Netanyahu will likely have a couple of friendly encounters with the press corps, which will lob a few softball questions his way. The meeting with Obama might just possibly have a couple of sharp edges when they converse privately unless “Israel’s lawyer” Dennis Ross is hovering anywhere near and taking corrective action, but the president knows when he has been whipped and will surely steer clear of any controversy over Israeli behavior.
It is anticipated that Netanyahu will excoriate Iran before unveiling a phony peace plan which will ostensibly open the door to negotiations with the Palestinians on all outstanding issues as long as Hamas is excluded from the process and President Mahmoud Abbas agrees to take all steps necessary to guarantee Israel’s security. Which will be impossible to do unless the Palestinians surrender completely and cede to Israel actual sovereignty plus all their land and water before moving to Jordan. Even normally oblivious congressmen will know that an Israeli prime minister talking peace is all a game and a lie, as will Obama, but they will all stand up and cheer anyway. Nobody ever loses by being nice to Israel.
Since no one will ask the prime minister anything that will require a genuine answer, I will be sending the following ten questions that I have come up with to Bibi by way of the press officer at the Israeli embassy in Washington. I would recommend that readers of this column who feel the questions are legitimate do the same. The press officer is Jonathan Peled. The embassy fax number is 202-364-5423 and the email address is press@washington.mfa.gov.il. If you send anything over, feel free to add other questions that you have come up with.
-
Israel has by far the strongest military in the Middle East plus a nuclear arsenal that is unique to the region coupled with delivery systems that can strike any target in Europe and Asia. It also has a defensive missile shield largely funded by the US taxpayer that no one else has. You have a history of attacking and crushing your neighbors whenever you consider yourself provoked, just as you did last weekend when you shot dead twenty unarmed Palestinian protesters and used tank cannon fire against civilians. In light of all that, why do you keep complaining about being vulnerable and threatened by the other countries in your region?
-
Speaking of attacking, you rocketed, strafed, and torpedoed a US Naval vessel the USS Liberty in international waters in 1967, killing 34 of the crew and injuring 174. The attack was both unprovoked and brutal, intended to sink the ship and kill everyone on board. You claim it was an accident but have never given American investigators access to your government records. It sounds like a cover-up and many Americans are wondering whether you will ever come clean on what happened that day. Will you ever open up your records relating to the Liberty?
-
You are the 27th wealthiest nation in the world per capita, just ahead of Italy, according to the International Monetary Fund. So why do you continue to receive $3 billion from the US taxpayer every year, a sum that some in congress including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor want to make a permanent untouchable subsidy through incorporation into the US defense budget rather than as part of the foreign aid package. What can possibly justify American taxpayers subsidizing the Israeli standard of living, which includes free medical care and university education, at a time when social programs in the US are being cut?
-
Israel spies on the United States more than any ostensibly friendly country. You steal our defense secrets and our commercially valuable proprietary information and then use it or barter it to your advantage and America’s disadvantage. Prior to 9/11 you were running a massive and illegal spying operation inside the United States and you might even have known in advance about some aspects of the terrorist attack. You have even penetrated our telecommunications systems, allegedly including the White House. You do what you do because you know you can get away with it, that the Justice Department and President are reluctant to arrest and convict Israeli spies. Don’t you think that it is time for Israel to admit that it has been spying on Americans and for it to make a firm commitment to stop doing so with sanctions for non-compliance like shutting your exports out of our domestic market?
-
Speaking of spies, you have been regularly asking that convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard be released from his American prison. Pollard stole more classified information than any spy in the history of the United States and may be responsible for the deaths of a number of US intelligence officers. He has never even regretted his actions. He is a hero to many in Israel, including some leading figures in your own government. How can someone who has done so much damage to the United States be considered a hero in a country that is the biggest recipient of US aid dollars and that relies on Washington for political protection? It suggests that you are willing to take our money and rely on our political support but that you don’t really respect us very much. How do you explain it?
-
The United States has used its veto scores of times in the United Nations Security Council to shield Israel from any criticism. Most recently this was done to protect you from criticism of your settlements policy, which is both inhumane and illegal under international law. In spite of the fact that the resolution in question was carefully drafted using language that Washington had previously approved, the US nevertheless vetoed it even though America’s Ambassador to the UN made clear that it was against US interests to do so. Protecting you makes Washington a hypocrite and a liar before the eyes of the entire world and it endangers all Americans when they travel overseas. Isn’t it time for Israel to begin accepting the consequences for its own policies and stop using its powerful lobby to make Washington act against the interests of the American people?
-
Many believe that the United States went to war with Iraq partly because of pressure from Israel and its friends in the Bush Administration. Iraq did not threaten the US and the war has now lasted eight years, has killed nearly 5,000 Americans, and has cost trillions of dollars. Now you have told us that Israel would like to see the United States attack Iran. Since 1995 your government has repeatedly warned that Iran is either six months or a year away from having a nuclear weapon. The timetable slips every time you make a new prediction and you never seem to be embarrassed by your inability to anticipate actual developments in Iran. It appears that Iran might not really want to have a bomb and might never have the capability to make one even if it decides to move in that direction. It would seem that you have always been exaggerating the Iranian threat to turn Iran into America’s enemy as well as your own. Recently your former head of Mossad Meir Dagan said that attacking Iran would be “the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” Isn’t it time to stop citing Iran as a justification for the American military’s costly and dangerous remaking of the Middle East to suit Israel?
-
The endless Israel-Palestine conflict does terrible damage to American interests worldwide. Even General David Petraeus and Vice President Joe Biden have admitted that it endangers American soldiers overseas. Terrorist groups like al-Qaeda have repeatedly cited Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians as a principal reason for attacking the United States and Americans since Washington enables Israel to behave without any restraint. Shouldn’t your country delegitimize the terrorist argument by behaving responsibly and beginning to take genuine steps that will satisfy reasonable Palestinian demands for a viable state?
-
Groups like Hezbollah and Hamas are called terrorist but they are really resistance organizations that have grown in stature by standing up against Israeli occupation of Lebanon and Palestine. Neither threatens the United States in any way. Both have morphed into legitimate political parties and Hamas has offered Israel a fifty year truce. As there is no possibility of any sort of peace agreement in the Middle East without including Hezbollah and Hamas isn’t it time to start talking? And also to Syria, which has made plain that it wants a settlement? A useful starting point might be the 2002 King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia proposal for a comprehensive peace settlement which would have all of Israel’s Arab neighbors recognizing Israel in exchange for fixed borders and creation of a Palestinian state. Israel has rejected the plan. Given the unrest resulting from the Arab Spring, isn’t it time to reconsider?
-
You have avowed racists in your government, most particularly your Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who has called for the execution of Arabs in the Israeli parliament who met with Hamas representatives, has advocated drowning Palestinian prisoners in the Dead Sea, has demanded expelling any Arab citizen who would not agree to a loyalty oath to Israel as a Jewish state, and might even have called for a nuclear strike on Gaza. Isn’t it time to distance yourself from such policies if you want to be seen as a genuine statesman instead of the leader of an extremist party?

It would be nice to confront Bibi publicly with two things that would rub any American raw:
1) Saying that "America is easily controlled." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkN1KMLZH4o
2) Saying that 9-11 was "a good thing." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W6LdB24-wU

I can certainly understand and appreciate Philip's desire to make a symbolic statement. However, I'm sure he realize that, for all the chance he has of his questions ever reaching Bibi, he might as well print them out, fold them into a paper airplane, throw them out of his bedroom window, and pray that a thermal updraft carries them to the Israeli Embassy and drops them into Mr. Peled's lap.

Thanks to Phil Giraldi for this lucid summary, and if sanity prevailed then his questions would be receiving widespread and urgent attention across United States media outlets, rather than being aired in the relative backwater of antiwar.com. As a European I have no legitimate grounds for contacting the Israel embassy in Washington regarding these issues, but would urge every US citizen who shares Mr Giraldi's concerns to do so. Netanyahu needs to leave the United States after this visit understanding that the game has changed, and that the American people have finally woken up to the nature of the monster which their governments have been aiding and abetting since 1967. Enough is enough, and Israel has to finally understand that it's greatest need is to begin to live in peaceful coexistence with its neighbours, if it is to survive. A rational and mature US leadership would be delivering this very obvious message to Netanyahu, but in the absence of such then it's all down to you the people to take up the slack.

Antiwar.com is no backwater. Most of the analysis here is too unvarnished and cutting edge for the so-called mainstream establishments. A better strategy is to pay the quarterly Antiwar.com dues, and then spread the word.
The MSM is broken beyond repair, and this is the future.

Agree with most of these points, however, the last point could turn out to be somewhat hypocritical. The next time the Republican Party comes topower, theyare likely to have similar views towards blacks and Arabs that Avigdor Lieberman does.

I am a US citizen, and I have forwarded these questions, as well as my own, to Jonathan Peled via email. I will next be faxing it, as well.
Thanks, Phil, for a great article. Hopefully the embassy's inbox will be overrun with letters, showing them that all Americans are not on board.
I agree, Grant, Antiwar.com is definitely NOT the backwater, but a leading voice for sanity.

Netanyahu needs to leave the United States after this visit '
bibi is a US citizen. He grew up on the rich community along the mainline of Philadelphia. His father was a college profession at the University of Penn. Bibi tears would get an oscar if he was an actor and his tears are part of the Israel political games. I am not sure how we continue to have dual citizens when they clearly have loyalty to one over the other. I think it long overdue that dual citizen should be required a loyality oath. They want a loyality oath in Israel so lets adopt their rules. If a person will not take an oath to be at least equal in his/her loyality then they should surrender the USA citizenship. They state our strength is our diversity but do we really need someone like Bibi in our country telling us how his country is our friend?

Just heard Obama's mid-east speech and it sounded like it must have been written for him by Bibi or some one at AIPAC. The message was all too familiar
1) Big bad Iran is the biggest threat in the world and we spend a dis-proportional amount of time talking about Iran despite a plethora of news from Bahrain, Yemen, Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon KSA , etc. Why dont we just have a 1 hour daily Iran bashing on CNN these days like Fox does?
2) ISrael one again given a greeen light to continue its ethnic cleansing project, with the same false cliches parroted that
- Hamas must accept Israels "right to exist" when no other country in the world accepts any other country's "right to exist",
- Israel must remain a "jewish and democratic" state(in other words a racist apartheid state where arabs have no rights except to "live like dogs or die like dogs" as Golda Meir once said), and that democracy only exists for european jews. Kind of like Apartheid south africas policy of being "white and democratic"
-That Israel should retreat to 1967 borders but with fine print that says it really doesnt have to considering that Obama just conceded Jerusalem to Israel and said that "land swaps" take place, meaning israel can keep the land it has annexed so far and the palestinians can basically go to H3LL

Mr. Giraldi:
I wish you would get off Israel's back.
All they did was steal another people's country, killing thousands of indigenous in the process.
They're just like us! (except we killed millions of indigenous.)
It's the American way!
Oh, yes, they bomb our ships, spy on us and have taken control control of our media and congress and have set up a stooge in a suit in the White House to do their bidding.
What's wrong with that? Money opens all doors.

I have no idea who Wayne Madison is, but he wrote this piece of politcal insite.
"The Israeli Lobby owns the Congress, media, Hollywood, Wall Street, both political parties, and the White House. This kind of talk will get people fired by this lobby, as we have seen recently with White House correspondent Helen Thomas and CNN anchor Rick Sanchez. However, many Americans are growing tired of the arrogance of the Israel Lobby and their bigoted attitudes toward anyone who challenges their influence-peddling and their ridiculous insistence that Israel must be supported because of some ancient fairy tales involving some tribes who wandered the deserts of the Middle East and saw and heard non-existent things because of sun stroke, drinking bad water, and smoking local hallucinogenic plants."

Mr. Giralidi,
You really define the term "selected truth" -
"why do you keep complaining about being vulnerable and threatened by the other countries in your region? " – perhaps you do not remember the thousand of rockets targeting civilians over the last 10 years from the defenseless Palestinians. Or the human bpmbs that insist on murdering for martyrdom or an Iran the constantly calls for the destruction of the Zionist enity while developing nuclear weapons.
"…You have even penetrated our telecommunications systems, allegedly including the White House…" very impressive, I believ this was taken directly out of teh elders of Zion. Do you believ Jews are also poisining your wells and using the blood of your babies for passover ?
"Terrorist groups like al-Qaeda have repeatedly cited Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians as a principal reason for attacking the United States and Americans since Washington enables Israel to behave without any restraint." – just a correction here Israel is only the small Satan their main gripe is with the big satan the USA – I would think a respected Journalist would know this.
"Speaking of attacking, you rocketed, strafed, and torpedoed a US Naval vessel the USS Liberty in international waters in 1967, killing 34 of the crew and injuring 174. " – funny have you have to go back over 40 years to make an argument against Israel but you then say "Groups like Hezbollah and Hamas are called terrorist but they are really resistance organizations that have grown in stature by standing up against Israeli occupation of Lebanon and Palestine. Neither threatens the United States in any way." – Really because almost 20 years after the Liberty 241 marines were murdered by Hezbollah in Beruit…
I am not sure if you are purposely leaving out facts or are just aware. For your sake I will try to believe this are honest mistakes… I would recheck all the facts in the article…

JERUSALEM — Israel's prime minister on Thursday gave a cool reception to President Barack Obama's Mideast policy speech, warning a withdrawal from the West Bank wold leave Israel vulnerable to attack and setting up what could be a tense meeting at the White House.
“Bahrain is a long-standing partner, and we are committed to its security. We recognize that Iran has tried to take advantage of the turmoil there, and that the Bahraini government has a legitimate interest in the rule of law. Indeed, one of the broader lessons to be drawn from this period is that sectarian divides need not lead to conflict. In Iraq, we see the promise of a multi-ethnic, multi-sectarian democracy”.
This is all oratory by the US/EU-NATO capitalism.., is in the systems nature talking for the US/NATO interests yet continues with same policies toward nations in Middle East.., one thing is for sure.., anything and everything that any US president been saying about a Palestinians states for last 20 years or so have turn out to be rhetoric saving the US and EU interests to begin with. The only change here is that Barack Hussein Obama is point out the notion presented by Saudis 5-10 years ago into his speech asking for Israel to go back to 1967 Israeli borders.., in that regard Israel already have rejected the idea.., (see above) which means that there is not going to be any peace no matter what Obama have said or going to say.
Talking about peace between Islamic sects is yet another reelection party line based on Obama doctrine mimicking the Jimmy Carter doctrine.., regarding religious democracy and how to achieve it in Middle East.., but the idea behind democracy no matter how you look at it is not based on religion.., so by US and EU establishing and supporting Muslims Brotherhood is establishing another dictatorial regime which would not work for democracy and Israel will reject to that as well.
Here, Iran and Iraq are example of what kind of ”democracy” that Obama is talking about.., or for that matter Bahrain and other royalty family his protecting., the brutality in murdering and displacing Sunnis or Shiiets or Christianity is a daily happening in Iraq, the brutal Saudis or Bahraini or Iranian regime killing its people, the non existing freedom of speech, the non existing rights of women and whatever is there is only based on religious framed laws; therefore the notion that there will be a peace and democracy later in time is ridicules by itself.
Having said that: democracy is a two way street leading to all other junctions.., limiting it then is going to be a one way street.., therefore, for last 50 years or so is all been talks and no actions from US or EU to force Israel to accept the fact that they cannot go around calling themselves the only democracy in the region while it is Israel who sabotaging the peace and forthcoming of a democratic government of Palestine.., so if Obama wants peace then Israel have to be forced to accept the peace plan accepting what the Palestinians are formed of.., if not then boycott the country rejecting all kind of payment to Israel..,(3billion dollars annually) do as as US and EU have done to Iraq and doing it to other Arab nations boycott Israel.., then and only then you have proven that Obama doctrine is about democracy.., otherwise is just another reelection party line lies as before.

Dan, it seems you're the one with a penchant of selectivity. You don't mention Operation Cast Lead, in which Israel used tanks, American fighter jets and chemical weapons on trapped civilians (trapped in a ghetto much live Warsaw, surrounded by Israeli barbed wire and watch towers, with literally no escape from Israeli barbarism except to be driven into the sea…) and killed more than a thousand civilians. You don't mention the torture of Palestinian children by IDF stormtroopers. You fail to mention the mothers forced to give birth at checkpoints because the proud Jugend of the IDF think it's funny. You fail to mention (unlike Patreus) that Israeli brutality and intransigence are endangering the lives of American troops in the region. The truth is the the current policy in Israel is first and foremost a threat to Israel itself, and to Jews the world over. The racist brutality of the Israeli state is the only force on earth that could set off a global resurgence of anti-semitism. Giraldi is a friend of Israel and the Jewish people for condemning the behavior of the Israel government and urging it to change course before it's too late.

Is there another nation on the face of the earth that would let a foreign leader have the public pulpit in their country? No way. Why Americans are so gd dumb that they tolerate Bibi doing his thing outside the AIPAC meeting is beyound reason. When will America grow up and start calling their own shots on important matters. Legitimate questions. Thank you, Philip Giraldi. The questions/answers should also be addressed to our house and senate members. They are the ones responsible for allowing Israel to get away with their shenigans. The entire world is leery and does not trust the US government…at all. So the pressure builds on the US government. The elected officials are lacking courage to ask the questions. Many countries are building bridges of business and social interations with other countries while the US keeps blundering into wars and play footsie with Israel. Whenever I think of the congress, "utter waste" comes to mind. The game of government conduct, however bad, is not over but, surely, while there is still time to correct itself, the politicians go about the business of protecting their own rumps. I trust you will not mind my sending your questions to my represenatives in congress.

Extremely well said Mr, Giraldi. I have long admired your intellect. And, I look forward to meeting you at the STOP AIPAC conference beginning tomorrow. We need to have a little faith in our President. I never thought he would demand a roll-back to 1967 borders and that happened today. Wouldn't it be so awesome if he pulled an Eisenhower tomorrow and told Netanyahu, "no more US funding, and I'll stop all private US donations to Israel." It worked in the 50s. Israel stood down regarding the Suez Canal. It was the last time a US president stood up to Israel. We can only hope. Netanyahu recently bragged that the US Congress should remain pro-Israel for the next 20 years. Let's please prove him wrong. Support candidates who are not in the pocket of AIPAC. "…because almost 20 years after the Liberty 241 marines were murdered by Hezbollah in Beruit."
You're talking apples and oranges here. 241 Marines were murdered in Beruit because they were in Beruit (And if the MEU commander would've followed Marine Corps doctrine, they wouldn't have been holed up, indefensible, in that high rise hotel…and the gate guards would've had loaded rifles, which they did not.). The USS Liberty was not in Israeli waters when viciously and repeatedly attacked, which included survivors in the water being machine gunned by Israeli patrol boats, and their government has never even done so much to even apologize for the attack…which they insist was just an honest mistake. Talk about chutzpah!! The Liberty atrocity, like the Alamo, should never be forgot. Bibi and his boys be damned to hell!

I have another question. I am curious as to which other organizations in the world that are generally regarded as "terrorist" are regarded by you as true resistance organizations? Can you name any? Just wondering.
