As today is Christmas Eve, it might be useful for those of us who call ourselves Christians to recall the teachings of Jesus Christ regarding humility, charity, tolerance, and peacemaking. The Christian message should be particularly welcome to the American people who have borne the burden of nearly continuous warfare since 2001, resulting in the deaths of more than 5,300 Americans and hundreds of thousands of foreigners at an appalling cost to the US economy. The message is particularly appropriate for Christmas 2009 because it appears that many so-called Christian leaders are urging the United States government to take steps that will inevitably lead to a new war, this time against Iran.
On December 10th a group calling itself the Christian Leaders for a Nuclear-Free Iran sent a letter to both political parties’ leaders in Congress as well as to the chairman and ranking member of the House Foreign Relations committee. The letter, beginning "We write today as Christian leaders," preceded a December 15th vote in the House of Representatives in which 412 house members approved the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act of 2009, with only twelve votes opposed. The sanctions proposed by the House of Representatives and endorsed by the Christian leadership have correctly been seen by many as amounting to an act of war.
The Christian Leaders’ letter was signed by many prominent evangelicals including Christians United For Israel founder John Hagee, Pat Robertson of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Chuck Colson, Gary Bauer of American Values, and Richard Land. Land, who appears to be the driving force behind the letter, is president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. There are also several Catholics among the thirty-seven signatories, which is surprising as the Vatican has repeatedly expressed its repugnance towards the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. One signatory Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, has an interesting moral compass. In defense of the Catholic priests who assaulted young boys he once explained "After all, most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn’t allow themselves to be molested." He has also stated that "Hollywood likes anal sex" and that the film industry is controlled by "secular Jews who hate Christianity." Donohue’s signature might be a bizarre mea culpa for his nasty comments about Jews because it aligns him firmly with AIPAC on the issue of Iran, but it places him in strange company with Hagee, who hates Catholicism and has blamed the Catholic Church for the Holocaust.
The name of the umbrella group, "Nuclear-Free Iran," is particularly ironic as Iran is in fact nuclear-free. But Tehran is directly confronted by 200 Israeli nukes and an undisclosed number of American bombs on board ships and planes in the Persian Gulf. If the Christian leaders’ letter is to be taken at face value, Israeli and American nukes are apparently to be judged, ecclesiastically speaking, by a different standard than those Iran might acquire. The letter also ignored that Iran shares a tough neighborhood with non-threatening but also nuclear armed India and Pakistan and made some questionable claims, starting with the flat assertion that Iran, guided by "extremist leaders," has a nuclear weapons program. It then went on to state that Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, is destabilizing "democratic and Western leaning regimes throughout the Middle East," and it will "sell or give nuclear weapons to extremist groups." The letter claimed that Iran has "vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the earth" and concluded by calling for sanctions on refined petroleum products being sold to Tehran, to include not only the gasoline itself but also the ships transporting it and the banks and insurance companies enabling the transactions. It concluded "We speak out today on behalf of millions of Christians who believe that the interests of peace and security would best be served by our elected representatives sending a powerful signal that this tyrannical Iranian regime shall never threaten the world with nuclear weapons."
I am one Christian who is saddened by the letter because it does nothing good for either the United States or the Iranian people and reflects no moral values that I can relate to. Many of the signatories also supported the US invasion of Iraq, which, inter alia, effectively destroyed the ancient Chaldean Christian community in that tormented land. The "Nuclear Free Iran" letter is also very light on facts. Iran’s government and its policies might not be to our liking, but it is not up to Washington to stage yet another disastrous intervention in a foreign land to bring about regime change. Tehran continues to be a signatory to the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and abides by the International Atomic Energy Agency inspection regime. Like it or not, it has a legal right to enrich uranium for the generation of electricity. While there are legitimate concerns about some aspects of the country’s nuclear agenda, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the existence of a secret weapons program. If Iran does eventually decide to develop a weapon it will quite likely be due to the unrelenting pressure and threats emanating from the United States and Israel. And then there is the claim that a bomb in Iran’s hands would inevitably be given to a terrorist. In the real world, it is highly unlikely that any country would spend large sums of money over many years to develop a secret weapon for deterrence purposes only to turn around and give it away. Also, if the mullahs were to give a nuclear device to a terrorist who could somehow figure out how to transport it and use it, Iran would be obliterated on the following day by the US and Israel. There is no indication that the Iranian government is suicidal.
Contrary to the claim in the letter, Iran’s admittedly fundamentalist and authoritarian leadership is far from extremist in its political ambitions. The country has behaved pragmatically ever since its revolution against the Shah in 1979 and it has not attacked anyone. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been widely and often unfairly criticized in the western and Israeli media, does not have the authority to go to war, unlike our own President Barack Obama. Iran does support Palestinian and Lebanese resistance movements against Israel but none of those groups can be described as international terrorists unless one fully accepts the Israeli definition of terrorist. From Tehran’s point of view, it is the United States, not Iran, that is the principal state sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East through its support of Kurdish, Arab, and Baluchi separatist groups that stage attacks inside Iran.
It is also difficult to discern what the democratic governments in the Middle East that Iran is allegedly undermining might be. If the reference is to Iraq, most observers would agree that in spite of occasional friction Baghdad enjoys an excellent relationship with the Ayatollahs in Tehran, almost certainly a relationship that is closer than it has with Washington. If the reference is to Israel, Iran has no ability to influence developments in that country while the often repeated claim that Tehran would wipe Israel off the map is a deliberate fabrication. Can Iran be undermining Lebanon? It is precisely because Lebanon is a democracy that Hezbollah is so strong. It is supported by many of the Lebanese people because of its resistance to Israel, just as Hamas has been democratically elected in Gaza, an election that many in the United States also would prefer to ignore.
And then there are the sanctions themselves. The so-called Christian Leaders want to put pressure on Iran to make it behave as if punishing innocent people by denying them fuel to heat their homes is a Christian value. And there are two things that they are overlooking. First, the sanctions regime that is now being urged by Congress might have to be enforced by the US Navy to be effective which dramatically raises the likelihood that there would be an incident that could quickly lead to a shooting war, hardly a Christian outcome. Second, the sanctions themselves far exceed "pressuring the regime" to make it change its ways. Forty percent of Iran’s fuel requirements are imported, mostly from the United Arab Emirates, as the country has only limited refining capacity. If successful, sanctions on energy supplies would be devastating. Think for a moment of what would happen to the United States if 40% of its gasoline and oil were to be eliminated from the marketplace. Think what the reaction of the American public would be if the shortages were the result of the hostile action of a foreign country. If the intention of sanctions is to help the so-called "reformers" inside Iran, a claim that is made in the Christian Leaders’ letter, it would ironically have the opposite effect, empowering the hardliners. Most observers rightly note that the sanctions would at a minimum ensure that no negotiations between Iran and the west could be successful. If Iran were to react aggressively to the virtual shut down of its economy, the sanctions would quickly lead to war.
So Richard Land and his friends are on record as supporting US interventionism, opposing elections when the wrong guys win, and using force to impoverish a civilian population in a country that does not threaten the United States in any way. America’s self-described Christian Leaders have again become enablers working with a Congress and media that have become addicted to war. It might be considered churlish to suggest that the Christian mission might better consist of helping the poor and saving souls without the added burden of advising politicians. It is indeed a tragedy when folks who call themselves religious leaders give the American public the usual Hobson’s choice when it comes to dealing with Iran. It is either war or more war. Not a very reassuring message at Christmas time and not exactly the legacy of the Prince of Peace.

This breaks my heart. I'm a newly converted Libertarian, but I have become one from Conservatism due to two things: the anti-war message is inherently Christian (but 'conservative republicans' are not at all), and I believe that you aren't really free unless you are also economically free.
Ever since I've been reading this website and listening to antiwarradio from iTunes I feel like I have the truths underneath the "news". My parents and my in-laws are all conservatives who fully back the wars. But once you start really breaking open the issues with people who really know (Scott Ritter, Goyette, Porter, Ron Paul's interviews on antiwarradio), I have seen them slowly coming around to an anti-war position. And we are all devout Roman Catholics. I'm a Catholic youth minister, too.
The most powerful thing you can do is get Conservatives to understand that an interventionist foreign policy is always an aggressive act, is always done to the impotent nations, costs the US taxpayer an extraordinary amount of money, causes resentment, hatred and ultimately blowback abroad and at home, and causes civil liberties at home to be under attack as well.
Jesus, give us strength to oppose this Empire. You did it before by your grassroots efforts in that manger due to an imperial edict. Set us free from war and warmongers. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God."

At its core, the letter from the self-proclaimed Christian leaders is psychotic. It contains evidence not about Iran but about the twisted minds of its authors. It would make a good exhibit in a course on the role of mental illness in our political system today.

The above mentioned individuals: Hagee, Donahue, Bauer and Land are the Pharasees of the Modern Age. They are the hypocrites, liars and fools that Jesus Christ denounced wherever he went. And it it their seed who conspired to kill the greatest Prophet the ever walked the earth because he spoke the truth. We live in similar times and await his return. These liars will not be very happy to see Him if they recognize Him at all.
Here is the Youtube link for Jesus's Sermon on the Mount from 1961's movie, King of Kings. I think that it is the greatest speech ever made to mankind.

I wish Antiwar a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Whether you believe or do not believe what I have written, you should know that there is a special blessing for those who love the truth and there is no question that you at least try to print the truth at great risk every day. These false prophets are idiots who know nothing about the testimony of Jesus Christ. He will shut them up permanently when the time is right.

A Merry Christmas to you Philip Giraldi & Christians around the world. And what a timely article. This is the kind of message that the world needs today.
Islam reveres Jesus Christ & holy Mary & reaffirms Immaculate Conception. Whole chapters are devoted to them in the Koran. According to Islamic teachings Jesus Christ who was taken up to the Heaven will return & eliminate Anti-Christ (known as Dajjal in Islam ) near the end of days. That is the time when all those who forgot his true message would indeed shut up.
May there be peace on earth & better understanding among the followers of three major religions of the world Christianity,Judaism & Islam which stem from the same source-Amen.

Another outstanding contribution by Philip Giraldi.
As for Catholic spokesman, Bill Donahue, it is somewhat accurate and fair for him to claim that Hollywood is "controlled by secular Jews that hate Christianity". This is controversial? It may be crude and somewhat overreaching, but even Hollywood scholar, Michael Medved, (himself Jewish), has drawn similar conclusions.
Though many Jews proclaim themselves as atheists or even Buddhists, those Jews who convert to Christianity face widespread ostracism by other Jews. Their are Jewish fingerprints all over the de-Christianization of America that's occurred over the past half century. Yes, a great many Jews detest Christianity.

These so-called Christians are truly disgusting. They inveigh against the moral rot that America has endured especially over the last 45 years and at the same time fanatically support the very same people who are significantly responsible for this rot.
Additionally, if these Christians love Israel so much, why don't they pack up their bags, move there and become Jews. They are de facto Jews anyhow. Their Christianity is a false and perverted one. America does not need these people. They are a disgrace and and an abomination.

Both Washington and Eisenhower warned the American people about the baleful influence of an overgrown military establishment. These warnings were not heeded and the American people are now suffering the consequences of that failure. The current economic depression is the most visible consequence of that failure, but the future could hold even worse consequences. I am speaking of the massive inflation that has occured in the United States under Greenspan and Bernanke. Inflation is not rising prices, but rather an increase in the supply of money. The consequences of inflation in the form of a general increase in the price level have not materialized yet. The reason for this is that Bernanke, in the short term, has managed to sterilize the increase in the supply of money by paying banks interest on their excess reserves. Once the banks start lending again the fecal matter is going to hit the fan. Ludwig Von Mises describes the process as follows:

Gomer (above) got it right. Them other fellers, they ain't Christians at all. Personally, though I haven't the hubris to call myself a Christian, I read that book cover to cover several times and many times again through the Gospels. It's down in black and white. Them fellers love (a) money and (b) power. Those things are satanic not Christian. It's in the book. Apparently they don't actually read that book. Apparently they curse that book and recrucify Jesus every day of their rotten phoney lives. Too bad for them. They will rot in hell. That'll give 'em a good long time to think about it.

"The characteristic mark of this phenomenon (the crack up boom or flight to real values) is that the increase in the quantity of money (inflation) causes a fall in the demand for money. The increased supply of money is intensified by the general propensity to restrict cash holdings which it brings about. Eventually a point is reached where the prices at which people would be prepared to part with "real" goods discount to such an extent the expected progress in the fall of purchasing power that nobody has a sufficient amount of cash at hand to pay them. The monetary system breaks down; all transactions in the money concerned cease; a panic makes it purchasing power vanish altogether. People return either to barter or to the use of another kind of money"

The fruits of militarism not only include the needless loss of life and essential liberties being swallowed up by an increasingly powerful government. Its fruits also include the complete debasement of the media of exchange. If you want to know what the future has in store for the people of the United States think Zimbabwe and Weimar Germany. We all owe this bright future to the likes of Petraeus, McChrystal, Greenspan, and Bernanke. An unholy alliance between the Lords of War and the Lords of Finance.

As I have come to expect from Dr. Phil Giraldi, a great but sobering article. A quick look back in history tells those with an open mind that America's wars have largely been based on fabrications.
One example still controversial is what did FDR and the US know about the impending attack on Pearl Harbor? My Great Uncle was Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet prior to Pearl Harbor and was uncerimoniously dumped due to his hectoring FDR that the US was provoking Japan towards war with a top-secret, 8-point plan drafted by Cdr. Wm. McCollum of Naval Intelligence, and that the provocations put the Fleet at Pearl Harbor at great risk. When ignored by FDR, my uncle went to the press, but received scant attention. As a result he was fired and the rest, as they say, is history.

Christianity in its true form as preached by Jesus Christ is a great religion but like in other faiths there are those who distort & pervert the gospel to serve their own political, ideological, economic agenda. The violence we see today is due to these sociopaths.
These are the people who fan the flames of hatred & terrorism. Its time that Christians speak out.

I am a strong Presbyterian Christian and deplore the activities and beliefs of those that signed the letter to the American Congress. If Chirst were to come today, he would sweep these "men of God" out of their lofty churches (temples). He came as a babe to show his love for all mankind. Not just those that agree with us. He came to teach us how to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies. If we can believe that He was truly God Incarnate, then those that preach war and more war have never really listened to His message of peace of love. By the way, believing in an almighty God that chose to come to His created beings in their restricted form to atone for sin and to set the world to rights is not easy to swallow. And to live as he taught us to live is almost impossible.

Christians should lead by example, not sit on their arse's and wait for Jesus to "return."
This does nothing to solve issues that could be solved by "true" active Christians "leading by example."
Passivity when you see your fellow human suffering is an evil thing. Praying for a homeless person does not provide them with shelter.
Lead by example and peace be with you all.

As Eve said above not only Christians but Jews & Muslims should lead by example.
Today is Christmas a day for spreading the message of love & forgiveness. Let God fearing Christians, Jews & Muslims be united against those preachers who are busy spreading hatred to serve their own demonic agenda. Clash of civilizations leading to Armageddon.
There have been reports of this happening in some places in USA, people of the three faiths united today in an effort to spread some joy to the needy.
This could be a beginning if taken up by every community. Merry Christmas to all.

Jesus told the pharisees of his day – men of the religious profession who had prostituted themselves in an uneasy alliance with the powers of the day in a bid to maintain their position, wealth and illusion of control – that they were whitewashed tombs, full of dead men's bones and corruption. They had put themselves in the place of God. These are the man of lawlessness "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." The writers of the mentioned letter said, "We write to you today as Christian leaders…" and "We speak out today on behalf of millions of Christians…" I am a disciple of Christ. These men are NOT my leaders and they do NOT speak on my behalf. I just want that to be clear at the judgment seat!

Who cares what christian leaders say? Being someone who accepts with humility Jesus' sacrifice for me to be a child of God no one can speak on my behalf apart from Jesus Himself. These leaders write because they arrogantly think that they represent christianity. Sorry they don't. It is up to today's so called self -styled folk to apply the test WWJD. Accordingly Jesus would express and act in love and not behave in the politically violent manner of these self-styled arrogants.

Mr. Giraldi, I commend you for writing an excellent article. All that you said is true. The so-called Christians you name in your article are, at best, false leaders and teachers. At worst, they are outright frauds, liars and accessories to murder. They have led millions astray from the true teachings and commandments of the Lord Christ Jesus. This is the essence of what the Lord Christ Jesus commanded all of His followers (all professing Christians) to obey: “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength;” “love your neighbor as you love yourself;” blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled;” “blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy;” and, “blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.” The so-called Christians that you name in your article obviously do not love God the Father because they do not obey the clear commandments of His Son Christ Jesus. In fact, they love the devil (or Satan) whom the Lord Christ Jesus called; “the father of lies.” This is what the Lord Christ Jesus said to those who are children of the devil: “why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murder from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! If I am telling the truth why don’t you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is because you do not belong to God.” Mr Giraldi, the so-called Christians you name in your article do not hear God and, therefore, they do not belong to Him. Mr. Giraldi, pray for them; for they are among the wretched souls that are nearest hell.

Great posts! Yes, Keynesianism and the FED, two monstrous ideas that were hatched in the bowels of hell itself, financed the rise of our enormously wasteful American military empire that has brought the American people to the very brink of bankruptcy. Mises, the great Austrian economist, was right; Keynes was wrong. We are now reaping the bitter fruit of decades of flawed economic theory (Keynesianism), a morally corrupt and downright evil banking system known as the FED, and a military-industrial-corporate complex that feeds on the American people people like an enormous blood-sucking vampire. Jesus loves nukes. You can read about it in the Bible…… It's somewhere in there, I'm sure. I'm going to start a new arm band fad in lieu of this. WWJD- Nuke 'em.
Seriously though. I'm getting tired of "Christians" using the Bible as an excuse for their unstable psychology. These people are seriously crazy. This only strengthens the validity of my idea that the anti-Christ is no one other than the modern church. He comes in the name of God, performs miracles in the name of God and misleads people. Hmmm……. Does the Church not do that? Do a lot of churches not use the excuse that "God is coming back soon, go ahead and use up all the oil. Pollute as much as you want."
Excuse me but, last I checked that is gluttony. Also, last I checked gluttony is a SIN. These people, for lack of a better word, are ignorant. They leave it up to someone else to "interpret" God's word and yet, they never read it themselves. It's right there, translated into English (for the most part). Read it every once in a while.

[The bird-brained HELLywood shmucks affect even our Kansas birds - the HELLywoodized ones with their blaring boombox "mating calls" which scare our little feathered ones. So I am sharing this with all non-shmucks. Karl]
Our songbirds here in MitcHELL County, Kansas want
to give the following update on the insane boombox noise here:
"The noisiest kid over in the city of Beloink drives an older white sedan with license number 178-BJW. Our owner's friends in Beloink have told the police about him several times, but it never dawns on the Keystone Kops there that they could use an unmarked car to verify the noise; the kids have cell phones and can warn their friends when they see a marked patrol car coming.
"And it never dawns on the anti-social psychopaths (who may be making up for the lack of noisy rattles in their infancy) that their unlawful noise may be harming a sick baby or someone whose night job forces him to sleep days – or even some veteran who can get "flashbacks" of battlefield cannon booms!
"It's obvious that many Kansas kids are no longer Christians, or patriotic Americans, or even human because they have been slowly brainwashed and mentally enslaved by leftist, anti-family, perverted, unAmerican, Jesus-bashing, Marxist shlemiels and shmucks in HELLywood who exercise their first amendment rights by dangling every known vice before Kansas farm kids while secretly viewing them as red-state "hicks"! After America falls we'll be able to blame the buyers of HELLywood's videos and devil music as much as the HELLywood devils themselves!
"If you think such music doesn't create devils, why do little piggy Beloinkers blast quiet neighborhoods even on Sunday mornings during church time? Do those paranoids really think everyone is out to get them and they have to have growling tailpipes for the same reason a dog growls? Since we don't get to democratically vote whether we want to hear their music or any music, will those "dictators" be happy when God responds in kind by letting America be taken over by a big dictator who will likely ban all "dirty capitalist" noise! Until then, maybe a tornado – or even a nuclear war – will cover up at least some of the noise!
"Many other places (like Albuquerque and Reno) have huge fines for boombox noise and even impound offending cars! How can high-crime, gambling towns have better "Kansas values" than a north central Kansas town?
"Have the little piggies here heard of headphones? We don't care if they're smoking pot and fornicating in the middle of our road at 3 a.m. as long as they're quiet! North Bell St. over in Beloink is the noisiest place in the county. Would the BELLies care if one of our friends is a veteran a block east of them who might go postal over the noise? As long as the cops do nothing about this, we songbirds will keep singing to the whole world about MitcHELL County!"
See what smart birds we have?
