At least 71 Iraqis were killed or found dead today and another 79 Iraqis were injured. Attacks were scattered around the country but Baghdad, Baquba, Mosul and Iskandariya took the brunt of the violence. Also, the Department of Defense announced that a Marine died in combat in Anbar Province on Saturday.
Iraqi soldiers reported killing six suspects over the last 24 hours in different parts of the country and capturing a senior al-Qaeda leader near Abu Ghraib. Also, 430 anti-tank mines were discovered in Jamila. U.S. troops shot and killed a civilian in the Shoala district of Baghdad. Coalition forces reported killing five suspects and arresting 22 others over the past week.
In Baghdad, a rocket landed in the Green Zone and rocked the U.S. embassy, wounding three people. Near the Shorja marketplace in central Baghdad, a suicide car bomber killed two people and injured five others. A man was killed and three others injured during a mortar attack in Doura. In the Zaafaraniya neighborhood, a roadside bomb killed a policeman and wounded three others. A separate roadside bomb injured two people in al-Shorta al Rabi’aa. A Katyusha rocket injured four members of one family in the Karrada area. In the Um al-Ma-alif neighborhood a sniper killed a police commando and injured two more. Four soldiers were injured by a roadside bomb in the Doura neighborhood. A roadside bomb killed a civilian in Saidiya. Also, 17 dumped bodies were found in several neighborhodds. In Bayaa, a police officer was killed and two more wounded in clashes with gunmen.
In Mosul, gunmen shot and killed tribe leader Mohammed al-Igoud and wounded his son. A police major and a Facilities Protection captain were gunned down in separate events. A body bearing gunshot wounds was discovered today and a decapitated body was found yesterday. A gunman and a civilian were killed in separate incidents.
Iskandariya is under curfew following clashes; at least one civilian was killed and three others wounded. Mortars also fell on a residential area where they killed at least five people and wounded 11 others.
Clashes in Baquba left three gunmen dead and five civilians injured. Five more people were injured when a bomb exploded near their home, and three policemen were wounded during a car bomb attack at their checkpoint.
Police raided a home in Tal Afar where they shot a man wearing an explosive vest, which then detonated, killing the man and wounding another person.
In Fallujah, gunmen killed a civilian and injured two others. A bomb destroyed an Iraqi army vehicle. Also, the bodies of two women and a 14-year-old boy were found.
An Iraqi contractor working for U.S. forces was shot dead in his driveway near Kut.
A body bearing gunshots and torture marks was found in Diwaniya.
Three gunmen were killed and four policemen were injured during clashes near the western gate to Samarra.
A roadside bomb killed a police officer and injured three other policemen in Tikrit. Three bodies were found.
Two bodies were found south of Tikrit at Tal Gseba village.
A policeman was wounded during a roadside bomb blast in Kirkuk.
In Hawija, a gunman was killed and his associate injured while trying to plant a bomb near a police employee’s house.
Gunmen injured two people in downtown Diyala.
Gunmen started an oil pipeline fire near Kirkuk.
Seven Iraqi troops were injured during a bombing at their Hilla area checkpoint.
British positions in Basra came under attack.
A bomb at a mosque in Mahaweel caused no injuries.
In Haswa, a bomb-laden corpse wounded two Iraqi soldiers when it exploded.
