Today the violence was marked by a number of smaller incidents and several kidnappings. At least 111 Iraqis were killed or found dead, 86 injured and 12 kidnapped. Also, a U.S. helicopter experienced a hard landing during a routine flight that did not involve combat. Eighteen aboard were injured, including nine that immediately returned to duty. The deaths of another three American soldiers were reported today as well, but they have been added to yesterday’s tally.
Iraqi soldiers with help from Coalition forces freed 23 kidnap victims in western Baghdad; one suspected kidnapper was killed and two more were wounded. Coalition forces also supported an Iraqi national police training team when they came under heavy fire in Baghdad; no casualities were reported.
Car and roadside bombs were plentiful in the capital today: Near Mustasiriyah University, a roadside bomb wounded seven people. A car bomb in the Mahmoun University parking lot killed two and wounded four, including two policemen. On Palestine Street, a roadside bomb killed one and wounded six others. Another roadside bomb killed a man in the Shorja area. In the Iskan district, a car bomb exploded, killing two civilians and wounding three others. A roadside bomb injured four civilians in the ameiryah pool.
Also in Baghdad, a policeman was killed and five others wounded during an attack by a suicide car bomber near their base in the Doura district. Mortars also struck a Doura restaurant, killing five and wounding seven. A civilian was shot dead in the Fadhel neighborhood. Mortars fell on the Abu Chir neighborhood, killing four and wounding 11 others. Another mortar killed two and injured eight in the Azamiyah district. And in a daylight bank robbery, gunmen in Iraqi army uniforms kidnapped four guards and stole $1 million in cash. Sixty bodies were discovered in various locations throughout the city.
A pregnant woman and three of her children were killed in Salaja.
Two people were killed and six others injured, including two children, when gunmen attacked a minibus near Muqdadiyah.
In separate incidents, four brothers in a car and a policeman were gunned down in Mosul.
Three family members were killed and three wounded during a drive-by shooting near Baquba. West of the city, two policemen were gunned down.
Four people were shot dead at a Khalis vegetable market.
Near Tuz Khormato, six family members were killed and the father injured when gunmen stormed their home.
Eight farmers were abducted from a minibus in Dujail.
Four civilians were injured by a mortar round in Taji.
In Balad a man was gunned down at a railway station.
A suicide car bomber exploded his cargo in front of police Brigadier General Aras Namuq al-Kak’s Kirkuk home. He and 14 others were wounded.
And in Latifiya, a suspicious explosion set an oil facility ablaze. No casualties were reported.
