About two million Shi’ite pilgrims are in Karbala for the climax of Ashuraa rituals. Heavy security, including the arrests of three female bombers, has so far prevented any large-scale violence today, but attackers targeting pilgrims in other parts of the country were more successful. At least 14 Iraqis were killed and 17 more were wounded.

Meanwhile, unapologetic Iraqi officials seem recklessly nonchalant about the increasing defections of Sunni Awakening Council members back to al-Qaeda groups. Also, Iraqiya leader, Ayad Allawi, continues to warn the West of Iran’s meddling in Iraq.

The formation of the new government came across a new roadblock, this one over the failure of two large Shi’ite groups to compromise on the selection of the next prime minister. This new delay could mean further destabilization of Iraq’s fragile security gains. At least 24 Iraqis were killed and 33 more were wounded in attacks that targeted security personnel. Also, Gen. David Petraeus, who once commanded American forces in Iraq, is now in charge of operations in Afghanistan.
U.S. President Joe Biden met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to discuss pre-election tensions. Elsewhere, al least five Iraqis were killed and six more were wounded in light violence. Some attacks occurred yesterday but were left unreported until today.

At least four Iraqis were killed and 18 more were wounded in a light day of violence. A U.S. Marine was killed in combat in Anbar province. So far, no outright attacks against Shi’ite pilgrims have been reported; however, a blast in Numaniya reminded pilgrims to stay alert to trouble as they head home from Baghdad.

At least 14 Iraqis were killed and 69 more were wounded on what would have been a quiet day if not for a bombing in Ramadi. The bombing and an unrelated arrest in another Anbar city may signal that the quiet province could once again see regular violence from Sunni militias.

What appears to be a series of targeted assassinations continues in Baghdad with attacks on Sunni Endowment members and newspaper employees. Awakening Council (Sahwa) fighters also saw attacks on them elsewhere. Overall, at least eight Iraqis were killed and 14 more were wounded. One U.S. soldier was killed in combat today, and more background information on U.S. soldiers killed in a fragging incident on Monday was released.

At least one Iraqi was killed and 10 more were wounded in the latest attacks. No Coalition deaths were reported, but stunning testimony was given in the trial of a U.S. soldier accused of murdering two fellow Americans. Also, the Iraqi government reiterated their promise to fold Awakening Council members into mainstream security forces or otherwise find them employment.
