Twelve new military deaths and at least 72 Iraqi deaths were reported Tuesday and overnight Monday. There were at least 85 reported injuries in various incidents as well. The International Organization for Migration released figures on the number of displaced Iraqis. They reported an estimated 190,000 have been displaced since February, with approximately 9000 Iraqis fleeing their homes each week. Al-Jazeera is reporting that several bodies from a group of fourteen men who were kidnapped yesterday from a computer store have been found but did not release an exact number. (None of these deaths is included in the above totals.)
The U.S. military announced that insurgents killed eight American soldiers on Monday and one died on Sunday. Those who died on Monday were all killed in or near Baghdad: Four were killed by a roadside bomb; the others died in separate, small-fire events. On Sunday, an Army soldier was killed by a roadside bomb.
The military also announced that two more Marines died over the weekend from wounds they received during fighting in al-AnBar province. (Bringing the total to, at least, three Marine, two National Guard deaths over the weekend; three of which were previously reported.) A spokesperson for a National Guard support group also announced that three soldiers were wounded recently near Fallujah.
Today, the Navy announced that on Sept. 29 a Navy Seal died during “combat operations against enemy forces” in Ramadi. Two other members of the team were wounded.
Several deaths occurred in separate incidents in and around Baqouba. The bodies of seven Shi’ite family members were discovered by police in the Abu Seida area. Elsewhere in Baqouba, Iraqi police killed four gunmen in a morning clash. Also, five members of a Shi’ite family trying to flee the Gatoun area were killed. The hospital in Baquoba reported they received the bodies of eight other fatal-shooting victims and two who had succumbed to a roadside bomb.
In Muqdadiyah, gunmen entered a home and killed one while injuring three others.
Morters fells on Mahmoudiya, killing one and injuring five.
In Mosul, a state TV employee and two pedestrians were killed in a drive-by shootings.
Two women were found dead in Kut. One was beheaded, the other burned.
In Kirkuk, three bodies were found.
Unidentified gunmen killed Naeem Manei, an assistant judge, in Hay.
Police also found the body of Col Adnan Hussein al Hreshawi, an officer in Hussein’s army. He was cuffed and shot several times.
A total of 17 people are also reported dead in various attacks around the country.
A number of incidents also happened in Baghdad. A suicide bomber killed three and wounded nineteen at a fish market in Baghdad. In the Dora neighborhood, a mortar attack killed one, injured 17. In another Baghdad neighborhood, a mortar attack killed seven and injured 25. A rocket attack also killed one and injured two others in northern Baghdad. Two more civilians were injured in a roadside bomb attack targeting U.S. soldiers, and a car bomb near a Shi’ite mosque killed three and injured nine people.
