U.S. Admiral Mike Mullen said that the United States remains on track to withdraw 50,000 troops from Iraq in August; however, the political situation will be watched until then. At least two Iraqis were killed and 10 more were wounded in the latest violence, which included an attack on Kurdish rebels launched from Iranian soil.
Iranian artillery rained for hours on northern parts of Iraq, leaving one 14-year-old girl dead in Choman. At least one other person was wounded. Iran occasionally fires upon suspected Party of a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) rebels hiding in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq. The PJAK are an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that focuses on Iranian Kurdistan.
In Mosul, a bomb targeting an army colonel’s motorcade wounded four guards. An attack on a northern checkpoint left one civilian dead and three more wounded. In the west, a civilian and a child were wounded during an attack at another checkpoint.
Two civilians were abducted in Qaim.
Four suspects were arrested near Amara.
