Monday: 2 GIs, 78 Iraqis Killed; 45 Iraqis Wounded

As U.S. President Bush and top advisors sneaked into Iraqi for meetings in Anbar province, 78 Iraqis were killed and another 45 were wounded in attacks. Two U.S. servicemembers were killed and three were wounded in separate events. Meanwhile, the worry now is that growing tensions between rival Shi’ite groups might further undermine the security situation in Iraq.

One U.S. servicemember was killed and three more were wounded during a roadside bombing in Baghdad yesterday. The DOD reported that a soldier was killed in a non-hostile incident on Aug. 29 in Taji.

In Baghdad, 15 unidentified bodies were found scattered in several neighborhoods. A car bomb killed two people and wounded three more in the al-Allawi neighborhood. A tow-truck bomb in Zaafaraniyah killed one and wounded five more. Roadside bombs in Bayaa and Baladiyat targeted U.S. patrols, but no casualties were reported. Four residents were injured during a mortar attack in Abu Dsheer. In al-Qanat, mortars wounded two policemen.

In Dujail, clashes broke out between suspected al-Qaeda and local residents; one militant was killed and four were wounded. In a separate incident, a roadside bomb killed a boy and wounded three brothers.

A suicide bomber near a Ramadi police checkpoint killed two policemen and wounded 13 others, including seven civilians.

A pair of separate roadside bombs wounded four civilians and two policemen in Kirkuk. Another roadside bomb targeted a police vehicle, but no casualties were reported.

Two bodies were found in Mussayab.

In the Garma area, U.S. forces killed 32 al-Qaeda suspects and arrested 55 more during raids over the course of the last three days.

Gunmen attacked an al-Saqlawiyah police station. U.S. forced drove them back, killing five gunmen, including one wearing a suicide vest.

Eleven people were kidnapped at a fake checkpoint near Khalis. Also, no casualties were reported in the al-Salam neighborhood during mortar shelling.

Iraqi and Coalition forces killed 13 gunmen during an operation in al-Wishah.

In Hawija, a roadside bomb wounded one policeman last night.

A roadside bomb injured a truck driver and damaged his vehicle last night in Mosul. Also, a cameraman working for al-Mosuliya TV was gunned down late Monday.

A civilian was shot and killed near al-Ouon village.

Near the Baiji mayor’s office, gunmen killed one policeman and wounded a second.

Two policemen were injured during a roadside bombing in Fallujah.
