At least 210 Iraqis were killed or found dead today and another 418 wounded, mostly in a series of bombing in the capital and Kirkuk. Also, five American soldiers died in separate incidents.
The U.S. military reported on the deaths of three more American servicemembers. Two U.S. soldiers were killed during combat in Anbar province, another soldier died while on recuperative leave. Later, the deaths of two more soldiers were reported; they died in Baghdad on Friday. An U.S. vehicle was blasted in Khalis, no casualties were reported.
In Baghdad, a suicide truck bomber killed at least 135 people and injured 305 others in an attack on the Sadriyah market in central Baghdad; the bombing occurred late in the afternoon as crowds had gathered to buy food for their evening meals. It is the single deadliest attack since the 2003 wasr began. A minibus struck a roadside bomb near Beirut Square, killing one and wounding four. Also, a bomb in a southern neighborhood killed one and wounded ten. Following the attack, mortar rounds were exchanged between Sunni and Shi’ite neighborhoods; two were killed and 20 injured in the barrages. And 19 dumped bodies were discovered in various neighborhoods.
In Kirkuk a series of eight bombings rocked the city during a two-hour period, killing three and wounding 43 others. A suicide car bomber targeted the offices of Kurdish Democratic Party of Massoud Barzani; two people were killed and 30 wounded in the incident. No casualties were reported at a second bombing which took place at a girls’ school closed for the weekend. Eight people were wounded at a bombing at a petrol station. Two roadside bombs targeting police patrols went off in a northern neighborhood, killing at least two more. Another car bomb then wounded five people in a southern district. A curfew is in effect.
Four policemen were killed and a fifth wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Samarra; three of the gunmen were killed and one was wounded. In a separate incident in town, three officers were wounded when a car bomb blasted them.
In Mahmudiya, eight people was killed and 12 wounded during a bombing at a marketplace.
Five dumped bodies were discovered in Fallujah. U.S. forces killed three gunmen during a "search campaign." Clashes broke out elsewhere, but no casualties were reported.
A curfew is in effect in Mosul following a clash between Iraqi security forces and militia members. Two Iraqi soldiers and three civilians were killed in separate incidents. Five gunmen were also reported killed. Three people were injured when a car bomb targeted an ambulance.
Gunmen shot dead a police officer in Duluiya.
One body bearing gunshot wounds to the head was found in Iskandariya.
A lawyer known for defending militants, Jaishi al-Ameer, was shot dead in Kut.
In Baiji, a convoy of gunmen carrying banners declaring the establishment of an "Islamic state" terrified the mostly Sunni town.
At least eight people were killed in Hit when a suicide bomber detonated his cargo; the number of wounded was not released.
Gunmen attacked a Khalis checkpoint and injured three policemen.
In Narhavan, three people were killed and 12 wounded during a mortar attack.
