A day after a major bombing in Baghdad, violence rages on. Overall, 100 Iraqis were reported killed or found dead and another 56 were wounded in attacks around the country. Also, five more American servicemembers were killed in separate incidents on Sunday and Monday, and a civilian security helicopter crashed in central Baghdad.
A helicopter belonging to Blackwater Security Company crashed in central Baghdad near the al Shorja market. All four on board were killed. A fifth person in a second helicopter was shot to death. Authorities are unsure as to what caused the crash but are reporting that at least four of them had gunshot wounds to the head. They had been monitoring an official convoy traveling through the streets of Baghdad when they crashed.
The U.S military reported on the deaths of five more servicemembers. One Marine died from wounds sustained during an operation south of Baghdad on Sunday. Two more Marines were killed in separate incidents in Anbar, also on Sunday. On Monday, a soldier was killed in combat in Anbar province, and a roadside bomb blasted an MP to death north of Baghdad.
In Basra, military spokesmen reported that Katyusha rockets injured two British soldiers at a base in central Basra. Also, five British soldiers and two Iraqis were wounded in a car accident.
U.S. forces killed 16 suspected militia members and detained 10 others during operation in Haditha and Baghdad. Iraqi army troops reported killing eight suspected militiamen and arresting 37 others in several locations.
In Baghdad, 27 dumped bodies were recovered. A car bomb killed two people and wounded ten in the Sadriya district. In central Baghdad, a car bomb killed one person and injured four near a petrol station. Four people were killed and seven wounded during a car bomb blast in the Karrada district. A roadside bomb injured three officers while they were patrolling al Baladiyat, and another bomb in Azamiyah wounded a child. A bomb left in a bag at the welfare office injured six people. Also, gunmen killed Mustansiriya University economics professor and television host, Dr. Diya al-Meqoter.
A roadside bomb near Baiji blasted a minibus carrying workers; the number of casualties is unspecified.
Three Iraqi soldiers were wounded by a car bomb blast near Sinjar.
In Mosul, nine people were wounded when a suicide car bomber rammed the Kurdistan Youth Center. Iraqi security forces and militia members clashed in several locations in the city; five policemen were killed and three more wounded. Five militia members were also killed. In a separate clash in nearby al Thawra, another police officer was killed and four others wounded. A roadside bomb killed another officer and wounded two others.
Gunmen killed two teachers in Tal Afar.
Police found a bullet-riddled body near an unexploded car bomb in Mussayab; the car bomb was dismantled. A contractor and another man were killed late yesterday.
A mortar round landed on a residential district in Iskandariya; a woman was killed and two children were wounded. A body was also found.
During a drive-by shooting near Kirkuk and on the highway to Haditha, gunmen killed two people and wounded a third person.
South of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb injured 10 civilians, including a woman and child.
In Suwayra, mortars landed on a residential district; five members of a Shiite family and another person were killed and nine people were wounded. Also, a body was fished out of the Tigris River.
Clashes erupted between militia and police in Latifiya on Monday. Two militia members were killed. A police officer and a child were wounded. Also, the police freed a number of Shiite families being held by the militia.
On a highway near Rutba, not far from the Syrian border, four bodies were discovered. They appeared to have been tortured and shot.
In Haqil Sabba, a man was killed by an improvised explosive device.
And in Fallujah, gunmen killed three butchers in their shop, and a sniper killed two Iraqi soldiers.
