A second day of increased violence followed the executions of Saddam’s half-brother and the former head of Iraq’s Revolutionary Court. At least 238 Iraqis were killed or found dead today and 118 were injured. The U.S. military also reported on the deaths of two American soldiers; one GI was wounded in a separate incident. Three British soldiers were wounded in Basra. Also killed were an American, a Hungarian and a Croatian working for a U.S. aid group. Two more foreigners were killed in Biji.
Two U.S. soldiers were killed in Anbar Province in separate incidents; one died Wednesday and one died on Monday. Also, an American soldier was wounded by sniper fire in Tikrit, and mortars fell on the American Base in Balad, but no injuries were reported there.
Three British soldiers were wounded in separate incidents around Basra. British patrols also killed three militants in separate clashes in the city. Rockets rained down on a pair of British installations, but no injuries were reported.
The state-run Iraqiya channel reported that at least 100 militia members were killed during clashes with Iraqi troops near Balad Ruz Wednesday.
In Baghdad, 31 unidentified bodies were found dumped throughout the city. At the al Hay market, a car bomb explosion killed 17 and injured 33 more. Four people were killed and 11 wounded when a bomb was set off near the offices of Shi’ite leader Moqtada al Sadr. A roadside bomb at Tayaran Square killed a policeman working for the ministry of electricity and wounded three others. Another roadside bomb, this one in Doura, wounded six people. Also, mortars fell and clashes took place on Haifa Street, but no casualties were reported.
A convoy belonging to the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs was attacked in Baghdad; an American staffer and three security people were killed. The security personnel were Hungarian, Croatian and Iraqi. Two more people were injured.
Also in the capital, a professor at Baghdad University was killed. The leader of the Mansour municipality, Mohannad Ammanoiel, was kidnapped, and four of his guards were killed; the incident took place in the al Hamra neighborhood. Gunmen killed a former Baath Party member in the Zafaraniya neighborhood. Five people were kidnapped in in Bayaa. Also, clashes between Iraqi army and militants took place in the Yarmouk neighborhood; an Iraqi soldier and four civilians were killed.
In Kirkuk, ten people were killed and 42 injured in a suicide truck bombing near the al Quriya police station. Coalition forces killed two militants.
Two foreign security workers were injured by a roadside bomb in Biji.
In Muqdadiya, seven Iraqis were killed and 10 wounded when American helicopters arrived to support Iraqi troops.
Five people were killed and an unknown number injured when U.S. soldiers opened fire during clashes with gunmen in Hit. A mother and daughter were among the dead.
In Mosul, ten unidentified bodies were delivered to the morgue.
The body of a policeman who had been strangled was found in Iskandariya. Mortars fell on a residential district, killing a woman and her son; ten others were wounded.
Gunmen attacked two brothers; one was killed, the other injured.
Twenty-eight bodies belong to members of the Shimari tribe were found in Baquba.
And an engineer was kidnapped Basra.
