Myths of Our Time
It is conventional wisdom that it was the draft that ended the Vietnam war. According to this explanation, cowardly college students subject to the draft and their unpatriotic families, forced an end to the war. This is Karl Marx’s explanation. Material interests, not empty morality, are said to have brought the war to an end.
The fact that in those days the US still had an independent media of sorts that sometimes framed the war in moral terms is ignored. Are we sure, for example, that the film of the naked little girl running in terror down the road burning with napalm was ineffectual in arousing moral opposition to the war? Are we certain that it wasn’t an aroused moral conscience that brought about the end of the war but was college students’ fears for their lives and limbs?
If we ascribe ending the war to material interests, it makes ending the war look as unworthy as the war itself.
Yet, virtually every conservative columnist, commentator, newsperson and politician, as well as today’s antiwar protesters and apparently the Pentagon, believes that a military draft would reduce Americans’ toleration for wars because of body bags coming home to middle and upper class parents. Apparently, the lower class doesn’t mind its kids coming back in body bags.
Those in thrall to this explanation, which derives from Marx’s materialist explanation of history, do not notice that Vietnam was our longest war. It apparently took almost forever for the material interest of students and their parents to realize itself and stop the war.
Why are we afraid to say that the war stopped because American troops and the American population got tired, offended even, from killing women, children and noncombatants? Vietnam had not attacked the US. The US had interjected itself into a civil war in a far off place, as it has done in Afghanistan.
By invading Iraq the US started a civil war between Sunni and Shi’ite. In Pakistan the US has started a civil war between the religious tribal population and the secular US puppet state. In Palestine the US started a civil war between Fatah and Hamas.
One continuously reads from those Americans opposed to America’s wars of aggression that the wars are possible because they don’t affect Americans, just those few who sign up for the voluntary military. Thus, there are insufficient material interests at stake to stop the war. This is a common explanation for the weakness of the antiwar movement.
One could argue instead that it is the triumph of Karl Marx’s materialist thinking that has made moral protests impotent. What is morality? You can’t weigh it, define it, measure it. It can be dismissed as the whining of material interests. In contrast, material interests, such as lives, limbs, and bank accounts are real.
For whatever the reason, morality has shown itself to be an impotent force in 21st century America. Americans show no remorse at over one million dead Iraqis and four million displaced Iraqis due entirely to an American invasion based on lies and deception. The lies and deception are now well proven. Yet, there has been no apology for the horrors that Americans inflicted on Iraq.
Afghanistan is another example. Intentional lies conflated the Taliban with al-Qaeda and "terrorists." The diverse peoples in Afghanistan who were first ravaged by Soviet bombs are now ravaged by American bombs. Weddings, funerals, children’s soccer games, people waiting for fuel or food, people asleep in their homes, people attending mosques have all been murdered and are murdered routinely by US and its NATO puppets.
Each time civilians are murdered, the US denies it, only to be contradicted every time by the evidence.
Why is the president of the United States contemplating sending yet tens of thousands more US troops to kill people in Afghanistan?
The answer is that the United States is an immoral country, with an immoral people and an immoral government. Americans no longer have a moral conscience. They have gone over to the Dark Side.
Humanity has endeavored for millennia to control evil with morality. In the American "superpower," this effort has collapsed and failed.
The United States needs to be censured for its immoral behavior, not have that behavior rationalized as being in its material interests.

I understood something else from Karl Marx theories.Indeed he spoke about the material interests which determine the policy of a state, its wars and its motives for wars, but such he described the policy of capitalist states in which the money is the real God.
You wrote:"The answer is that the United States is an immoral country, with an immoral people and an immoral government. Americans no longer have a moral conscience. They have gone over to the Dark Side."This is true ,she is such immoral so she can make wars not even for the large interests of herself but for the interests of an other country and the little groups connected with it:lobbies, politicians, military industry. Therefore a first step to return to morality will be to stop the wars against her interests .

Paul Craig Roberts comments: "The answer is that the United States is an immoral country, with an immoral people and an immoral government. Americans no longer have a moral conscience, which I feel is true but somewhat understates the reality.
The business of america os war – is, has been and always will be.
Until the world brings the governments of israel and america before the International Court, NOTHING will change.

PCR you write what I have been feeling for some time. America has become a paranoid, violent, ignorant country lacking in compassion and self-reflection. If we really looked in the mirror we would get down on our knees and weep and beg forgiveness. We have become the Nazis (only without the snappy uniforms and swastika).

Interesting reference to the "dark side." In his desperation to save his wife, Anakin Skywalker became that which he had sworn to oppose and ultimately caused the calamity he was trying to avert. By the same token, the US has become an outlaw state as a result of its campaign to end outlawry.
After ~20 years Anakin turned from the dark side and was redeemed, but at the cost of billions of lives (including his own). One wonders how long it will take — and how many millions more will have to die — before the US does the same. IMHO it will happen only after the empire has collapsed and broken apart, which should be in the next year or two.

I've said it a thousand times before, so here it is for time one thousand and one:
Amerika will NEVER lose its appetite for war and violence until the majority of the Amerikan sheeple get a taste of what they've been dishing out to people on other parts of the planet for the last seven decades. Until Amerikans have suffered multiple Dresdens, Hiroshimas, My Lais, and Fallujahs, they will continue to believe in the myth of their own exceptionalism, continue with their murderous rogue behavior, and continue to earn the rest of the world's enmity. Heaven help us once the dollar collapses (and the Red, White, and Blue Empire along with it) and the rest of the world decides to give us the comeuppance that we've so richly earned.

PCR is good in pointing out mistruths…..but does not mention(am sure he is aware) of the globalism behind the "conflict" and why it happened.
The scheme for 1 world government has followed a regional approach….you cant merge dissimilar governments and economic systems – so…each region got to enjoy the Hegelian dialectic of thesis antithesis synthesis.
Asia – getting us into WW2 vs the Yellow Horde…and following the deliberatetly drawn out island hopping and barbaric firebombing and Atomic Bombiing of Japan created a vacuum and needed enemy….to justify global political, military, and financial intrigue to further the aims of the 1 Worlders. The United Nations…set up NOT as a World Government but, as a cocreator of it John Foster Dulles said in his 1950 book War or Peace- a "necessary precursor to an eventual world government" allowed regional entities to foster the drive to interdependence and international controls. ASEAN was set up for Asia…..The buildup in Vietnam was under the aegis of the UN..as ASEAN was an Article 51 Treaty which put the UN Security Council control of military issues under it. The Tonkin Gulf falseflag…the buildup…the held back US troops…the bloody civilian deaths and bombings…and the Peace of 72 and the withdrawal…all fostering the eventual Communist control of the area…and furthering the march to regional governments and the goal of Babylon er 1 World Government.
All marching in tune with the rest of the world…NATO in Europe….and now the impending merger of socialist American and socialist Canada and socialist Mexico….towards the goal of the megalomaniacs, socialists and international banksters(sorry for redundancy) of centuries.
Dr Roberts however is a great herald and analyzer of what is happening. I hope he keeps writing..tx to AWC for using his work to help oppose the militarism of our country and society.

Major Hasan is being charged with pre-meditated murder.
Is the federal government, and the individual soldiers who carry out the orders, guilty of anything less than pre-meditated murder?
Indeed, VP Biden openly said in opposition to McCrystals plan that we should instead send special forces around to kill insurgent leaders. He also said we should send the [evil] drones in to kill insurgents.
Despicable.

I believe that we "lost" the Vietnam War because we actually lost it. I remember that in Dec 1972, we quit bombing North Vietnam not because of any humanitarian gesture on the part of Nixon/Kissinger but because the North Vietnamese had learned how to knock our B52s out of the sky. In a critical week prior to the bombing halt, I remember as a young engineer working at Eglin AFB, how all of the electronic countermeasures experts were running around like headless chicken because all of a sudden we were losing like a B52 per day. All of our electronic jamming stuff was not being effective. Not being able to safely conduct war from 20,000 feet anymore put a real damper on those seeking "honor in victory", so we faked a victory and bugged out.

Good point. America is the world's bully and only understands force. Bullies will push everyone's buttons till finally they get slapped upside the head. We are asking for it, and frankly, it wouldn't hurt us to be put in our place. I guess the civilized Western world is too afraid of America so it's up to Afghan tribesmen to teach us a lesson.

Great essay. What has been missing for years in the public's discussion of America's behavior is the moral aspect- America's immorality and inhumanity. The most developed country in the world that is at once the most corrupt and morally bankrupt country on earth. The irony of it all is that America commits atrocities in the name of destroying evil. Plenty of people see America as the new Jerusalem (ha!) and so it has a duty to kill, maim, and destroy.
Here's America's morality: Money=goodness. Whoever has money is morally good by virtue of having money- regardless of how that money was obtained. Any action by one who has money is a good action by virtue of his goodness (money). Hence, we, as the a rich country can do no wrong. A nice materialistic morality. You can measure morality: how much are you/is your portfolio worth?

Economic collapse is the only thing that will force the USA to call off the dogs. Interestingly, it would probably cause the govt. to sick the dogs on the US citizenry in the way of martial law in an effort to maintain what power it had left.
PCR appears as depressed as I am about the state of the US and it's people. While we still have some who are well meaning, too many have crossed over to the Dark Side and we will ultimately pay the price. Then we will rebuild and do it all over again.

Amen Rick.
My parents "devout" Catholics worship my sister because she's rich (although who knows how much of that is fake wealth? I think that she's way overextended) and look down on me because I've devoted years of my life to humanitarian causes, at points at physical risk to my well-being, but still don't owe a cent.
It's all BS. America RIP.

Paul, "The answer is (NOT) that the United States is an immoral country, with an immoral people"
The answer, Paul, is that the US is the headquarters of an immoral global ruling-elite corporate/financial EMPIRE, and the American people, like the Kansans of Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas" have been lied to, propagandized, and anesthetized into not even understanding what is being done in their own name, not realizing what is really in their own economic, social or moral interest, and mostly importantly not even knowing that they are caught in the belly of a murderous EMPIRE — which is only posing as a 'Vichy' image of their own lost country!

Most of this immorality comes from years of desentizing of the American people from "Mind War" that comes from the Pentagon directly through the TV sets and video games neutralizing the minds like baking soda to battery acid. TV ("the idiot box") Americas God.
