Obama’s October Surprise: Largest War Games in US-Israeli History
Israel’s daily Maariv reported yesterday that the long delayed war games between U.S. and Israeli forces will take place in October. It noted that some commentators are calling it a “dress rehearsal” for the aftermath of an Israeli attack on Iran. IDF sources quoted in the article called the exercises “of immense importance.”
These will be the largest such military maneuvers in the history of the joint U.S.-Israel relationship. They were originally scheduled for several months ago but were canceled abruptly, according to some, at the behest of Ehud Barak, who wanted to send a message to the U.S. that Israel might be planning an attack and prefer not to have such an event interfere with it.
Three thousand U.S. Air Force personnel and a larger IDF contingent will focus on air warfare and missile defense. The primary goal is to prepare for the aftermath of an Israeli attack on Iran and the expected counterattack against Israel.
The date of the war games is no accident, coming only a few weeks before the presidential election. They will thus serve two purposes: shoring up Jewish support for Obama’s campaign and reassuring Israel that the U.S. will provide it every weapon money can buy to defend itself should it counterattack Iran. One expects that all this might be predicated on an Israeli commitment not to attack Iran quite yet — perhaps not until sometime after Nov. 4?
As part of the proceedings, the U.S. will bring new military hardware and technology Israel hasn’t yet seen, such as an upgraded battery of the Patriot PAC-3 missile system designed as a backup security system in case the higher-level security systems fail to shoot down Iran’s missiles and the Aegis anti-missile radar system. Israel will also demonstrate the new Arrow 2 missile, which will be able to detect missile launches even earlier than previously.
Emphasis will be placed on combating the ballistic threat from Iran. This is meant as an explicit message to Iran, which has threatened a broad response to an Israeli attack, that such an attack on Israel will fail and isn’t worth trying. Of course, the assumption behind this is that Israel believes that it can both attack Iran and face no consequences from such an attack: one of the most glaring examples of having your cake and eating it too I’ve yet seen.
Other factors that will play a role in this exercise will be the possibility that Syria and Hezbollah would join with Iran in attacking Israel. In preparation for the exercises, Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, commander of the 3rd Air Force, visited Israel recently and launched a joint command that would conduct the war games.
Business Insider also reports that the Defense Department has awarded Raytheon a $338-million contract for 361 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Most of them will be configured for at-sea launches from guided-missile cruisers such as those patrolling with the Navy’s Fifth Fleet just outside Iranian waters. Though they won’t be delivered till 2014, they might be ordered in the expectation that current stock could be depleted in the sort of attack Israel and/or the U.S. might launch against Iran.
What is particularly disturbing in all this is that the U.S. seems to be inching ever closer to supporting an Israeli attack on Iran. While Obama and his officials have appeared to be reigning in Netanyahu, holding him back from an attack, this type of military preparation serves as a wink and a nod to such supposed efforts at restraint.
The end result is that if Israel does attack, it will be able to point to this military exercise as an example of U.S. encouragement of such an approach. Bibi will quite reasonably argue: Why did you show us all this missile defense hardware designed to protect us in the event we strike Iran, if you didn’t expect us to do so? And he will be right.
Further, military preparations of this sort indicate an acceptance by the U.S. that diplomacy can’t possibly work. Instead of serving as a threat toward Iran, as Obama might argue, that this is what lies in store if it doesn’t negotiate in good faith, it may instead be seen as a cynical statement by us that we ourselves don’t believe negotiations can work. In other words, it could be a self-fulfilling prophecy that leads to war.
Some might argue that scheduling such exercises indicates a tacit acceptance by Israel that it won’t attack Iran until the elections. But that might not be so. There is no reason Netanyahu couldn’t simply attack, causing the automatic cancellation of the war games. Some Israeli military-security insiders have told Reuters that they believe Bibi will attack before the elections in the belief that Obama will feel compelled to support Israel due to the sensitivity of a potentially close election campaign. Such projection on Israel’s part tells much more about its self-involved egoism than it does about any actual U.S. response to an attack.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Waltz, an international relations specialist at Columbia University argues in “Why Iran Should Get the Bomb” that precisely what’s needed in the Middle East is an Iranian bomb to establish a power balance in the region. He believes that, given the current status of nuclear proliferation in the world, it’s better for states not to have a regional monopoly as Israel does. A balanced standoff such as between Pakistan and Iran, the U.S. and Russia, or China and Japan (the latter has breakout capacity but hasn’t actually created a weapon) actually promotes stability rather than the opposite. It’s a provocative, contrarian approach but quite persuasive.

Obama, the SOB, like his lying troll Panetta, consistently talks not only out of both sides of his mouth but out of another orifice that normal people respectfully use for its intended purpose. This serves to stink up the debate while giving cover to further lies. War is only kosher item that appears to be on the menu for these lunatics.

Russia said clearly NO for an attack against Iran.Probably Putin did it in his visit now in Israel more blatantly. And Israeli public opinion is against a war done by Israel but is for one lead by US.So i believe Israel will not attack but her "determination"could bring to more sanctions. However ,around 20% of Israel populace will leave if a war will break out.The number of these could be bigger because "incidentally"majority of Israelis hold double citizenship.

Double citizenship ? Isn't that interesting that so many Israelis can 'be away on vacation' when a war is started on their behalf while Palestinians are forced to remain in the land they were born in and suffer the consequences of that war even though they will never benefit from it ?

It may be Bush that opened Pandora's box but it is Obama who secretly/openly does everything to prevent the contents being put back into it. The Presidency itself has become an illusion. The reality is the National Security State which tells him what to do. War is always on the table. Peace is not an option.

Obama may get Jewish money if he helps the Israeli fascists attack Iran, but one would hope that he'll lose progressive money. If progressives can't stand up on this issue, they have betrayed the cause.

As the article states…just another way that they can "have their cake and eating it too". And the Palestinians? Well they are left without something much more worse than only the crumbs…freedom.

I have to wonder how many IDF ground troops are involved in the exercise, and why. It's not like the Israelis are going to send troops into Iran to lead the way for US forces anywhere in the world, or even fight beside our troops, ever.

Bammy got upstaged by Benny and cancelled the last exercise. There are a world of events that could stop this exercise from happening. And if it does, aside from the photo ops so what?

Again an America/Israeli shill writing a nonsensical screed.
I don’t doubt that the maneuver will be just a maneuver as intended. However, I fear that there may be the possibility of a real October surprise—on the U. S.
In other words, during the maneuvers Israel will attempt a sneak attack on Iran, making Iran believe that the maneuver was a cover for military attack, to which Iran will quickly retaliate. Thereupon Israel will stay back and let the U.S. continue to fight another war for it.
However, Israel cannot escape being horribly bloodied because Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas would know that this is the war for survival and they will simultaneously rain thousands of missiles into Israel that no anti-missile battery can stop.

Extremely dangerous scenario with unknouwn concequencies… let us not to underestimate "masters in deception", masters and inventers of modern day terrorism /without borders/….US and Israel can easily wage "false flags" of any kind, Russia and China is the only obstacle. I believe, that real message Putin delivered to Bibi in person was: "Dont touch!!! Syria and Iran or else….".
We may be suprised, but conflict could start almost anywhere in ME even in Pakistan….
Already in 2006 I predicted that Israel will be working hard to get NATO involved into its colonist wars of aggression / Libya was god start/ and I am afraid that just to seel commitment of NATO, "false flag" of terrible proportions may happened somewhere in Europe. Internacional Banksters need some major war anyway, so here we go again. Hitlary Clinton with "media prostitutes behind" acts like Goebles for "uninterested part of mankind". 2012 did not end yet and fragile peace between World power can be broken within minutes!!
Too late may suprised, brainwashed "people" found out, who was the real sponsor of "Internacional terrorism"….Twisted religious texts in hands of atheists destroyed religion which was corner stone for other major religions today and produced "sadistic, messianic, fanatical followers and preachers" and blind people not able or not interested verify basic facts follow the "Fuhreres of Internacional Zionism" just like Germans during WW2……sad and tragig pete czech

"between Pakistan and Iran, the U.S. and Russia, or China and Japan" I think he means Pakistan and India. China and Japans break out lol, There is no balance there just a US client state with US bases and China. The days of China being worried about the Japanese are ancient history. Without the US Japan and South Korea are nothing, hence why both their militaries fall under direct US control in the event of any hostilities.
Even if Israel and the US can eliminate Iran without breaking a nail why would they do that without first creating an alternative boogey man, are you people forgetting the industrial complex's requirement for an enemy. Alqaeda or Africa just doesnt cut it, and Chinas not ready yet. Iran is more useful as a threat.

I see a clampdown on the US public with martial law in response to a false flag attack both in the US and London in October precipitating an attack on Iran, Syria or both. They must be pretty cocky. I think the Russians know what is going on and a Russia Chinese response is already in the making with the movement of 90,000 combined troops to Syria purportedly for war games just as Israel and the US are gearing up for their war games in Israel. This may possibly coincide with economic collapse in Europe and USA adding to the heightened state of fear and tension in all nations involved and war may be the way foreward out of the economic crisis. Leaks have arisen about majort game changing false flags in both London and the US at around the same time, in October, from totally different sources.

When martial law is introduced in the US the borders will be closed. You have a little over 4 months if you want to leave and thats it. You need to pray very hard and God will help you decide the right thing to do. God bless you.

I disagree with Waltz's view that nuclear balance leads to stability and question why this is a better approach than calling for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons, not to mention a worldwide ban on nuclear weapons. Encouraging nuclear proliferation makes the world more dangerous and ignores the increasing likelihood of an accidental nuclear war in times of crisis. The point is to bring Israel, India, North Korea, and Pakistan into the Nonproliferation Treaty and force the nuclear powers to start disarming. When hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, get incinerated in a regional nuclear war, how are you going to explain your position that Waltz's view was persuasive?

When does the "boy who cried wolf" or "chicken little" rule start to kick in? Silverstein has been predicting an imminent attack on Iran for years and always links it to some new event (sometimes, as with the missile contract described in this piece, with no discernible connection). When this latest prediction fails to come true, can we once and for all agree that Silverstein's predictions are absurd?

A suprise sneak attack on Iran will destroy or make un-operable Iran's missile response. Those few missiles still capable of being launched will be mostly handled by the the missile defences and vast Israel bomb shelters. Since Israel will lauch first, there will be time to get its people to shelter (maybe not the Pals).
. There wil be a carpet bombing, using bunker buster bombs, by the Israeli air force of southern Lebanon while the Israeli German made subs lauch on Iran's comand and control. America will join in as ordered to take the future hits, while Israel settles southern Lebanon, now clear of livimg people. After clearing all the existing villages in southern Lebanon by bulldozers, Israel will claim that there never was anyone living there or the few that were there left on there own accord.
