The outing of Gen. David Petraeus as an adulterer, and his subsequent resignation as CIA Director, was carried out by an unknown FBI “whistleblower” who leaked the facts of the FBI investigation into the General’s private life to Rep. Eric Cantor. The New York Times reports:
“Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, said Saturday an F.B.I. employee whom his staff described as a whistle-blower told him about Mr. Petraeus’s affair and a possible security breach in late October, which was after the investigation had begun.
“’I was contacted by an F.B.I. employee concerned that sensitive, classified information may have been compromised and made certain Director Mueller was aware of these serious allegations and the potential risk to our national security,’ Mr. Cantor said in a statement.
“Mr. Cantor talked to the person after being told by Representative Dave Reichert, Republican of Washington, that a whistle-blower wanted to speak to someone in the Congressional leadership about a national security concern. On Oct. 31, his chief of staff, Steve Stombres, called the F.B.I. to tell them about the call.”
The FBI probe apparently started in late spring, when several people associated with Petraeus — not just the one woman, as has been reported elsewhere — received harassing emails. The emails were traced to 40-year-old Paula Broadwell, national security analyst, military intelligence veteran, and author of a biography of Petraeus. Authorities believed his email account may have been hacked, and this led to a remarkable irony: the CIA chief’s emails were monitored, without his knowledge, whereupon it was discovered Broadwell may have either had access to his account or tried to obtain access. In any case, in the course of their spying, FBI monitors discovered a large volume of emails to and from Broadwell. Looking for evidence of a security breach, all they found was evidence of a “human drama,” as one anonymous FBI official put it: an illicit affair between Petraeus and Broadwell.
Petraeus was only informed of the investigation on October 25 or 26. So here we have the astonishing fact of the CIA’s head honcho being spied on for a period of months by our own law enforcement officials.
Or maybe it wasn’t a simple case of complaints about “harassing” or threatening emails. Fox News avers:
“The FBI had been investigating an unrelated and much broader case before stumbling on the affair. Fox News has learned that during the course of this investigation, the name of biographer Paula Broadwell came up. The FBI followed that lead and in doing so, uncovered his affair with her.”
What was this “much broader case”? Almost certainly it was a counterintelligence investigation, i.e. a pushback against efforts by some foreign entity to penetrate or otherwise compromise US secrets. We can only guess at the specifics, however we do know that in the course of that investigation Broadwell’s name “came up.”
On the surface, at
least, Broadwell is not the sort of person whose name would come up
in a counterintelligence investigation: a West Point graduate, where
she earned degrees in political geography and systems engineering, she seems like the veritable embodiment of All-American
red-white-and-blue super-patriotism. This
biographical account on her high school website
says
“Paula pursued a military intelligence career abroad, serving in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During her service, especially after 9-11, Paula’s intensity was directed toward the war against terror; her contributions and efforts to thwart terrorism have been commended by the U.S. Army and by Europe’s Special Operations Forces Commanding General. In this arena, she has planned counter-terrorism initiatives presented to NATO and worked on transnational counter-terrorism issues with foreign and domestic agencies, U.S. Special Forces, and the FBI.”
Graduate studies at the University of Denver in Middle East studies enabled her to travel to “Jordan and Israel,” and make a swing through the Persian Gulf and Europe where she spoke at various conferences. This triumphal tour was capped by a Harvard fellowship “for study in Syria and Iran.”
While Broadwell’s current academic affiliation is with Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, her previous post was deputy director of the Jebsen Center for Counter-Terrorism Studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School. The Center, according to its self-description, “distinguishes itself by a philosophy that maintains counter-terrorism should be predictive, preventive and preemptive, with the latter being a last resort.” Founded in 2005, the Jebsen Center was made possible by the generous donation of one Jan Henrik Jebsen, heir to the Norwegian shipping fortune, who gave $1.3 million to set it up. Jebsen, a former investment banker with Lazard Freres, is the principal of Gamma Applied Visions Group, an international octopus with tentacles all over the place: part arms dealer and weapons developer, part “green” energy company. As one might expect from someone who has so much of his multi-billion dollar fortune invested in making and selling armaments, Jebsen is on the board of directors of the distinctly warlike Hudson Institute, where Scooter Libby, Douglas Feith, Michael Ledeen, and practically every neocon you’ve ever heard of have found refuge.
While, in true neocon fashion, Hudson scholars conjure a wide diversity of imminent “threats” to the US, including China and Russia, their main focus is the threat of Islamist radicalism, especially as it impacts Israel. Indeed, Hudson operates inside Israel, where it pushes the far-rightist views of the most extreme elements in Israeli society: the settler movement, and the faction of Likud angling for war with Iran. It has also focused its attention on purging universities of academics who don’t toe the right-wing ultra-nationalist Likudnik line.
More recently, former Hudson president and “trustee emeritus” Max Singer — who has since moved to Israel, where, as a “public policy consultant” at Bar Ilan University, he spends his time inciting violence against Palestinians — is on a mission to protect Israel from the alleged threat posed by the President of the United States.
The Jebsen Center has been equally useful to the neocons. Richard H. Schultz, head of Tufts’ International Studies program (of which the Center is a part) was a signatory to the Project for a New American Century’s “open letter” to President Bush urging war with Iraq and a number of other Middle Eastern actors in the wake of 9/11. Here he is recommending the importation of Israeli “anti-terrorist” techniques to pacify the restless natives of Iraq. Here is another Jebsen Center scholar describing alleged terrorist actions engaged in by Iran worldwide. And then there’s the testimony of this guy:
“The idea of overthrowing the Iranian government through covert but peaceful means is not original. The project was first brought to my attention in August 2006 when I worked as an intern research assistant at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Diplomacy’s Jebsen Center for Counter-terrorism. I worked for the then director of the center Brigadier General Russell Howard (Ret.) on a project titled Bringing Down Iran Without Firing A Shot. I wasn’t very experienced in the world of covert operations in the field or in the academic realm but I was very interested in becoming involved in it. General Howard, on the other hand, was not only a counter-terrorism strategist but a veteran Special Forces officer, an academic, and a tutor. It was General Howard who introduced me to the idea of targeting factors specific to Iran in order to adapt to the country’s specific needs. He had six factors which he believed were important: The military use of ongoing insurgencies within Iran, political strife, economic strife, declining oil revenues, demographics, and deteriorating infrastructure.”
Interestingly, in November of 2006, during her tenure at the Jebsen Center, Broadwell led a group of Fletcher School students on a trip to New York City to meet with then Iranian UN representative Javad Zarif. Both are alumni of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.
All this establishes a context that goes far beyond the titillating details of the alleged affair between Petraeus and Broadwell — and this is no doubt what set alarm bells ringing in the intelligence community when it was revealed. Is there really any need to point out the uses of the “honeypot” in intelligence-gathering and other covert activities regularly engaged in by spooks of all nations? From Mata Hari to the Mossad agent who lured Israeli nuclear scientist Mordecahi Vanunu, sex is a time-honored weapon in the war of spy-vs-spy. A secret affair with the CIA Director is the equivalent of the Honeypot Olympics, and we have to ask: was the remarkably fit Ms. Broadwell a lure? If so, she’s won a Gold Medal.
Broadwell’s actions — sending emails that were bound to be traced back to her — appear to make little sense on the surface. But if the goal of luring a 60-year-old geezer into an affair with a much younger woman was to expose him, and get him fired, then surely her antics succeeded in accomplishing that goal.
So who would have an interest in getting rid of Petraeus? Here’s where the Cantor connection comes in. The tip by an anonymous “FBI employee” that wound up in Cantor’s office two weeks ago came through Rep. David Reichert, Republican of Washington state, who has a friend who knows the whistleblower. Cantor then spoke to the whistleblower directly, who put him in touch with FBI Director Mueller.
Cantor is a great friend of Israel, and Petraeus — not so much. The General was attacked, as you’ll recall, by partisans of the Lobby, including Abe Foxman, when he delivered testimony before Congress citing Israel as a strategic liability in the Middle East. As the executor of the new Obamaite policy of sidling up to Islamists, not only in Libya but also in Syria and Egypt, Petraeus was no doubt seen by the Israelis as an enemy to be neutralized.
Broadwell’s affiliation with the Jebsen Center, and the Center’s connection to the neoconservative network, sets the scene: a young, attractive woman with impeccable national security credentials throws herself at Petraeus, and he takes the bait. Whether she’s been recruited by a foreign intelligence agency at this point or not is irrelevant: he’s already put himself in a vulnerable position, and there are any number of actors on the international stage more than willing to press their advantage.
Will we ever know the full story? At this point, the story is so hot that it may burn the cover story — “it’s all about sex” — right off the wrapper. Because there’s more — a lot more — here than meets the eye. When Cantor pledged to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he and his fellow Republicans “will serve as a check on the administration” in regard to the President’s policy toward Israel, he was clearly aligning himself with a foreign leader against American interests as perceived by the White House. But would he really go this far — deliberately taking down a key figure, one beloved by Republicans, in order to keep his promise to Netanyahu?
Stay tuned to this space, because this story is moving fast….
Update: This morning [11/12/12] the New York Times reports:
“F.B.I. agents interviewed Ms. Broadwell for the first time the week of Oct. 21, and she acknowledged the affair, a government official briefed on the matter said. She also voluntarily gave the agency her computer. In a search, the agents discovered several classified documents, which raised the additional question of whether Mr. Petraeus had given them to her. She said that he had not. Agents interviewed Mr. Petraeus the following week. He also admitted to the affair but said he had not given any classified documents to her. The agents then interviewed Ms. Broadwell again on Friday, Nov. 2, the official said.”

NOTES IN THE MARGIN
Our regular winter fundraising drive starts on Monday, and I am literally shaking in my boots. If we don’t make it , the future of Antiwar.com will be very much in doubt. Antiwar.com has been in crisis mode ever since the Great Recession set in. We’ve been hanging by our fingernails, financially, and had to let go of two of our valued employees in the past few months — just in order to survive. Have you ever had to proofread your own work? That’s what I have to do now, and let me tell you, it ain’t easy.
We have fewer people, less resources — and more work to do than ever before. With Obama reelected, many people think they can just sit back and relax. NOT TRUE! Indeed, we’ll see the real Obama soon enough, as we did in Libya — and Iran still looms large, with the threat of war hanging over our heads as never before.
He doesn’t need your votes or support anymore — so it’s deuces wild, folks.
Please — make your tax-deductible donation today. Because who else is making the case for peace?

Taking on the more salacious aspects of this case, have you see pics of Jill Kelley, the woman Broadwell was angry at? Have you see pics of Petraeus' wife?
To me, that explains it all. If Broadwell was really just a "swallow" – as the Russian used to call their sex baits – then why would she bother to threaten a third woman?
But if you look at the woman involved, Kelley, she's far more attractive than Petraeus' wife. Broadwell had to have a reason to be attacking here. My guess is it's very simple: Petraeus was screwing both of them.
Of course, it's possible that if Broadwell was a "swallow", then she may have found another "other woman" to be a threat to her mission.
Justin is right: stay tuned, this could turn interesting – if it isn't covered up, as it probably will be.

The Monica Lewinsky affair definitly was used by the Likudniks to punish Clinton for daring to try to settle the Palistinian question. It was orcehestrated by Luccianne Goldberg and other wackos. The whole career of Jonah Goldberg was built on a stain left on Monica's dress. Of course Clinton like Petraeus could not keep it in his pants when it came to younger meat. If Cantor is in on this deal it stinks to high heaven.

I think it's more likely that some Zionist agent(s) in our intelligence community got wind of the affair and forged the "threatening" emails. In the reptilian world of military politics Petraeus and Broadwell are iguanas, whereas Israel-firsters are vipers.

Actually, this makes a lot of sense. Broadwell was a swallow and time came to blow the cover for the FBI to move in, everything did happen as planned. What gives everything away is that a whistleblower informed Cantor.
Remember, you are a whistle blower when you blow the lid on illegal activities, the guy who gave the information to cantor is not a whistle blower, he is a traitor as the FBI were doing their job within the law.

Interesting, but I confess to being somewhat perplexed by the Cantor role. If the director of CIA was being investigated by the FBI the director of FBI would surely be following the case closely and would not need a heads up from Cantor. I suspect what Cantor was warning Mueller that he should not make any attempt to sweep the case under the carpet and make it go away as, in the person of Cantor, Congress had learned about what was going on and would insist on full disclosure.

What is troubling about the usual romance model is that by outing the affair, Paula Broadwell would have been committing to bringing down Petraeus. It would come out, he would be disgraced. She had to have known chapter and verse about what he should have told the vetting people about his affair. Yes, he tried to pretend it hadn't started before his appointment to CIA director, but Broadwell understood what was at stake with his being caught in such a lie. She sent the messages (and as Justin pointed out, it wasn't just one) in order to bring him down. Her motive? That's the question.
Would it be career suicide for her? Not in a world of neocon think tanks. She's find a source of income, if she hadn't already found one – follow the money.
Was she really just a woman at the end of her rope? Was she hysterically upset, at the end of her patience? I don't know, but we're not talking about a guy with the usual romantic charms. We're talking about a sixty year old man whose main aphrodisiacal appeal was his position and power. And without it? Would she still be attracted to him? Didn't she have alternatives? I'd imagine so. I'd imagine she could find someone else pretty fast if she crooked her finger.

That makes sense. In the usual course of events, in order to retain the power relationships, that may even be what Mueller was up to, until the so-called whistle-blower disclosed the investigation to Cantor.
Even if I had no sense that the emails were sent to bring down Petraeus, and the extra step of opening up to Congress about them was essential to the endgame, I would feel that once having read them, the FBI would worry Paula's husband could be a loose cannon in a messy divorce. After all, he wasn't sworn to secrecy. If most agents thought they could maintain the cover-up of Petraeus personal life, there might have been someone who differed in his judgment. His? Maybe the whistleblower was a woman.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Here is how I see it. Once Paula's book on Petraeus was done, Petraeus no longer had as much need for her, so he started banging the other chick(s) more often. Somehow, after a multi-year relationship, Paula really thought Petraeus belonged to her, even though both are married to other people! Stupid woman.

Does this mean that Mr. Cantor did the US a favor instead of informing his real boss first as he once pontificated?
NEW YORK — Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday during a meeting in New York that the new GOP majority in the House will "serve as a check" on the Obama administration, a statement unusual for its blunt disagreement with U.S. policy delivered directly to a foreign leader.
"Eric stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration and what has been, up until this point, one party rule in Washington," read a statement from Cantor's office on the one-on-one meeting. "He made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States, and that the security of each nation is reliant upon the other."
Cantor also took issue with Obama administration policies in other areas, including Iran, with the statement from his office saying the congressman "believes that it is time for the administration to fully and aggressively implement the Iran Sanctions Act passed by Congress earlier this year."

I don't think 'the lobby' (if it really exists) was concerned about Petreaus. More likely the people at CIA he had to report to hated working for him. At CIA don't piss off your underlings. This is sort of what happened to Nixon who pissed off the #2 at FBI and look what happened. If it were the neo cons, why wait till after the election. A better question is how did Petreaus survive so long. I think he is the longest serving high level US commander during a war since Gen. Washington. It is surprising to see how leaders like Lincoln and Churchill and even Stalin went through military leaders so quickly but Petreaus stayed until they promoted him to CIA.

Broadwell was a spy. Period.
A long time 'sleeper'.
All her brilliant credentials don't mean a thing – pure cover, until she was called into action.
But the question is a spy for who? The cunning Putin, the wily Chinese,
or our 'greatest ally', the 'democracy in the desert' (barf)
Remember the USS Liberty?
That attack should have been followed by a wave a B-52s flying low and loud over Tel Aviv, not dropping anything, just reminding our 'friends' who's boss and who pays the bills.

Side note: I wonder if the latest from broadwell regarding the alleged hostages in the annex, was really another red herring to confuse investigators about the POSSIBLE prior failed plan of Clarridge and his moles, to take Stevens hostage during the attack, to mimic the iranian hostage crisis, to effect the election as it did for Reagan. In other words, there may be some findings during the Benghazi investigation by the FBI about hostages, but whether they were past or future, american or libyan, may be difficult to nail down.

What's interesting amongst the lure of the sex story, the most interesting tidbit in Mr. Raimondo's piece appears to have been ignored. That is that classified documents that she shouldn't have had were found on HER computer. Not the general's computer, her computer.
I knew right away that the reason for the resignation could not be the affair. There had to be something more. And for a senior official like this, a serious breach in security is the first thing that came to mind about why someone would go to Gen. Petreaus, tell him that he had to resign and resign quickly. Also explains why admitting the affair seemed less damaging to the General than the real story of the security breach.
Rather than theories about someone doing all of this to bring down the General, the more interesting questions are what was she doing with those classified documents? Was she for instance leaking them back through her neocon think-tank contacts and thus probably off to Israel? If she was a "swallow", the far more likely goal of the mission was to get access to top level CIA secrets, not trying to force the resignation of a CIA director who can easily be replaced with out the Terror War missing a beat.
And, note the mention that this was part of a longer running FBI investigation where Paula's name had already come up. Like perhaps the AIPAC leak/spy scandal from a few years back and maybe a resulting FBI team that had been looking at Israeli spying in the US Gov ever since???

If I was a counter-intelligence official investigating a security breach of the head of the CIA, just one level below the President, then there's only one official in the government that I trust giving my report to …. that's Gen. Betrayus boss…. President Obama.
My guess is that President Obama was secretly briefed on this, probably about the time the FBI showed their hand and did the interviews with Betrayus and Paula. Its also very obvious that it was Obama who had the interest in making dang sure this did not come out before the election. Obama probably is the one who met with Betrayus and told him his only option was to resign, and most likely he insisted on the timing of that only happening after the election.

Golly, with all those brilliant geniuses in government, how is it that this country is in shambles? It's clearer to me that the more impressive someone's resume, especially if it involves a lot of baloney from ivy league "universities", the more corrupt, incompetent, and foolish the person. We were OK when the country was run "by the people", now it's run by highly "educated" 1%ers and look were we are.
Too early to tell what is going on here. Even if once or twice the fallen "king" hasn't been enthusiastic about israel, he may have changed his mind after he was "talked to". He was after all chummy with neocons to the extend of asking them what to say- as all American so-called "leaders" do. One just has to look at the desperate crying over this "tragedy" by the neocon parrots in the media. The fact is, if you have any power in government, let alone someone of such a caliber, will be recruited, brain-washed, "convinced", bullied daily and whatnot by necons/aipac/israel. There don't seem to be a whole lot of people involved in security/foreign policy who can think and talk for themselves. The security of this country has been wholesale outsourced to isreal, and no one seems to care.

I wonder where Paula Kranz came up with the idea that she had to be a warrior, and on terror yet. Also, could she have been recruited by Israel during her West Point days, when she went there for some kind of study abroad? Why did she choose Israel? I don't know if she is even Jewish, she might even be motivated by some kind of fundamentalist religious ideas. She might simply be a woman who went off the deep end when she found herself so close to high power. Or she might be a spy. I wonder what her holiday travel plans might be. Or is it even necessary to leave anymore when you have been caught red-handed downloading classified information?
If there is any longstanding propaganda that is repeated a lot, it is that Israel is our steadfast ally in the Mideast, and never a liability. Although you may not want it to be destroyed, you might find that the cost of a belief in its being this perfect ally, this permanent liaison, is that you get whacked now and then when your policies in the region run into conflict with theirs. I think from their point of view, they should make the policy and we should implement it, particularly with respect to Iran. I am sure we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with the Petraeus resignation. It will be the journalistic gift that keeps on giving.

As for spying for Israel: one needs to understand we're talking in any case about an elite who are fighting for more than sixty years every day without resting against the same imagined monster ready to destroy all they believe in. Wouldn't you think they would make sure there are many well prepared agents "embedded" at the front line at all times in every power center? I know I would have that as priority.
That said, it still looks like it all ended in a typical personal mud fight by email and not the cool headed counter-intelligence operation you'd expect. Perhaps she lost control but more likely it all is simply a quite common relationship drama but then enlarged by media to grotesque proportions.

Are you joking? The only thing Cliton and Petit could reasonable get was something unattractive, in a normal state of affairs. Both are not lady killers in any shake of a toilet. I can't even imagine their personality being that good. :) I'd rather have a sleepless night if you know what I mean. I think Petit drugged Broadwell, other than that, I can not explain her lack of judgement. Most military officers, a big percentage, are unattractive, must be part of the profile. And Petit is unattractive. Miller the guy they put there now, get a slim man, slightly fem. :) hahahaha gotta have a sense of humor in this stuff,

perplexed? I would wait to see who dirt-bag puts in charge of the CIA before I was perplexed. Cantor and Broadwell make for a good story. Getting the military out of the CIA is not a bad thing. What better way to ruin Cantor, not to mention the fable "neocons".

When discussing the reactions and counterreactions of female rivals involved in the Petraeus affair, we must remember that extensive research has shown that regardless of IQ, education, or intellectual achievements, the emotional maturity of the average female peaks at the approximate age of twelve years.

please delete my previous comment; this is the entire post I wanted to leave !
I have to say that the aspect, which bothers me, the most about this entire story, is that it all seem like a ridiculous carnival of Democrats.
Leaving aside the Jeffersons at the white house, our new royalty features such characters as Mrs General P, looking like Mrs. Bunker with her reputed job in the Obama administration; what does she do there ? And is she now going to loose that job as well ? According to ABC she was rather hopping mad at her husband, and you've got to feel a little sorry for Mr. P. because no matter what kind of grilling he's going to get in the Senate for running a prison in Benghazi, it won't compare to the "Holly, now let me explaín …" scenarios playing out at the home of the ex Chief of the Central Intelligence Agency.
And what about those prison camps at the consulate in Benghazi, information that reputedly comes to light from Ms Broadwell herself, was she making these pronouncements from underneath the desk of the talented general ? Are we going to be confronted with other national defence strategic policy statements from our "soccer"(-cum-tonsil hockey) mom ?
Then, there's General P himself a cross between Colonel Potter and Hawkeye, purporting integrity and strategic brilliance of vast proportions but ultimately displaying only those of a Frank Burns. Lets also not forget the poor sap, cuckold husband, writing pathetic letters to dear Abby and, for all we know, to. Ruth as well, soliciting advice about how to reign in his wayward wife, all the while professing absurd subservience and misplaced allegiance to his malefactor. And last but not least the femme fatale herself, Ms. B, a phys-ed teacher with her armless shirts, missing only the whistle, almost directly out of a Porkey's III (though she seems to have been displaying that alertness we come to expect from our West Point and Harvard graduates when it comes to finding a substitute for her whistle).

"NEW YORK — Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday during a meeting in New York that the new GOP majority in the House will "serve as a check" on the Obama administration, a statement unusual for its blunt disagreement with U.S. policy delivered directly to a foreign leader."

"I am sure we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with the Petraeus resignation. It will be the journalistic gift that keeps on giving."
One would hope so but, given that investigative journalism (at least in the MSM) has been dead for years, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.
And if it should turn out that this is a case of zionist espionage, I expect the MSM will quickly lose all interest in the story.

"Security of each nation is reliant upon each other" — wow, quite a statement when you also have a country that talks about the Samson option and has a whole mythology around Masada – it sounds like a suicide pact between two lovers, and is really nuts. The US does not rely for its security upon any other nation. To say so is either a lie or a betrayal.

"All her brilliant credentials don't mean a thing" – I would probably have to agree. There are plenty of fit, intelligent women who can craft BS prose, but how many of them have a fanatic purpose in mind? A few perhaps. I cannot help but consider the ten Russian spies apprehended in the US a few years ago, all with stolen identities. They had completely assimilated to the US culture, one of them with a dead Canadian baby's identity. They were married couples raising US-born kids who had no idea about their parents' origins in the Soviet Union. One man got a degree from Harvard in 2000, and was a student at Paula Kranz Broadwell's Kennedy School. Could she have been the second generation of a spy family? Weirder things have happened, although I always used to think this was just right wing paranoia. The Russian sleeper spies, who worked at it for decades, convinced me that lying and passing as American was a well-crafted program to gain influence, access and perhaps ultimate political power. But is it just empty at its core? Anyway, it happened. Would it apply to Paula? Only digging harder into her family history could reveal that, as well as whether at some point she had been recruited. I think that is what the FBI may be after.

An interesting take on the story. The original conspiracy against Abraham Lincoln wasn't an assassination either, but a hostage-taking to nullify the effects of the Civil War on the South.
It got scaled back.
But your use of the word "effect", while closer to the meaning than most swapping of "effect" for "affect", is understandable, because if true it means that this was an attempt to cause and not simply influence a Republican victory. Curiouser and curiouser.

[…] Just after the election, Cantor revealed information about what was presumably a secret FBI investigation of CIA Director Petraeus that immediately, if perhaps only temporarily, ended Petraeus’ career. The relevance to this bizarre Cantor Connection of Petraeus’ courageous 2010 classified warning that supporting the hard-line Israeli policy against the Palestinians was harming U.S. national security would seem far more worthy of investigation and punishment than his private relationships with women. Was it all an Israeli plot [Antiwar.com]? […]

I don't understand why so many people seem to think that Pres Obama must be in on everything. He was running for reelection full-time plus dealing with the aftereffects of hurricane Sandy. I think it is more likely that this affair was kept from him until after the election. FBI director Mueller could have kept it hidden until then. How can any president be kept fully informed about all that is going on in our unmanageable huge bureaucracy. Impossible!
BTW, Justin's speculation that Ms Broadwell might have been a spy for the neocons is very interesting. Even if proven true, I do not expect this to be ever reported by our corporate-owned and controlled msm.

Exactly, Canadian. This will probably only be a two-week story at most. The looming 'fiscal-cliff' is much bigger and will affect all Americans. Unless another war starts before Christmas, a now more powerful Obama vs now less powerful House Republicans will be the bigger story.

It would be nice if the good people of Cantor's district would see the light and vote him out next time. It would seem that the war-first neocons have lost at least some power due to their election losses. Of course, most House districts are hopelessly gerrymandered to protect the incumbent.

Correction required RE: "Israeli nuclear scientist" Vanunu -he was NOT ever that, just a mid level tech in Israel's 7 story underground WMD facility.
In 2005, we began a series of interviews but on 30 September 1986, Vanunu flew from London to Rome with the agent he knew as Cindy and who he thought was a beautician on holiday. Legend has it that it was a ‘honey trap’ but the opportunity for sex already existed in London where they both had their own rooms.
During the March 2006 taping of “30 Minutes With Vanunu” I asked him, "What were you thinking when you took off with her?"
Vanunu looked me directly in the eyes and maintained eye contact as he immediately replied, "No, it wasn't like THAT. A tabloid paper published a story with some of the photos of the Dimona I had taken. They never contacted me for my side of the story but they published my photo with a bad report; lots of lies. I knew I was in danger and I wasn't sure if the Times would still print my story. I thought I would just leave London with her for a few days. We went to movies and museums. I trusted her." – http://www.wearewideawake.org/index.php?option=co…

Isn't it curious that Cantor, who loves any opportunity to grandstand about Obama's failings, has been so quiet about this? Here we have Cantor informed ahead of people like the President and the head of the Senate intelligence committee, and then even after the matter is publicly exposed, he's so polite about it. Now – given his fanatical support for Israel, and Paula Broadwell's background as some kind of ninja warrior for the war on 'terror' (read 'everybody Israel doesn't like') – doesn't that lend further support to the hypothesis that this is really not about sex but about a spy/saboteur for Israel embedded with our CIA director? 'Move along, folks. Nothing to see here…..'

This reminds me of the Williams affair –remember that colonel at CFB Trenton? His snuff pictures all over Canadian media, as if such media suddenly went into pornography!
Williams pleaded guilty of raping and murdering as charged, as if he was following orders. This suggests that someone was hiding something while the whole country was under a state of shock.
Now, the U.S. media make up a similar story of Petraeus consorting with "milady" Broadwell, like they did with Clinton and milady Lewinsky. The circumstances suggest something is being hidden in broad daylight.
