Dov Zakheim, Mitt Romney’s top foreign policy advisor, wants us to know the neocons aren’t in charge of RomneyWorld:
“One of the favorite canards that Obama activists and surrogates hurl at Mitt Romney is that he is surrounded by a group of wild-eyed George W. Bush neo-cons who cannot wait to bomb Iran and bring America into yet another Middle Eastern conflict….”
But these canard-disseminators “have it all wrong,” because:
“None of the staunchest ‘architects and advocates’ of the Iraq war, I repeat, none, is advising Governor Romney. Not Donald Rumsfeld. Not Dick Cheney. Not Paul Wolfowitz. Not Doug Feith. And none of their camp followers. None.”
Zakheim modestly leaves out … himself. Yet he has long been a key link in the chain that has bound Republican policymakers to that noxious little sect known as the neoconservatives.
Alongside the very neocons he denies have any influence in RomneyWorld, Zakheim joined the Committee for Peace and Security in the Gulf, a neocon front group organized in 1990 to support the first Gulf war: in 1998, CPSG issued a new clarion call for an invasion of Iraq addressed to President Bill, with the Usual Suspects (including Zakheim) as co-signers. Zakheim’s career as an up-and-comer in neoconservative precincts continued with the formation of the Project for a New American Century – Bill Kristol’s interventionist pressure group – on whose behalf he signed a series of open letters calling for war with Iraq. As recently as February, Zakheim continued his letter-signing spree, demanding – along with dozens of fellow neocon “camp followers” – that the President intervene in a vague-but-more-muscular fashion in Syria. In 2000, he co-authored a PNAC position paper on defense spending which called for a huge increase on the grounds that “the best defense is a good offense.” He shared credit for this proposal with Wolfowitz, Cohen, John Bolton, and Rumsfeld advisors Devon Cross and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. As Undersecretary of State and Pentagon comptroller during the Bush administration – during which time the Pentagon lost track of $1 trillion — he was a key cog in a foreign policy shop dominated by his fellow neocons.
Aside from that, however, there are plenty of neocon “camp followers” – i.e. fellow travelers, as we McCarthyites used to say - serving the Romneyite cause. I won’t bother compiling a comprehensive list, since others have taken up that task. As Ari Berman noted in The Nation way back in May:
“Romney’s team is notable for including Bush aides tarnished by the Iraq fiasco: Robert Joseph, the National Security Council official who inserted the infamous ‘sixteen words’ in Bush’s 2003 State of the Union message claiming that Iraq had tried to buy enriched uranium from Niger; Dan Senor, former spokesman for the hapless Coalition Provisional Authority under Paul Bremer in Iraq; and Eric Edelman, a top official at the Pentagon under Bush.”
And then there’s always this guy. Yes, I have in my hands a list! However, let’s brush aside Zakheim’s disingenuous denial as just another one of those “noble lies” and move along to the really interesting point (you knew we’d get to that, didn’t you?), and it is this: the neocons have gone underground! After lying us into Iraq, and acquiring a well-deserved reputation as irresponsible, arrogant, incompetent war-mongers, the neocons have fled to the catacombs, waiting for the statute of limitations to absolve them of the public’s ire.
This represents progress, of a sort: you’ll recall the neocons used to deny their very existence, disdaining the “neocon” appellation as an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory no Serious Person ought to repeat. That clearly hasn’t worked, however, and the record of the Bush years leaves them in the untenable position of Zakheim and his fellow “advisors,” who have to resort to denying the undeniable.
In the public mind, the word “neocon” is unalterably associated with war, and further: with a losing, futile, disastrous war. For any candidate for the presidency to be associated with them and their failed policies is electoral poison. No wonder they’ve gone back into the closet, so to speak, although they certainly have not folded up their tents and stolen into the night: far from it, as their penetration of RomneyWorld underscores.
What the neocons are hoping to get out of Romney is the same sort of hegemony they enjoyed during the Bush era: after all, how hard would it be to fill the empty vessel of Romney’s mind just as they did Dubya’s? In order to get into that position, however, it’s necessary to utilize stealth tactics, and Zakheim (as well as his candidate) understands that. Far from being nonplussed over Romney’s Gandhi imitation during the foreign policy debate, the neocons hailed his performance, with Charles Krauthammer proffering this advice:
“Don’t quarrel. Speak softly. Meet the threshold.”
The bombing will come later.
I’ll say right here and now that Romney is on course to a well-earned defeat, although I’ll refrain from calling it a landslide. I’m with Nate Silver on the numbers. Romney’s personal characteristics and history aside, what might have made a difference for the Republicans was a candidate who deviated from neoconservative foreign policy orthodoxy. It wouldn’t even have to have been a candidate as relatively radical as Ron Paul: someone along the lines of Paul’s faded carbon copy of a son would have sufficed.
As it is, the GOP will be dragged down to defeat by the same neocons whose policies pushed us to the brink of bankruptcy and made us hated around the world. Will Republicans walk away from this election having learned their lesson? I have my doubts: after all, they don’t call the GOP the Stupid Party for nothing.

If we had strict truth in advertising laws when it comes to political campaigns, Obama's "Hope and Change" mantra from 2008 would really be "George W. Bush 2.0." Obama's 2012 motto, "Forward," would be corrected to "Bend over, here it comes again."
I'm not even sure how to mock the pathetic Romney campaign, whose candidate is the most transparent, feckless empty suit imaginable. How about, "I'm a Goldman Sachs robot. Vote for me." Yeah, pretty weak. I'll give it some more thought.

If anything Obama has been as bad or worse then Bush. Romney can't be any worse. I expect his Neocons to be kept in the basement of the Executive office building writing memos that are shredded before they can do much damage. We have a war criminal for President. To vote for him is to vote for a war criminal. Romney may be a potential war criminal, but Obama is already a died in the wool murderer of many people. Romney if elected, can follow Bush and Obama over the cliff as warmonger and criminal. Or he can change course and liquidate the wars and a lot more of the Federal Government. One thing Romney has shown himself to be is a great liquidator and bean counter. The wars don't add up if you want to be a sucessful President. Obama has been a total failure in both domestic and foreign policy, as well as being a murderer and criminal. In no way does he deserve another term. I expect the election to be very close. We will see if Justin is right or I am.

I don't see a huge difference between the US bombing Syria so Israel can bomb Iran with bunker busters the US provided them vs. the US bombing Iran directly…. Obama is doing serious damage to the "Antiwar"/"non-intervention" cause…much more than Bush….it's just not as "visible" (for several reasons) and/or realized at present.

Completely agree with Johnny in Wi. I cannot grasp how an Antiwar site can back a notorious, unrepentant mass murderer who even makes tasteless jokes about it. I'll give Romney the benefit of the doubt. He is yet to become a war criminal, Obama is already one. Voting him for a second term not only is giving him a blank check to do even worse, it is giving a blank check to any psycho killer in the world. Plus, expect all those peace-loving liberals to voice a little more opposition if the killing is not done by their guy.

Great article, thanks for your patience to learn and inform us about what these flies ( neocons) are doing. How they (neocons) are ready to sacrifice everything in the name of democracy, sorry, not in the name of democracy but in the name of the Jewish democracy.Indeed now these flies are more and more exposed by media.Even Maureen Dowd from NYT dared to speak about them. However it is not enough and because it is not enough they (the flies)are daring to act and influence even now.The involvement of the big demagogue Bibi, without shame ,in US elections a a prove of this.Again ,thanks for your effort to thwart warmongers to rule in public discussions on the "necessity"of wars ,and necessity to let always a threat of war as the disgusting slogan used against Iran:"all the possibilities are on the table"I Hope that other will join you and a critique mass of opponents to war will impose collaboration instead of actual dictate by force.

So this SECOND Triulluion seem,s to have gone "muissing" on his watch too ADDING UIP to $3.2OO,OOO,OOO,OOO,OO or $12, OOO.OO for every man, woman and child in America………
Odd that Romney would involve someone who "LOST" more money than anyone in [American?] history………. in his campaign…. Hey, the sheeple only know who won the last last game…… But Dov's central role in so much missing money should raiuse at least a few questions…… Whatwould happen to you or I if we lost one millionth of this amount….One millionth of $3.2 trillion is ……….. $3.2OO,OOO.OO… OR Three million two hundred thousand dollars……

"I'm a Goldman Sachs robot. Vote for me."
You could just as well be mocking Obama.
Both candidates are surrounded by warmongers who are surrounded by profiteers. There's no evidence that Obama won't accelerate his wars (without Congressional approval) once he's firmly ensconced in office. With no worries about facing the public in four years, he'll do all the damage he can for the profiteers, and then he can sail on out of office and make money giving speeches to select private groups.
With Romney maybe we can buy some time, and Mitt doesn't have the charisma to become a Teflon president.
Vote for a third party candidate and let the die-hard Democrats and Republicans get the candidate they deserve. If you commit to either candidate, you'll find yourself defending them, and that is beyond what a human being should have to bear.

so your argument is i'll take the devil i don't know vs. the one i don't. while i can see the logic here to some extent, i'm not sure i really agree. the invasion of iraq was the biggest epic fail of u.s. foreign policy in american history. the same architects of this disaster are now like vampires coming back out of the woodwork with the same agenda and a bigger prize on the block: iran.
obama's libya op and predator drones are despicable. there's no question of this. the question to my mind is: will mitt stop this or make it much worse. i'm going with the latter. he's an imbecile of the highest magnitude. his slavishness politically to israel is matched by his bizarre religious obligations to that plucky little welfare queen. he's advocated increasing the defense/pentagon budget by two trillions MORE dollars than present. insane. china and russia are enemies in mitt's world. i'm not sure after watching romney run the most disingenuous campaign in history how anyone could vote for this guy. what exactly his is plan besides further decimating the poor at the expense of the rich? how will he create jobs? like he used when he sent them to china and india? you should copy and paste your post and come back to it in 2016 after WWIII and then see how you feel.

Are you kidding?
Most people who are "conservatives" absolutely, positively LOVE the fact that Romney has all of these fanatical, extremist zionist (let’s have another war and spill more American blood for the benefit of Israel) Israel Firster advisors (many of whom are likely duel citizens, and put a foreign country ahead of America), as this is one of the main core “values” of the modern day "conservatives," is it not? On the other hand, liberal robotic apologists (Obomber can do NO wrong! and you are a freaking racist if you say so!) of their Dear Leader, Obomber, will and have NOT touched this with a thousand foot pole, NOT criticizing Romney's extremist zionist backers, but have bragged about how Obomber is ALSO always putting Israel first! (I think that if they actually saw their Dear Leader Obomber on live TV eating a Baby, they would say as they ALWAYS do, well, Bush really messed up the country in the past 8 years, and well, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah….)
Anyway, what has Justin been reading or heard that says otherwise (too many Paleo or libertarian sites may cloud your judgment) about "conservatives," "right-wingers" or Republicans? And they DO love the fact that Bush went to war in Iraq (go to ANY "conservative" website or blog), and they absolutely 100% STILL back Bush on EVERYTHING including the Iraq war (especially the Iraq war! They even say that Iraq DID have WMDs, and insist that they were actually found, or that he actually gave them to Syria – how convenient), and are 100% proud that Bush and America attacked Iraq because they were after all evil, despicable, satanic "Mooslims" who worship Iblis/Lucifer (yes, they all believe that all Muslims are evil, satanic, despicable devil worshipers that are responsible basically for all of the ills of the world… They are now saying that Hitler was in essence, for all intense purposes, really a “Muslim!”)
They almost down to a man (or woman) also believe that Obomber is fanatically "anti-American" (because he allegedly doesn't put Israel first (what effing kind of logic is this?!) although we know he DOES), fanatically anti-Semitic, and worst of all, a heinous, repugnant, devil worshiping "Mooslim," who ONLY has loyalty to foreigners (Muslims) and not Americans, and that he is not slaughtering enough evil, satanic “Mooslims,” because as they see it, he is a Muslim loving, anti-American, Marxist, peacenik, PACIFIST!
If you try to reason with one of these "conservatives" saying NO, Obomber is a “Christian,” and NOT a Muslim, and IS killing and slaughtering Muslims including women, old men, and children by the THOUSANDS, and that he is a certified war criminal that would even make their hero W blush, and that he is trashing the Constitution not because he is an evil “Mooslim,” but because he has signed off on the NDAA, and extensions of the Patriot act, and other, very anti-constitutional provisions that completely trash the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, turning America into a Police State…. they will say he is only doing this to “appear” to be more pro-American (by trashing the freaking Constitution?!?!) and that he’s an evil Pacifist and Appeaser for not spilling more American blood for a foreign country! (Although after the selection, er, election, if Obomber is chosen, he mostly likely will…)

You know it would be one thing if Romney would throw us just a little bone, a tiny little chicken bone even, anything. Say something critical of Obama's civil liberties record, say something critical of Obama's use of drones. Anything. Then you might have a legitimate debate on Romney possibly being better. But Romney doesn't. Instead he lets out bilge about bringing back more torture (as if it ever fully went away).
I can see the logic in the argument of a devil we don't know as well. It's logical but it is very thin gruel. It's hoping someone who gives no signs of being better will be better, it's possible, but is it likely? They could also be worse.

To the Obama worshipping liberals. No sir. I am not American. I do not vote in American elections. But I see that Romney has toned down his bellicosity and I see that neocons dare not speak their true mind. And I see that Obama is proud of his killing record. So I conclude that the Republican American electorate is made of better people than the Democrat American electorate. As for those who claim that Bush has killed more than Obama, I oppose the fact that Clinton has killed more than Bush, and I oppose that you are oblivious of the Libyan disaster and of its spill over into Mali, and I oppose that the sanctions against Iran and I oppose that Bush has killed in a less cowardly way than both Clinton and Obama. And Romney has killed no one yet. And if he kills, he is more likely to provoke much more outrage among conservatives than Obama has ever provoked among liberals. And FYI, the US politicians who inspire me sympathy are Ron Paul, Gary Johnson and Jill Stein. Romney definitely inspires me no sympathy. I'll write here what I've written elsewhere, the one guy Obama's mindset reminds me of is Slobodan Milosevic. Same art of rhetoric to fool wishful thinking fools, same ideological blindness, same cowardice. Though I am not absolutely certain that I am not insulting Milosevic's memory when I compare Obama to him. And not only does Obama's mindset remind me of that of Milosevic, his followers remind me of Milosevic's followers too. People who refuse to see, in spite of all the evidence presented to them, how criminal is their beloved leader are as criminal as he is.
And if I feel compelled to give my opinion about an election I normally wouldn't give a damn about, it is because you Americans, of the liberal ilk especially, feel compelled to tell us what we should think and how we should behave. You Americans of the liberal ilk are the ones who export their illiteracy. I give a damn about what happens in America because you sow chaos around the world. Especially you, of the liberal ilk, who can succeed in life only through deceit and propaganda, using other people's money, for they can't with natural talent or intelligence.

In my mind, a liberal is a person with empathy for all others and a deep genuine love of fairness to all. Also, liberals are always open-minded and welcome new ideas. To me, war-mongers can never be called "liberal".
Of course, the Reagenesqe conservatives have done their own defition of "liberal", i.e. a boob who puts all of his faith in a fascist government. And the confusion increases from the Zionist Presses' cunning – associating "liberal" with some bloody harpy like Hillary or Albright, or calling some "go along to get along smoothie" like Obama, a liberal; their purposes being to annoint useful idiots with some title other than "Zionist T(F)ool".
For my edification, please define "liberal"

Well, my apology, Richard. Your remark is of course completely right. I concede that I rather refer to the true liberals you describe as progressive. Though I myself feel offended when people refer to armaggedonite nut balls as Christian.

Dov Zakheim? Couldn't find anyone named Tom Smith or Jane Jones to do Dov's job? So comptroller of the Pentagon has now become a job no American wants? This stinks to high heaven, and $20 says Zakheim knows where the bodies are buried.

Dude, realize that with either candidate we’re going to have to eat a big sh-t sandwich. Meet the new boss….same as the old boss.
Too bad there are so many idiots in this country. They could have had Ron Paul. Guess they prefer that sh-t sandwich.

These "Christians" believe Muslims wish to install some world wide caliphate while at the same time believing themselves that once Israel's borders reach from the Nile to the Euphrates the rapture will finally begin!
Yikes.

Great discussion here and more rational than what goes on on most sites (pat yourselves on the back).
At the end of the day you're all right. Both candidates are liars, war mongers, in the employ of the FED and Goldman Sachs, and will perpetuate atrocious war crimes.
That being the case, let me just chime in in support of the "devil I know" philosophy. While I won't be voting at all, since I don't consent to the system or process itself, I'm still hoping that, if we have to have either one at all, we get more Obama. But only because, in being the devil we know, there will be less surprises and collateral damage. Sad that it has come to this though…
