‘Science’ and America’s Police State
Phony scientist rationalizes latest TSA outrage
So, you’re sick and tired of being hassled by Transportation “Security” Administration (TSA) thugs, who fondle your “junk” and force 95-year-old grandmothers to take off their adult diapers?
Well, that’s tough – because it’s about to get worse.
Since 2006, the TSA has been developing a $1 billion program called “Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques” [.pdf] (SPOT) whose proponents – notably, one Rafi Ron, an Israeli airline security “expert” – claim it enables screeners to detect dangerous passengers via nonverbal signals, including facial expressions. The program is undergoing a test run, starting today [Tuesday] at Boston’s Logan airport. So before you wrinkle your nose at that Epsilon-Minus Semi Moron rifling through your suitcase, please be aware that the “micro-expressions” you exhibit can and will be held against you.
As the TSA gropers assaulted Americans at airports, the outraged response of the public was taken up by some conservatives, who promptly declared that we need to organize our air safety campaign along Israeli lines – and now they’ve gotten their wish. Which just goes to underscore the old aphorism about being careful what you wish for.
Because what the Israelis do is pry and probe into every aspect of every airline passengers’ life: questions about their politics as well as their itinerary, about personal issues – you name it. Indeed, every passenger aboard the El Al state-owned Israeli airline is subjected to an extensive interrogation, but it’s hard to see how the relatively small-scale Israeli operation is going to be implemented in the US, which deals with multi-millions of airline passengers every day. The Boston Herald, however, gives us a preview:
“Under the SPOT program, as passengers hand over their boarding passes and identification, specially trained agents will ask three to four questions — from ‘Where have you been?” to “Do you have a business card?” and “Where are you traveling?” — while looking for “micro expressions,” such as lack of eye contact, that might hint at nefarious intent.
“Suspicious individuals will be pulled aside for more questioning, full-body scans and pat-downs. If the encounter escalates, agents will call in state police.”
If you fail to look that plug-ugly TSA moron in the face, and meet his beady-eyed gaze head on, you can look forward to a full-scale assault, which – don’t forget – could “escalate” if you bat an eyelid, in which case the Fullerton Police Department will be called in to do to you what they did to Kelly Thomas.
Oh, but don’t worry, folks:
“At Logan, about 70 agents — all with college degrees — are undergoing training by an international consulting firm that includes a four-day classroom course and 24 hours of on-the-job experience, said TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis.”
College degrees? Well, then, never mind: it’s all going to be okay.
Speaking of college degrees, the “theory” behind this nonsense is based on the work of Paul Ekman, a clinical psychologist, who originated the SPOT training program. According to Ekman, human facial expressions are not learned behavior, but innate reactions – instincts – which are universal. He’s got it narrowed down to expressions signaling anger, disgust, sadness, joy, fear, and surprise. Wikipedia notes that “findings on contempt are less clear, though there is at least some preliminary evidence that this emotion and its expression are universally recognized.” Contempt is the reaction of most scientists to the Ekman theory, exemplified by the authors of this scientific paper, who debunked Ekman’s claims and averred that one would get better results “flipping a coin” than utilizing Ekman’s methods. With Dr. Maureen O’Sullivan, Ekman initiated the so-called Wizards Project, which “tested” 20,000 people, concluding that only 50 of them were what Ekman calls “Truth Wizards,” i.e., those who have the natural ability to spot liars without going through his training program.
C’mon, all you Truth Wizards out there – there’s a job at the TSA waiting for you!
Ekman’s “Facial Action Coding System” is just the sort of scientistic mysticism governments are inherently in favor of: its presumption of certainty and schematic reductionism is typical of the sort of “systems” favored by government bureaucrats, who love to believe – have to believe – they can understand the infinite complexity of human beings – when in fact they don’t have a clue. Just as some addle-brained “economist” of the modern school thinks he can reduce human economic interactions to a few mathematical formulas, so the “scientists” over at the TSA think they can map the human mind with a glance and a few impertinent questions. Such “scientific” hocus-pocus is laughable – and you’re paying for it, in more ways than one.
Until and unless the United States government stops killing, torturing, and otherwise enraging the world outside our borders, we will be forced to subject ourselves to increasingly intrusive police state tactics by our own “protectors” every time we get on a plane, a train, or, indeed, travel anywhere further than the corner store. Of course, Washington will never give up its prerogative to invade and slaughter overseas, so we’ll be treated like cattle here on the home front – and don’t you dare complain about those cattle prods.

Travellers are advised to make sure that they are not carrying an unsympathetic facial aspect when passing through Immigration.
Tel Aviv has succeeded in shaping the US world view entirely according to its needs, and its wars with its neighbours are now the property of the US. If you don't like it, then keep your opinions to yourself and under no circumstances must you allow your face to betray you. Or else.

Here we go. The israelization of US airports in full march. What's next, they're going to stare at goats, er, suspicious looking people to see if they'll make them drop dead? Well, if an israeli "experts" says this works, then how can it not? Just look how successful the israeli trained security folks were in Amsterdam at not catching the underwear "bomber." I guess this means that if you are insecure, depressed, anxious, suffer from panic attacks, or are just in a hurry, or nervous about flying (and there a whole lot of Americans that suffer from these conditions), then the T&A has a surprise for you. Better don't forget to take your Xanax, if you're lucky enough to have a job and insurance. Or does being lethargic and sleepy also qualify you for special T&A treatment? What if you purposely make faces at the T&A goon? How quickly a country can go under. No job, no money, no health insurance, no retirement. Not enough? But there's more! Expensive, ridiculous invasions, occupations bombings abroad and constant abuse by the government at home. McCain – Pistole 2012!!!

Ever wonder where psychoanalysis went? Or all the psychobabble that was so popular? Ever wonder how it was so believed, and then it sort of disappeared? Because it had served its purpose? "Don't examine an irrationality, ask what it accomplishes." (or words to that effect) This kind of TSA scrutiny has already broken down physical boundaries. In the past, we could expect privacy unless we waived it in the doctor's office or got arrested based on reasonable suspicion. We didn't get groped in a mass processing way. That was for cattle and communists in Russia (or the "masses" who were unlucky enough to live there). "On a wagon, bound for market, there's a calf with a mournful eye." Well, that's you buddy. And you thought that folksong was an anthem about universal freedom. Think again. So our expectations have changed and we don't like it. The cure? Specially trained omniscience. And it's probably very expensive. What does it accomplish? Less flying? Or who knows… yet.

1. The problem with an Israeli "expert" lecturing Americans on behavioral signs is that unlike Americans, when it comes to body language — that is, non-verbal communication — Israelis are for the most part clueless.
If body language can be likened to spoken language, one that Americans speak fluently and are sensitive and attentive to its subtle cues, Israelis are stuttering, bumbling boors. That includes Ashkenazi J.e.w.s from Europe, as well.
One of the most revealing tell-tale signs is the one where many Israelis put their weight onto one leg when they're standing. That is an indicator of a lack of confidence. Another one is the crossed-arms, or the leaning on or against fixtures — 'sloppy' body language. I could go to any airport in the US and easily point out the Israeli travelers standing in line without even hearing them speak.
The point is, when it comes to behavioral cues, Israelis are the last bunch to be lecturing Americans on such matters. Then, of course, there's the issue of cultural differences. Personal space, for example, is completely different for an Israeli. So, what is this Israeli "expert" going to teach Americans? Is he an "expert" on frowning or smug smirks?
This latest initiative is simply another sign of how American media have indoctrinated and brainwashed Americans into thinking that Israelis are the Rambos, the MacGyvers or the A-Teams of security. It's also a sign of the shameless contracting practices the US government engages in, where any idiot can claim to be an "expert" and be put on the payroll. Michael Chertoff — a Zionist — certainly has a lot to answer for the access he has granted many an Israeli contractor. Clinton opened the door for these Israeli contractors, but Chertoff opened the flood-gates. And, Janet Napolitano's policies give the impression that she has been getting her instructions from Jack Bauer.

Justin,
The system is quite different.
I'll limit this response to El-Al so as to keep it relevant, but one should also familiarize oneself with Israel's entire concept/understanding of security and airport screening. It is a failed concept, by the way, because Israel cares very little for individual rights or freedoms and is largely a homogeneous society with the majority being J.e.w.s. From a practical perspective, the United States cannot implement the same system of ethnic/racial/religious profiling.
Anyway, when it comes to El-Al, there are three types of passengers; first there are J.e.w.s. A J.e.w.ish passenger arrives at the ticket counter in a European airport, he/she is checked in and directed to the El-Al gate.
At the gate, El-Al's own security will ask the passenger some basic questions. If that passenger is J.e.w.ish, especially if he is an Israeli J.e.w, that passenger will face no further questioning.
The second type of passenger is the non-J.e.w.ish, mostly Christian passenger that may or may not raise suspicion depending on his or her past solidarity with anything resembling Arab or Islam.
The third type, or more accurately, category, includes anyone who is of Arab descent or one whom the Israeli security personnel suspect is a Muslim.
In such instances, that person will not only be questioned, multiple times, by different agents, but every single item of his belongings will be inspected, separately, screened, swabbed, and inspected again.
Then that person is ordered to enter into a booth where he or she will have to strip naked and submit to either a thorough 'fondling' or a cavity search. You read that right.
99.9999% of Israelis who travel on El-Al are J.e.w.ish and they are politely told "Have a safe flight" after answering a couple of basic questions like, "What is your destination?" and, "How many bags are you taking with you?"
The few unlucky ones who happen to be Israeli citizens, but are not J.e.w.ish and choose El-Al for its reduced rates — depending on the season — are humiliated and violated every which way.

When my grandfather used to walk home from work through a tough neighborhood he just kept his eyes staright ahead and made no facial expressions at anyone. This is turning into a police state where everyone has to bury their opinions and expressions if they want to stay away from the minders. To hell with all of that lets push for people to resist peacefully with mass arrests and marches. Of course I am too much of a coward to do that myself.

I opted out at Detroit a few weeks back and was surprised I was felt up by a TSA employee who seemed almost human. That's more than I can say about the three troglodytes, two males and a female, who were waiting at the boarding area to do a second search of carry-on luggage. It was like choosing up sides in some perverse school yard game where the agents randomly (?) pointed at someone to inflict extra humiliation on.

You know, I hate to say it, it should be obvious … As long as people take this crap, there will be no end to it.
Since there is no chance that a significant number of people will just not go there, (enough to make the business interests beg for mercy) – as long a they can keep the airports busy moving sheep – this will continue to get more and more bizarre and uncomfortable. (It's far more serious than that of course)
Take a pill and bend over? How about just making the whole thing die? There is not enough business travel to keep it going.
But who am I kidding? Americans take a moral stand or stiffen up their backbones? NOT A CHANCE!

This so-called Israeli "analyst' came to fame when his subordinates caught a pregnant Irish woman traveling from the UK to Israel to get married to her Muslim boy friend in Israel. it is a no-brainer to finger this passenger. However, he portrayed this incident as his greatest success. He appeared on TV shows congratulating himself on his ability to catch a hotel maid who happened to be Christian. (This woman was a dupe for her boyfriend and turned out NOT to be a terrorist!!) You need no training in security to figure this one out.
Two months ago, an Israeli passenger arriving JFK from Tel Aviv was caught with a loaded gun and ammunition in his carry on. If this guy is an "expert" how come his trainees at Tel-Aviv Airport did not detect the gun but instead allowed the passenger to board the plane to JFK? So much for expertise.

Be careful what you wish for and be careful what you go along with just so people won't call you a conspiracy theorist kook. This was – OBVIOUSLY – inevitable from going along with the fantastic story that 19 Muslim religious zealot amateur hijackers foiled the FBI, FAA, NORAD, CIA, all the world's intelligence agencies AND got through security at 4 airports simultaneously, without a hitch and without any support, not a single look out person to guide them. Then they took over 4 flight crews without a protest from the captains and co-pilots even.
What would anyone expect from going along with that story other than what has happened? Demonization of Muslims worldwide, wars and killing Muslims, and the most expensive, harassing airport security they can come up with. Whatever they can think up, whatever machines they can come up with – next up one that sniffs you for anxiety secretions – they'll do it.

What you are saying debunks the notion that they are doing something ground-breaking in Israel on passenger screening. It is actually your basic shibboleth system, from ancient times. Thanks for clarifying things, and putting the whole thing in perspective. I actually have a good eye (I think) for shoplifters and security people. I can spot them in a crowd. One day forced to wait for a late flight, I picked out a guy sloppily eating a sandwich while leaning against a trash can. He was communicating with another guy on the opposite side of the room. I said to myself they were security, but not American-type, and it unnerved me until I heard the announcement that an El-Al flight was pulling up to the gate: these were Israelis there to provide security to the El-Al passengers as they debarked (at Logan Airport, Boston). If I could pick them out of a crowd, who else could? Do they even perform a useful service for El-Al, if they are so visible to an amateur like myself? I guess it comes from my waitress days and predicting who would and would not tip – or from spending those years on the playground at American public schools. Whatever, I read body language like a native.

and so the insanity continues unabated. why don't we just start reading the bumps on passengers heads as i'm sure we'll find many a stage coach jilter or highway men in line. i have to fly a fair share for my job and haven't had any problems truth be told. i opted out at LAX and the pat down i got was similar to a police pat down, but never did they "go down my pants" or any thing like that. i wouldn't have allowed it. its important when confronted by these clowns that you remain calm but also let them know that you are in charge i.e. a citizen with rights. after being pulled aside i made them first explain what they are doing and then i gave them my consent. the guy looked at me a bit strange, but he knew that if he groped me there would be issues. again, i made no threats and calmly acknowledged his explanation. these are people after all, and the vast majority don't want problems or hassles where they work. moreover the typical bully doesn't like people who stand up to them. had he said he was going down my pants i was going to request a police officer. if you present yourself as a strong and confident person 9 times out of 10 they are going to leave you alone. its not surprising to me that they often single out old people, women, and children as these are the most compliant persons.

Quite right! The entire United States response to international terrorism has been defined by Tel Aviv, not to mention the mandatory distortions of US foreign relationships with countries that are either Muslim or just might harbor large numbers of people who dislike Israel. It's amazing how Israel has so many security experts who seem to be able to pick up these lucrative contracts both at state and federal levels. I wonder how the contracting process works and who gets to decide who gets the money. Hmmmm.

Regarding the use of "signals" in politics, and prepared viewpoints, and "leaked" (some official speaking off record) interviews.
Has any serious research been made, that tried to measure the noise effect of such things? That people were now off any ground in their sincere evaluations of life and truth? One effect is of course the ever growing deficits with absolutely no one responsible or anybody becoming responsible. Do Americans sincerely accept torture and civilian killings at will with those lack of convictions? Do you next want to copyright those great findings of manipulation and lack of accountability produced by the USA?
Yeah! Maybe that is the next great income possibility for the USA! Of course a little lacking in real life quality will become missed. But the well being of the present population becomes guaranteed!

If I were to hazard a guess on this one, it's that the Mossad front that is El Al wanted to "test" Amerkan airport "security" to see if they would intercept the weapon. When the simi-morons at JFK masquerading as "security personnel" failed, as expected, to do so, the Mossad then had an excuse to have one of its "security consulting firm" fronts step in and con the ever-gullible Amoricon government into paying it to pretend to enhance airport "security" with the oppressive, pointless, costly, liberty-shredding nonsense we now see falling into place.
