This Shameful Abuse of Bradley Manning
President Obama tells us that he’s asked the Pentagon whether the conditions of confinement of Bradley Manning, the soldier charged with leaking state secrets, "are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards. They assure me that they are."
If Obama believes that, he’ll believe anything. I would hope he would know better than to ask the perpetrators whether they’ve been behaving appropriately. I can just hear President Nixon saying to a press conference the same thing: "I was assured by the the White House Plumbers that their burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s doctor in Los Angeles was appropriate and met basic standards."
When that criminal behavior ordered from the Oval Office came out, Nixon faced impeachment and had to resign. Well, times have changed. But if President Obama really doesn’t yet know the actual conditions of Manning’s detention – if he really believes, as he’s said, that "some of this [nudity, isolation, harassment, sleep-deprivation] has to do with Private Manning’s wellbeing", despite the contrary judgments of the prison psychologist – then he’s being lied to, and he needs to get a grip on his administration.
If he does know, and agrees that it’s appropriate or even legal, that doesn’t speak well for his memory of the courses he taught on constitutional law.
The president refused to comment on PJ Crowley’s statement that the treatment of Manning is "ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid". Those words are true enough as far as they go – which is probably about as far as a state department spokesperson can allow himself to go in condemning actions of the defense department. But at least two other words are called for: abusive and illegal.
Crowley was responding to a question about the "torturing" of an American citizen, and, creditably, he didn’t rebut that description. Prolonged isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity – that’s right out of the manual of the CIA for "enhanced interrogation". We’ve seen it applied in Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib. It’s what the CIA calls "no-touch torture", and its purpose there, as in this case, is very clear: to demoralize someone to the point of offering a desired confession. That’s what they are after, I suspect, with Manning. They don’t care if the confession is true or false, so long as it implicates WikiLeaks in a way that will help them prosecute Julian Assange.
That’s just my guess, as to their motives. But it does not affect the illegality of the behavior If I’m right, it’s likely that such harsh treatment wasn’t ordered at the level of a warrant officer or the brig commander. The fact that they have continued to inflict such suffering on the prisoner despite weeks of complaint from his defense counsel, harsh publicity and condemnation from organizations such as Amnesty International, suggests to me that it might have come from high levels of the defense department or the justice department, if not from the White House itself.
It’s no coincidence that it’s someone from the state department who has gone off-message to speak out about this. When a branch of the US government makes a mockery of our pretensions to honor the rule of law, specifically our obligation not to use torture, the state department bears the brunt of that, as it affects our standing in the world.
The fact that Manning’s abusive mistreatment is going on at Quantico – where I spent nine months as a Marine officer in basic school – and that Marines are lying about it, makes me feel ashamed for the Corps. Just three years as an infantry officer was more than enough time for me to know that what is going on there is illegal behavior that must be stopped and disciplined.

The sad thing is that the American people know all about one of their own being tortured by the state – and they approve. Of course, these are the same people who cheered on Bush's torture chambers….

On 2 March 2011, CBS Radio News chief legal analyst Andrew Cohen reported that military officials look like they want to throw the book at Manning, not just to punish him, but also to send a message to other service members who may be tempted to do what Manning allegedly did.
On 27 January 2011, McClatchy Newspapers reported that Bradley Manning’s, direct supervisor warned that Manning had thrown chairs at colleagues and shouted at higher-ranking soldiers in the year he was stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y., and advised he not be sent to Iraq, where his job entailed accessing classified documents through the Defense Department's computer system. But superior officers ignored that advice because the unit was short of intelligence analysts and needed Manning's skills.
“An Army report into the service's high suicide rate concluded in July that military commanders had become so focused on training troops for deployment that they no longer had the time to address issues such as alcoholism, prescription drug abuse and even violence, and instead hoped they'd disappear in combat…The result was a ‘comedy of errors’ as one commander after another assumed someone else was addressing Manning's problems, one official said.”
In 2002, President Bush declared U.S. citizen, Jose Padilla an enemy combatant and he was stripped of all rights and detained at a Navy brig in South Carolina where he was held in solitary isolation for 43 months and denied access to an attorney for two years. Forensic Psychiatrist Angela Hegarty examined Padilla [in 2006] and concluded the extreme isolation and torture had left Padilla essentially brain damaged, "What happened at the brig was essentially the destruction of a human being's mind."
In this video interview with the Whistle Blower of Israel's WMD Program, Mordechai Vanunu illuminates WHY governments use Solitary confinement to torture trouble makers and truth tellers:

"Shameful abuse" in the very least. Immoral, disgraceful, unconstitutional and golly can we remember when these United States had a Constitution, dishonorable, outrageous, and I'd really like to throw in a listing of the vulgar unprintable words but I'll cease and desist.

A good analysis by Daniel. That said,
as a 1964 U.S. Army length of service military retiree who served this deceitful, thankless and unforgiving nation during and over three major engagements, in combat, and a dozen minor conflagrations on the low draft-era pay and non-existent allowances only to be BETRAYED along with 432,000 cohorts on future retired pay, and loss of our "earned" life-time health care this nation's military is a farce.
Release Pfc Manning today.

It's time to speak up on the issue of the conspicuously absent player in this Bradley Manning affair. The conspicuously absent player I'm referring to is the u.s. mainstream media (hereinafter: m.s.m.). Consider for a moment what the m.s.m. would be reporting if the leaks Mr. Manning is accused of were adversely affecting a republican administration. The m.s.m. would be calling his detention unlawful and his mistreatment would be openly called torture. If the reputations of republicans were hanging in the balance, Mr. Manning would be portrayed as a hero in the m.s.m. and his actions would be praised by every pundit as most patriotic indeed. The m.s.m. would never relent in its quest to destabilise a republican administration.
However, since the actions Mr. Manning is accused of are having adverse effects on a democrat administration, the m.s.m. is silent on his obvious mistreatment. Furthermore, while they remain silent on his mistreatment, they are at the ready to promote ANY government manufactured propaganda against Mr. Manning, Mr. Assange, and Wikileaks. This phenomenal bias is something that may have worked to Mr. Ellsberg's benefit (none of what's written here is meant to disparage Mr. Ellsberg or to make light of the difficulties he endured as a result of his acts). In his case, a republican administration was being exposed and destroyed. Thus, the m.s.m. was in destruction mode and was an active player.
Mr. Ellberg's assertion "Well, times have changed." may be technically true. However, what drives the m.s.m. to either attack or to constrain itself has nothing to do with the simple passage of time. They consistently attack republican administrations and they consistently protect and bolster democrat administrations. Please don't misunderstand my position; I consider american republican administrations and american democrat administrations to both be nothing more than opposite sides of the same counterfeit coin. My intention here is to draw attention to the fact that the american m.s.m. is, for all intents and purposes, nothing more than the propaganda branch and attack dog of the american democrat party – whether that party is in control of the whitehouse or not.
Mr. Manning, unfortunately, has put the reputation of a democrat administration at risk. Because of this, the m.s.m. will never recognise any of the abuses / torture he is forced to endure. Nor will he ever be portrayed in the m.s.m. as innocent until proven guilty. Just an observation…

America no longer operates within the framework of the law. It is a rogue nation, one that is, ironically, trying to lead/control the world.
American imperialism knows no boundaries. It thinks it can order the whole world around.
Let's put America in its place before its evilness corrupts the whole world.

And just who owns and controls the MSM?
That is the key and the rabbit hole which ultimately explains all.
Americans have no control over their nation or its internal and external policies.
Look to the appalling treatment of the Palestinians and even the Khazars own people in their occupied part of Palestine.
Explains the treatment of Bradley Manning.
We know who actually calls the shots.
Shame is the Americans are too ignorant, apathetic and/or cowardly to rise up like some in North Africa and liberate their nation from foreign and plain evil occupation and control.

Another motive for the insane over the top treatment of Manning could be to instill FEAR into the hearts of how many thousands of Manning-types operating the intelligence and military networks. In combination with Wikileaks a potentially way bigger and lethal leak could easily be created. How many of the young and intelligent colleagues of Manning would be sympathetic right now to the Wikileaks cause? What will they do when they see certain information and realize there's now a way to safely, fast and anonymously publish the lot? (knowing Manning was caught only by his own confession to a stranger). The only thing they need is courage. In my opinion this fear of a "chain reaction" is the reason for the witch hunt we're seeing. Fear used as containment of the *idea*

It seams that there is the habits of presidents to change their saying when they talk about a good changes, yet all of the sudden their words changes and become abusive when they take office.
President Obama, is yet another but wait more is to come when Senator Kerry or Lieberman puts up their services for presidency. Here the question needs to be.., why would they change and why its not considered as a lie where such a lies needs to be prosecuted where president not obeying the constitution when they have swear to follow the constitution. Is that democracy or a falsified one by those whom love to lie to please the US militarism regime.

Not really the MSM will demonize anyone who threatens EITHER branch of the MIC enriching war party, remember how from NPR to Fox they cheered Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq? Both parties commit horrendous wrongs with the full support of the corporate owned and controlled media.

MoT,
I appreciate the word play: "Obominator" and "Obomination", but from a purely literary point of view may I make a suggestion? Change them to either Obaminator and Obamination, or Obombinator and Obombination.

Obama has no more of a "grip on his administration" than any of the other powerless sock puppets who preceded him. Obama's "job," if you can call it that, is to keep his mouth shut until he is ordered to speak by his handlers, and even then to speak only those words put into his mouth. Any deviation from the official line, and he's toast, one way or the other.
The Unseen Puppeteers want Bradley Manning slowly tortured, tormented, and ultimately executed for his role in exposing at least some of their crimes against humanity. Obama has probably been made aware in no uncertain terms that he is to either "play ball" in making that happen, or share Manning's fate.

This solder and Assange need to be honored for what they have done, Manning needs to be given a medal of honor and be released from duty with full pay, the amount that’s been promised to him when he joined the army to be able to continue studying. I hope he will become a attorney to prosecute those whom are and working to create wars where such heroes as Manning and Assange would again continue to produce their atomicity toward mankind. President Obama so as the democratic party and others involved and Swedish government needs to be shamed of themselves repeating what is been a shameless act from Iraq to now. People whom are needed to be on the bench defending themselves are Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Pearl, Holbrook, Madeleine Albright, George W. Bush and others not this solder nor Mr. Assange.

It is blatantly obvious that the administration, including President Obama, as well as Republicans, including Senator McCain, want to publicly torture Bradley Manning to provide an object lesson to the world: mess with us and this is what will happen to you; we will destroy your mind in the most cruel and inhuman way. We will strip you naked and put you in solitary confinement. We know what solitary confinement does to the human brain and we will destroy yours, just as we are destroying Bradley Manning's brain. We wont release him from solitary confinement until he becomes psycotic. We know this works. Science has shown that solitary confinement destroys humans. And we don't have to raise a sweat doing it. Watch him become less than human; this will happen to you if you get out of line!
I have lost all respect for Obama and McCain. Shame on them. Shame on us for letting solitary confinement exist.
For information on the awful effects of solitary confinement on the brain, read the article at http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/03/30/090…
and others you will find with a Google search.
