Tea Party vs. War Party?
"We’re all on the same page until the polls close Nov. 2," Richard Viguerie, the longtime conservative strategist who has allied with the Tea Party, told the New York Times. After that, "a massive, almost historic battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party begins."
Indeed, such a battle seems unavoidable. Consider.
The great issue uniting and motivating the Republican Party and Tea Party is the deficit-debt crisis, a national debt nearing 100 percent of gross domestic product and a deficit of 10 percent of GDP.
As to the cause of the deficit that could precipitate a run on the dollar, double-digit inflation, even a default, the Tea Party and GOP also agree — federal spending that consumes 25 percent of GDP.
Both are also on the same page in their opposition to closing the deficit with new or higher taxes.
This means spending must be slashed. But to cut the budget to 20 percent of GDP, where it was before George W. Bush and Barack Obama, requires spending cuts of an astronomical $700 billion a year. Even then, the 2011 deficit would be $700 billion.
As interest on the debt must be paid, or we default, there are only two places you can find that kind of money. The first is the major entitlement programs — Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security — and social spending for education, veterans benefits, earned income tax credits and unemployment compensation.
But a Democratic Party, brutalized and bled on Nov. 2, returning to Capitol Hill with its moderate wing annihilated, is unlikely to collude with a resurgent Republican right and Tea Party caucus in hacking away at social programs that are the Democratic Party’s pride and joy, and the reason that party exists.
Which leaves one place where a bipartisan majority may be found for major spending cuts: defense and the empire, the warfare state.
The "agonizing reappraisal" of commitments abroad that John Foster Dulles predicted half a century ago may be at hand.
And here is where the Tea Party and War Party split the blanket.
If Obama makes good on his pledge of full withdrawal of the 50,000 U.S. troops in Iraq by the end of 2011, will the Tea Party and Republican right oppose that withdrawal and join the War Party in demanding that we retain an army in Iraq indefinitely?
If Obama refuses to go to war against Iran, a war that would send oil prices soaring, close the Persian Gulf and be a disaster for the global economy, will the Tea Party join the War Party in denouncing Obama for not launching a third war in the Near East?
If Obama begins his promised withdrawal from Afghanistan next July, will Tea Party Republicans join the War Party and the generals in accusing Obama of inviting an American defeat?
The neocons are nervous the Tea Party may not sign up to soldier on for the empire. Writing in the Washington Post, Danielle Pletka and Thomas Donnelly of AEI have sniffed out the unmistakable scent of "isolationism" among Tea Party favorites.
They are warning that the old right and Tea Party might unite in a "combination of Ebenezer Scrooge and George McGovern, withdrawing from the world to a countinghouse America."
Sorry, but the old neocon name-calling won’t cut it this time.
After Iraq and Afghanistan, the American people are not going to give the establishment and War Party a free hand in foreign policy. Every patriot will do what is necessary and pay what is needed to defend his country. But national security is one thing, empire security another.
Why should Americans, 65 years after World War II, be defending rich Europeans from a Soviet Union that has been dead for 20 years, so those same Europeans can cut their defense budgets to protect their social safety nets?
President Eisenhower told JFK to bring the troops home from Europe, or the Europeans would wind up as permanent wards.
Was Ike a closet isolationist?
Almost $14 trillion in debt today, we borrow from Europe to defend Europe, borrow from Japan to defend Japan, borrow from the Gulf Arabs to defend the Gulf Arabs. And we borrow from Beijing to send foreign aid to African regimes whose U.N. delegations laughed and applauded as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the General Assembly that 9/11 was an inside job by the U.S. government. Have we lost all sense of self-respect?
In his 1969 "Silent Majority" address, Richard Nixon said that, after Vietnam, America would provide Asian allies with weapons and assistance in defending their freedom. But Americans would no longer do the fighting.
Why are U.S. soldiers still on the DMZ, 57 years after the Korean War? Why are Marines still on Okinawa, 65 years after Gen. MacArthur took the surrender? Cannot Korea and Japan, prosperous and populous, conscript the soldiers for their own defense?
National security, yes. Empire security we can no longer afford.
The only problem with Sen. McGovern’s "Come home, America!" slogan was the timing.

This article contains a lot of truth. The Tea Party people are against big government and the huge waste involved. Sooner rather than later the cost of this insane foreign policy has to be faced. By 2012 these wars will as popular as cancer, in both parties. We have a sane accountant and businessman who is leading the faux antiwar candidate Russ Finegold. His favorite author is Ayn Rand and he is making a lot of sense. I expect these new people to look and hard at what is going on. Bush and Cheney are going to be rejected in the coming Republican civil war. Finegold has always had full support of the Israeli Lobby in every campaign. He has always supported the Lobbies funding wants. He may present himself to be independent but in my opinion he isn't

Nearly every Tea Party person I talk to or correspond with says that cutting the size of government DOES NOT APPLY TO THE MILITARY. They really believe it's all necessary for national defense. I know the original tea partiers were libertarians and conservatives, but the right-wing Repubs took them over very quickly. They won't help.

Buchanan writes:
"If Obama refuses to go to war against Iran, a war that would send oil prices soaring, close the Persian Gulf and be a disaster for the global economy, will the Tea Party join the War Party in denouncing Obama for not launching a third war in the Near East?"
"If Obama begins his promised withdrawal from Afghanistan next July, will Tea Party Republicans join the War Party and the generals in accusing Obama of inviting an American defeat?"
In each case the operative word is "IF." Obama will do no such thing as he has already shown. He may rebrand the effort as "advising" rather than "combat" and spend more money on "contractors," aka mercenaries, But he is as determined as Cheney to march across Central Asia and dominate it, laying it waste where necessary. This is for two reasons: to satisfy Israel and to "encircle" China (also to hem in Russia). But the US better watch out. Military means of domination may be impossible to sustain in the nuclear age. And the Chinese play Go, not chess. The great danger in Go is that as you are confidently encircling your opponent, you find yourself encircled.

Why do these righties like Buchanan and Raimondo pretend that the Tea Party is against the US imperialism? This is complete self delusion. Does any current Tea Party leader ever utter any words against military aggression? Just the opposite – Tea Partiers are flag waving warmongers. I've been to some rallies. There is a greater chance that Pat Buchanan will support La Raza and praise diversity than Tea Partiers opposing US military aggression.

Grady,
Right on. Tea Partiers are all for a "strong national defense", a code word for "not cutting the Pentagon." LIke everyone in politics, these people vote for those who will act on behalf of the tribe they belong to–namely, white, mainly uneducated, church-going believers in the traditional myths that have motivated Americans for generations: the essential goodness of Americans, their generosity, their business savvy, their Christian morality, and the skewed version of history they have been taught in their schools. Buchanan should look elsewhere if he wants to find an ally against American imperialism.

Egomaniacs of the John McCain and Lindsey Graham type are not going to be easily convinced that they shouldn't run the world. They would more easily be convinced that money grows on trees. Bankcruptcy will have to come before these jokers give up the ghost.

The problem for Americans is that, in the post-cold war world, the "warfare state" serves no purpose other than to prop up Israel. Thus, any attempt to cut back there will run into fierce opposition from the infamous Israel Lobby. And, as American power collapses, the Lobby is increasingly desperate. The point of US forces in Europe is to have them close to Israel, not to "defend" Europe, which they definitely don't do! Even if those forces were withdrawn, European countries would have no need to increase their defence budgets. Thus, viewed from outside the US, it looks like the political situation will gridlock. Conservatives will want cuts, but enough people are attached to welfare programmes to block any cuts there. The Lobby is powerful enough to block cuts in military spending. Thus, the most likely outcome is a soviet-style implosion.

I did not hear any laughter Mr. Bue'Cannon. Only weeping cries came from Israel firsters who may be exposed as the evil doers of Sept 11 2001.

John McCain and Lindsay Grahame are hated by most Tea Party people. You should read some rightwing blogs about how we feel about Karl [ Tokyo ] Rove, Bill Kristol, and Charles Krauthammer. We hate them. Buchanan is right. There is a civil war coming on the right.

Republicans were hijacked and this is deja vu, all over again.

the tea party movement has been co-opted by the corporate elite republicans. the real tea party was started by ron paul and was really about the federal reserve system. any group that has sarah palin leading it..well that's not a rally, that's a moron-athon. the republicans and democrats are criminal syndicates intent on bleeding this country dry for their corporate PAC money masters. they are succeeding. we could easily cut that 700 billion from defense over night but it's not going to happen with the fascist pigs in charge. you want change? start stockpiling food and get your ammo ready…these pigs will only understand when we make them understand.

What the hell is Mr. Buchanan talking about?! From what I've read, these tea partiers (at least the vast, overwhelming majority, and nowadays – not 2 or 3 years ago) are fanatically, totally, EXTREMELY pro-zionist, and pro-war! (That is, if it’s another crusade/war against Muslims) What is the percentage of them that are for another war for the sake of Israel/zionism and the Ziocons (the War Party), for instance, bombing the hell out of Iran? Like 99.999 percent???
I’ve have read that these Tea Partiers, their movements, and rallies, etc. are basically funded by the most bellicose, fanatic, warmongering Israel first, extremist Ziocons. (I’m not saying it was like this in the beginning of course, but obviously things have changed)
These are the same tea partiers that actually believe that Obama is REALLY A MUSLIM!!!! A “closet Moozlem”!!!! That he is “pro-Muslim.” (believe me, any Muslim with any basic knowledge of their Deen would know that he is the leader of what many consider the worldwide zionist-Crusade against Islam and Muslims)
Many of these misguided nitwit, ignorants also seem to believe that Obama (the stooge and puppet of the zionists, as are ALL politicians, save a couple here and there, like Paul, and Kucinich) is actually insufficiently PRO-ISRAEL!!!! Or PRO-ZIONIST!!!!!!
Also, many, if not the vast majority of these same ignorant, bigoted tea-partiers (again whom are all basically funded by the most extremist, warmongering Israel first/Ziocons) whom given the choice, would want to burn down and destroy all mosques in the US, and put every single American Muslim in a concentration camp, and believe that Obama is not KILLING enough Muslims on behalf of Israel, etc., etc., and they are expected to be anti-Empire, and be against the War Party???!!!
What is Mr. Buchanan smoking? Seriously!

The wars are unnecessary, our foreign policy is only a front for bullying smaller countries, and there is absolutely no sincerity in Washington on either side for any kind of peace. Hey, war is big business. You think the big banks took the US taxpayer to the cleaners? That's nothing compared to what the military is doing–with the help of warmongering politicians. We ship arms all over the world, send the CIA to destabilize countries, impose sanctions arbitrarily, and talk tough instead of diplomatically. America the bully–paid for by the clueless US taxpayer.

Anyone that is paying attention will realize that the TEA party movement, by design, has no national "leaders". The idea that Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin speak for the movement as a whole is absurd. Mr. Buchanan is correct in painting this is a sort of political civil war.
I'm part of the libertarian wing of the movement and it would be wishful thinking for me to say that the "strong defense"(aka imperialist) wing of the TEA party movement isn't a clear majority. However, it's equally unfair to characterize the whole movement as pro-war and pro-imperialsm. My best guess is that the "war party" faction is about 66% of the current movement. However, I'm optimistic that the tide IS slowly turning in our anti-war direction. No anti-war libertarians are being convinced that our militarism is a good idea, and as the body count and cost of maintaining our empire increases, more of the "strong defense" folks are having second thoughts.
Quit demeaning, insulting and stereotyping your fellow citizens!! At least they're trying to be politically active and shake up the system. The TP folks may be 2/3 "strong defense", but they're 99% "smaller government". The 2/3 need to be awakened to the fact that a worldwide military empire is antithetical to the goal of smaller government and fiscal responsibility. Logical arguments and respectful communication just might accomplish that. Insulting people with crude sexual innuendos, and labeling them as "ignorant", "racists", "extremists", etc. isn't exactly a good way to win them over to an "anti-War" message.

Loose Feingold at a peril to your already vanishing civil liberties and opposition to war. Hint Feingold was one of the only Senators who fought the (un) "Patriot Act" the rolling back of FISA, troop escalations, etc. While all pols are bastards he is one of the few bastards with any principles I can see. And I say that as a third party guy, Green party supporter.

Worthless analysis from a lifelong DC resident who claps and applauds the cheapest of Anti Muslim propaganda and who DISGRACED himself on the "Ground Zero Mosque" episode.
I've watched and read Pat Buchanan for years. He is a consummate Beltway tightrope walker- the Empire's token "Old Rightist"- who can always be relied upon – to support more war and empire in the final analysis.
Anything he says is misdirection or just flat out stupid- like this article. One owned fraud talking about an owned fraud political movement- par for the course for this hired pen.

Finegold was the leading advocate of surpressing free speech of the people who opposed him. He has been a tool of the Lobby his whole career. I am happy to say that I was part of the effort to overthrow the unconstitutional McCain Finegold bill. Finegold and McCain both were out to surpress free speech before elections. It was nothing but an incombant protection act. Finegold only voted independent, when his vote didn't count. When he votes rto defund Israel, maybe I'll listen to you. The libertarian, conservative, businessman Johnson is far more likly to that. On top of that he was a totally worthless senator.

Patrick asks why America is still in Japan and Korea. Is he an idiot?. America is there because of its imperial objectives, its stealthy takeover of the world.
Problem is that it's run out of money. It can't afford to takeover the world anymore. The Soviet Union suffered the same fate.
Yet the U.S. is now considering the invasion of Pakistan and the nuking of Iran while it's still militarily engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If you want to see collective insanity, look at America!

Those of you who are genuinely pro small government Libertarian, and against police state, empire, domestic spying, the Federal Reserve, etc, better start speaking up and making your voices loud and clear. The public perception boosted by the no doubt lying MSM is that the Dick Armey/astroturf "Freedom Works" Sarah Palin pro war Zionist faction is clearly in charge and setting the agenda especially for the election.
If you do speak up and are somehow miraculously able to be heard, many honorable anti authoritarian activist lefties like myself will have your back against both the neo-cons and Obamabots.
