GOP Blank Check for War?
High among the blunders of history was the “blank cheque” Kaiser Wilhelm gave Vienna, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, to deal with the Serbs as they saw fit.
Five weeks later, Vienna cashed the check and declared war, after Belgrade refused to submit to all 10 demands of an ultimatum. Russia mobilized; Germany and France followed. And war came, the bloodiest in all of European history, with 9 million soldiers in their graves.
Since June 1914, a “blank check” given by one nation to another for war has been regarded as strategic folly.
Thus it is startling to learn 47 House Republicans just signed on to H.R. 1553 declaring unequivocal “support for Israel’s right to use all means necessary to confront and eliminate nuclear threats posed by Iran … including the use of military force.”
These Republicans have just given Tel Aviv a blank check for a preemptive war that Israel, unless it uses its nuclear weapons, can start but not finish. Fighting and finishing that war would fall to the armed forces of the United States.
Whom do these Republicans represent?
The Pentagon has made clear that with two wars of nearly a decade’s duration bleeding us, we do not want a third war with Iran. For while easy to predict how such a war begins, with air and missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, no one can know how it ends.
Indeed, how would Israel reach its targets in Iran?
Turkey would not allow Israeli over-flights. The route over Jordan and Iraq would require U.S. military complicity, for we control Iraqi air space. Would Riyadh permit Israel to use its airspace to attack Iran, knowing Tehran could create havoc in the Gulf states and oil patch of northeastern Arabia?
The Israeli air force could destroy the nuclear power plant at Bushehr, the heavy water reactor at Arak, and the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz. But Israel cannot follow up and destroy all the dispersed nuclear facilities and missile sites of Iran. And no one knows what would follow.
How would Iran retaliate? Missile strikes on Tel Aviv? A missile barrage form Hezbollah igniting another Israeli-Lebanon war? How long could the United States stand by and watch Israel bombarded?
Indeed, the principal purpose and result of an Israeli preemptive war on Iran, bringing retaliation on Israel, would be to drag America in to fight and finish a war Israel had begun.
In whose interest is that? And who dreamed this resolution up?
If America joined the attack, we would have to complete the destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities and destroy its missile sites, coastal defenses, navy, air force, and hundreds of speedboats to prevent attacks on U.S. warships and tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
We would have to strike all the Republican Guard bases near Iraq and Afghanistan to protect our troops. We would have to kill thousands of Iranians.
Would Iran retaliate by inciting the Mahdi Army to kill our men in Iraq? Would it set Hezbollah to kidnap or kill Americans in Lebanon? Would Iran retaliate for its civilian dead by activating agents to commit terrorism in the United States? No one knows.
In 1986, Ronald Reagan ordered air strikes on Libya to retaliate for Qaddafi’s bombing of the Berlin discotheque. In 1989, in retaliation, Qaddafi blew up Pan Am 103. Death toll: 270 men, women, and children. It’s called blowback.
The House Republican resolution supports Israel’s use of “all means necessary” to “eliminate nuclear threats” that represent an “immediate and existential threat to the State of Israel.”
What “immediate and existential threat” are they talking about?
It is Israel that has hundreds of atomic bombs. Iran has no atom bombs, has tested no atomic device, has diverted none of its low-enriched uranium out of the sight of U.N. inspectors and has offered to ship half of its LEU to Turkey in exchange for fuel rods for a U.S.-built reactor that makes medical isotopes. And half of the centrifuges at Natanz have broken down.
Undeniably, Iran is gaining knowledge of how to build a bomb. But such a decision would seem idiotic from Iran’s standpoint, risking Israeli or U.S. nuclear strikes and provoking Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt to follow suit and acquire the bomb, leaving Iran even more isolated and vulnerable.
Three years ago, 16 U.S. intelligence agencies reached a consensus that Iran had given up on the project of building a bomb. Do these Republicans have hard evidence Iran is diverting its enriched uranium to such a bomb? If so, where is it?
Have these Republicans forgotten what happened to their colleagues in 2006, who voted Bush that blank check for war on Iraq in 2002?
Why, with all the issues going for them, House Republicans would announce full-throated support for a preemptive war on Iran that Americans would have to fight and finish, escapes me.
But if this is where a Republican House would take America, into yet another war, best that we know it before voting this fall.

"But if this is where a Republican House would take America, into yet another war, best that we know it before voting this fall."
Both sides of the aisle will cheer for Israel to bring ruin and death to Americans and our culture. It's a common ritual for the bipartisan Death Cult. The Death cult speaks in the language of jobs and domestic priorities, it thinks its fetish is what Americans want, and many do because they are drinking the same fantastic kool aid.

"And who dreamed this resolution up?"
Ultimately, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious 'authorities'; who, on a daily basis, brainwash people with the theological 'justification' for such genocide in the service of the nation-state.
This is the "beast of the earth" religious establishment being a loyal servant to the "beast of the sea" political establishment, as is symbolized in Revelations 13:11-12.

Israel'e desire to exert and enjoy hegemony over ME will bring it in direct confrontation with US. Israel will then use China/India and weak angry muslim population against West. Israel's rlentless quest for American trade and military secrets point to one direction that is the capacity to withstand any US pressure. Iran is a pain in the neck to Israel. Israeli design on Lebanon and Syria and West Bank are somehow unrealized from Israel expects to lasso these these renegade elements but not until Iran is reduced to like Pakistan /Afghanistan/Iraq .Once Israel gets Iran out of the way, the whole Middle east will be up for grab by Israel. Armageddon will arrive for that what Evangelics want and stupified Americans will join the claque only to see its own demise. 500 years history of enlightemnet will disappear as has the fates befallen on city states of Renaissance-Italy, United Republic of Holland and Portugese empire

Mr Buchanan is right to think that the whole point of a wildcat Israeli strike against Iran would be to drag the US into a war. The encouraging part is that such a strike would be a last, desperate throw of the dice by an Israel that already saw itself as beaten. Iran, for that very reason, would probably not react by attacking Israel but would go to the UN in righteous indignation as the victim of agression. Such an attack would also send the "coalition" scuttling for home, so as not to get blamed for the mess (most of all, perhaps, by their own electors!). As for overflight rights, the only way for Israel to attack Iran without flying over another country would be to fly down to the US base on (British) Deigo Garcia, fuel up and come in over Iran's coastline. US bombers from there have bombed Baghdad but one wonders what the British would think (I'm guessing they wouldn't be asked in advance!). The war-weary British public, in any event, would probably be furious!

Nice theory Mr. Kenny, Whether valid or not, I myself cannot judge.. But such thinking out of the box is what keeps this place up to speed. and who knows who may harvest the ideas put up here… Perhaps such a scenario would have the Brits humbled enough to give the place back to the natives from whom they shamelessly stole it and scattered those natives to the wind.. As for the GOP bill H.R. 1553, it is only a funding effort from there Reps. to get AIPAC money for their election. It's just business as usual in the sold out Congress… America's No. 1 Welfare has billions of American taxpayer paid aid dollars to bribe American Politicians, pay for spies to spy on her patron and subvert any effort to rid the body politic of the U.S. of her baggage.

The bill is based on a repetition of the usual lies:____The resolution was introduced by Rep. Louie Gohmert [R-Texas] and 46 co-sponsors. ____House Resolution 1553 “condemns the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for its threats of ‘annihilating’ the United States and the State of Israel, for its continued support of international terrorism, and for its incitement of genocide of the Israeli people.”

Mr. Buchanan, it shouldn't come as a surprise to you about Congress passing your mentioned legislation. They've been doing that for years. Congress is bought and paid for by the israeli lobby. Money buys favors in this country. That's what they call capitalism. I agree with your points for the U.S. not to be directed by Israel. However, Until the people in this country get out of their brainwashing mode, and recognize that a small group of minorities controls almost all foreign policy decisions, we will continue to do Israeli's dirty work. A country of 7 million controlling the world is not so far fetched anymore, is it?

Well said, and true.
This is the mindset that is allowing the US to be used as a tool against Israel's enemies.
The US is supposed to be a sovereign nation.
How do you use a sovereign nation as a tool against your enemies?
You infiltrate their government, position your shills in high places and direct said nation into war against your enemies, while making them believe your enemies are their enemies.

Please check your facts. World War II was the bloodiest conflict in European history. A low estimate of the military deaths for the Soviet Union alone is just under 9 million, with at least 5 million for the Third Reich.

The americans are about to be dragged, once again, into israel's belligerent war crimes. This situation is akin to the american movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales". In that movie, a character named Fletcher found himself dragged into a situation he did not start and was not responsible for. Fletcher lamented, "Because of what you did here today, I've got to kill that man."
Its also notable that the idiots who drafted H.R. 1553 continue to refer to israel as an ally. Specifically, the drafters erroneously state that israel is a "…faithful ally…". People responsible for drafting american law, especially law concerning foreign policy, should be somewhat familiar with both american law and international law. These clowns, in their blind adherence to and support for anything israeli, ignore the fact that israel is not, and cannot legally be, an ally to any nation because it has not established its borders. Since irsrael's inception, it has been an ever-expanding rogue state that continuously kills its neighbours and steals their lands. Google Earth is all one needs to verify that israel has "disputed borders" with Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. This rogue 'state' cannot establish borders, and thus cannot be an ally of the u.s. or any other nation, because its not finished stealing land yet. For these reasons, and erroneously identifying israel as an "ally", the bill is factually defective on its face. It should be challenged as such – but it won't be.
Added to this, israel cannot control its blood lust even within its own "borders" as proven by its many incursions into and thefts of Palestinian lands. While these actions do not affect whether israel can have any legal alliances with other 'real' nations, they do reveal the true nature of the israeli 'state'. That is a rabid, lawless, untrustworthy, unpredictable, apartheid regime that will invade, occupy, and kill its neighbours and its Palestinian citizens while stealing their land.
Since america has volunteered to be it's willing puppet, both when ruled by republicans and when ruled by democrats (albeit with some feigned resistance), israel may not ever stop expanding.
Ask yourself; what nation with any capabilities has shown any inclination to stop american – backed israeli aggression? That's right – none. Clearly, this will not end until the israelis are satisfied – and they don't ever seem to be.

israel is creating a cause for war against Lebanon by the killings at the Lebanon/Israel border.
Israel attempted before to overrun southern Lebanon and take the Litani River from Lebanon. It is about water and Israel will create a cause to invade. This is so Israel can have fresh water by taking it militarily from Lebanon.

What is always interesting in history is how it plays out unexpectedly, how it never lets anyone feel for long that they are "on the right side of history." Thus, a small state like Israel with a lot of trouble from its neighbors, cannot know for sure when it strikes a blow that the US will be able to follow through successfully. It might be that someone else in the wings will make it painful and expensive for the US to follow through. We are dependent on midEast oil not just to fill our tanks at home, but (perhaps more significantly) to fill our tanks on our bases around the globe. We hear Barney Frank joining with Ron Paul to scale back our imperial reach – the two men may have different motives. I know Frank supported the resolution supporting Israel's attacks on Lebanon's infrastructure. So maybe he understands that in the event of an attack on Iran, this power base of the US would be in jeopardy, so he wants it scaled back first. One may guess why this odd couple have the same goals.
