It had to happen: the rise
of a “counter-jihadist” terrorist outfit that is the mirror image
of al-Qaeda. That it first arose in Norway, rather than, say, in the US,
is just a coincidence, although I’m sure Anders Behring Breivik, the
perpetrator of the Norwegian mass murder in Utoya, has his American
collaborators, as he claimed in his manifesto, “2083: A Declaration
of European Independence,” [.pdf] and an accompanying video. Indeed, a good
many of the sources he cites in “2083″ – which is basically a compendium
of previously published works by others – are American. Material from
David Horowitz’s website, Frontpagemag.com, figures prominently,
along with articles taken verbatim from the Horowitz-affiliated “Jihad
Watch,” run by professional hater and make-believe “scholar” Robert
Spencer.
Breivik’s “book” is
a mishmash, half diary of his careful preparations for the attack thrown
together with anti-Muslim materials and boilerplate conservative rhetoric
about the importance of faith, family, and community – Breivik lifts
an entire section of a screed on “Cultural Conservatism” by the
late Paul Weyrich – totaling well over a thousand pages. Thankfully,
we don’t have to plough through this disjointed “compendium,”
as he calls it – which shows signs of being hastily thrown together
in preparation for his international debut as the Norwegian Timothy
McVeigh, just like his Facebook page and his Twitter account. Breivik
created a much more coherent video version which gives us a lot more
clues about why he murdered 90-plus (at last count) of his fellow Norwegians
in the name of fighting Islam.
In the video, Breivik targets
the Enemy, which he calls “cultural Marxism.” So you thought communism
failed with the fall of the Soviet Union and the liberation of Eastern
Europe? Wrong! In reality – according to Breivik – the Marxists,
under the banner of the Frankfurt School theorists, infiltrated the
mainstream political parties, academia, and even exercised a dominant
influence on the “global capitalists.” Their goal: the eradication
of European cultural identity, to be subsumed under a multi-culturalist
“EUSSR.” The present rulers of the West are cultural “traitors,”
who are conspiring openly with Islamists to reestablish the old Ottoman
Empire in Europe and pave the way for the “Islamization” of the
entire continent.
The second part of the video
details the threat posed by an inherently aggressive and implacable
Islam, the long history of Islamic imperialism, and the submission of
the subject peoples to “dhimmitude.” This section relies heavily
on the writings of the professional Islamophobes such as Robert Spencer,
Bat Ye’or, Andrew G. Bostom, Bernard Lewis, etc., that reads like
the table of contents for a routine edition of Horowitz’s online magazine. It is neoconservatism, of the old cold war variety,
with the only difference being that International Islam has taken the
place of International Communism as our unsleeping foe.
Part three of the video is
the most successful and creative: it presents a pantheon of heroes –
every European military figure or ruler who ever fought a battle against
the Ottomans – from Charles Martel to Vlad the Impaler, and even including
Czar Nicholas II. I have to add that all this is accompanied by soaring
“Celtic”-sounding music, like something out of the Lord of the
Rings score: interspersed with images of Crusaders, and such historical
figures as El Cid, Richard the Lionhearted, and events such as the Battle
of Tours and the Ottoman siege of Vienna, this section links the sympathetic
viewer to a usable past, an heroic tradition of which he can feel a
part. This segues easily into the fourth and final part, which is chiefly
exhortatory – a call to action. The cultural Marxist “traitors”
must be hunted down and exterminated: he is very clear about this. A
Cultural Marxist Hunting Permit is depicted, so as to make Breivik’s
strategic principle unmistakable. These new “Crusaders,” then, are
to be an army of assassins – a “Christian” Western version of
al-Qaeda.
The similarity of Osama bin
Laden’s vision and Breivik’s is remarkable, right down to the glorification
of martyrdom which prefaces part three of the video. It is as if someone
had sat down and deliberately limned bin Laden and the theoreticians
of jihadism, inverting the ends but consciously imitating the means
and the Manichean mindset. This is where the real passion comes across,
where the viewer is asked to identify himself as an heroic figure –
all this kind of appeal lacks is a promise of virgins in the afterlife.
However, the powerful emotional punch packed by this very effective
propaganda ploy contrasts sharply with the odd, jerrybuilt nature of
Breivik’s rationale for his murderous enterprise – as if the involved
ideological narrative is almost an afterthought to the actual deed.
After all, Breivik rails endlessly against Muslims – but winds up
murdering Norwegians, none of whom were Muslim. I don’t quite know
what to make of this, except that the whole thing seems rather contrived,
although to what end is unclear.
What is clear, however, is
that the “Knights Templar Europe” is not merely the imaginary construct
of a deranged mind, but an actual organization that seems to have been
founded at a meeting in London which Breivik attended in 2002. He claims
to have collaborators, and he specifically mentions one “European-American”
who attended the founding meeting. Norwegian police are saying he acted
alone, but this seems impossible: he began preparations for the attack
in 2009, and the sheer logistics of carrying out such an operation –
undetected – would argue that he had help.
It also appears as if Breivik
has links to the English Defense League, a virulent gang of violent
skinheads who target Muslims and have been gaining strength in the
Clockwork Orange-y Britain of today. Financed by British businessman Alan Lake, the EDL has been endorsed by the
American “counter-jihadists” grouped around “Stop the Islamization
of America” and its European affiliate: Breivik’s agenda was eerily
prefigured by Lake, who stated on Norwegian television that “such
people should be executed,” referring to British Muslims and presumably
others he considers “seditious.”
For years, neoconservatives
have been telling us the decadent West is no match for the holy warriors
of Islam, and what is needed is a revival of the Crusader spirit so
that we can defeat our Eternal Enemy once and for all. We in the West
must be put on a permanent war footing, they tell us, in order to put
“an end to evil,” as two of them put it in a book title. Like the
neocons, Breivik and the EDL are staunch supporters of Israel: the Israeli flag flies at EDL rallies, and the Jewish state comes in
for undiluted praise in the Knights Templar manifesto.
Before Breivik was identified
as the culprit, neocon columnist Jennifer Rubin rushed into print with
an assessment by two of her fellow neocon “experts” – Gary Schmitt
and Thomas Joscelyn – that this was the work of al-Qaeda, and concluded:
“This is a sobering reminder
for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists….
Some irresponsible lawmakers on both sides of the aisle…would have
us believe that enormous defense cuts would not affect our national
security. Obama would have us believe that al-Qaeda is almost caput
and that we can wrap up things in Afghanistan. All of these are rationalizations
for doing something very rash, namely curbing our ability to defend
the United States and our allies in a very dangerous world.”
Well, it is a sobering reminder, but not in the way Rubin intended: it’s a reminder that ideas have consequences. It’s not surprising someone took neoconservative propaganda seriously enough to go the terrorist route: Breivik is merely carrying out the program advocated by the David Horowitz’s, the Robert Spencers, the Pam Gellers of this sad and sorry world. The one difference is that Breivik and his fellow Knights are taking direct action, without bothering to employ the agency of government.

Neoconservativism is the enemy of liberty, and the enemy of United States sovereignty. It always seeks not to be a choice of ideas, but the dominant ideology. It is basically religious theology.
What kind of sick person murders the young :14-19 year-olds in a helpless way because of political ideology? The young have more ideals than experience. A 32 year old man slaughtering youngsters and then surrendering to the mercies of police. Disgusting.. As antiwar.com's mission statement includes…war increases Statism – statism reduces liberty. Are all wars wrong? I know many are wars of choice.

All that is lacking here is a Pipes/Malkin call for "internment." Of course, 'internment' would require the proper number of executions. Deathhouses? Numbering of Muslims, recording those numberings, and boxcars. Lots and lots of boxcars. Yellow patches bearing an eerie resemblance to the Crescent and Star.
Simply oodles and gobs of decent "faith driven" Amerikans would stand on the streets and cheer.
I don't know, I keep hearing echoes of "Quisling" from some dark forbidden part of my collective memory…

Quite simple, Justin.
Like all radicals who lock themselves in an echo chamber, this guy honestly thought that his views – and more specifically, his methods – had widespread support. As a result, he expected his attack to trigger an uprising by like-minded people.
It’s the same logic that underpinned many Islamist terror attack of the past 30 years from the assassination of Sadat, to the 1976-82 Sunni uprising in Syria, to the 1997 massacre in Egypt to 9/11.
Islamists always expected the Muslim masses to rise up. But it never happened. They misjudged their own people in exactly the way this Norwegian terrorist misjudged his.

Justin, I know that you are one of those seemingly insane people who despises any and all conspiracy theories, but I'd say this is a very likely candidate for consideration as a false flag attack, with Breivik as a confused, angry, manipulated patsy, perhaps. The whole thing seems jerry rigged and at the same time too competent, and there are so many red flags – the fact that there was apparently a bomb drill the day before, the long delay in cops getting to the island, etc. – one really has to wonder if he did this alone. And it's so weird that he killed all these kids. It doesn't seem to fit his claimed ideology, and his surrender to the cops really contradicts his claim to some kind of warrior status. What kind of warrior kills a bunch of defenseless kids and then surrenders to armed cops who can actually fight back? Weird, weird, weird.

As for the rise of "the mirror image of al-Qaeda", the first and most vivid exposure of this was for me at least the 2004 BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares by Adam Curtis. The only thing always lacking as evidence was the mirroring at the level of the individual, while all we saw so far was violence by state vs violence by cell. Or as Justin wrote: "The one difference is that Breivik and his fellow Knights are taking direct action, without bothering to employ the agency of government".

One things is that for us Americans it's probably difficult to understand the issue, especially if one has never been to a large European city, or even small town, and see the large immigration of Islamic peoples. Perhaps we are better off in so far as almost all our immigrants are Western and Christian, and somewhat modern. That doesn't mean that the Breivik's whole pseudo ideological mish mash makes any sense- ant-islam, pro-zionism, pro-israel, pro-freemasonry, etc. Somewhat interesting though that it wasn't for him as much about race (as the media itched to portray it initially "blond blue eyes murderer), or even about religion but about culture, which is why he targeted his own people but whom he saw as part of the cultural marxism responsible for the decline of the West. The event that changed him was supposedly NATO's bombing of Serbia, where the reverse happened. The cultural marxists murdered those who were defending Western ideals from Islam.
Regardless, neo-cons must be ecstatic. I'm sure they would have much preferred he kill Muslims, but nevertheless, it's a start. Get some whitey to start a personal war against islam and its supporters, and without having to rely on US politicians. Watch them expand their hate filled propaganda, especially with upcoming Palestinian UN vote.

Oh Justin. You went and did it again. A "counter Jihadist"? Really? Did I read that right?
Allow me to clue you in on something, that "counter" was there well before the "Jihadist[s]" came to the scene. It was bubbling under the surface especially in the US.
To pretend as though it's al-Qaeda's fault that people like Pamela Geller, Daniel Pipes or this Christian terrorist from Norway came along is not only inaccurate, it's delusional.
Zionist Neo-Conservatives have LONG used Orientalism to dehumanize and vilify Muslims and Arabs because it served Israel's interests. So whether "Jihadists" as you call them were there or not after 9/11 was irrelevant as far as they were concerned.
Besides, when the Cold War ended, the US needed a new enemy and the former Mujahideen from Afghanistan served the empire's interests. A quick look at prominent Neo-Conservatives in the US shows that many of them are Zionists. And as you know, Israel has existed since 1948, hardly a phenomenon of the late 1990s.
To pretend as though it all started as some kind of response to the attacks of September 11, 2001 is myopic, to put it mildly.
But, this goes back to your own sense of exceptionalism and denial of responsibility, a bias, much like you used to think that the West was somehow a beacon of enlightenment while considering the East to be a haven for hordes of barbarians. Over time you moved away from that thinking, but now you have exposed yet another bias that resides very deep in your consciousness.
So what now? Are you going to whitewash this murderer's actions as a mere "counter Jihadist" response.
My people don't initiate violence and terrorism, they only respond to violence and terrorism perpetrated by those primitive Others. That's your rationale, eh, Justin? It's no different than the MSM when they report that Israeli fighter planes bombed Gaza in retaliation.
Inherent in your bias is the assumption that the West has put up with so much crap over the years that it deserves some praise for its restraint. You're something else. Describing you as a moody progressive would be a complement. Consistency is not your game, is it?

I'd guess he is aware of them but uncomfortable with them and trying to understand or reconcile them. He has been trying to open discussion about the racism and supremacist attitudes that are inherent in some of Judaism.
By the way, we've seen the absolute catastrophe that mass immigration has brought to existing communities in Palestine, Tibet, Taiwan, and, yes, in the Americas (after the arrival of people from Europe). No thanks – never again.
One would think you would have more sympathy for existing communities versus mass immigration given your supposed rejection of Zionism.

Either you aren't corresponding with the person you think you are corresponding with, or I don't know truly know myself.
Ethnic lobbies refers primarily to J-ewish and Asian (East and Indian) pressure groups. I don't believe Muslims possess much power in the United States and, even if they did, I'm not sure it would concern me. Unlike Judaism and Hinduism, Islam is an inclusive political ideology.
The United States doesn't need any more people beyond those of us who are here now and our posterity. I'm not interested in our country becoming as overcrowded as Asia and Latin America, nor in exhausting our natural resources.
On terrorism, I believe that honest people who are sincere about addressing the root of conflicts should dispense with using the word entirely due to its connotations. And that goes for discussion of Behring Breivik, the Palestinian resistance, and the Arab commandos that bombed the World Trade Center and Pentagon 10 years ago. (Alternatively, I would be in favor of referring to ALL political violence as terrorism, state and non-state.)

I am saying that he was agitated primarily by concern about a massive influx of immigrants into Norway, and into Europe generally, and the threat that revolutionary demographic change poses to the well being of native Norwegians and to the continuity of their culture. We need to acknowledge that those concerns are reasonable and realize that if the displacement of native peoples in Europe and the United States proceeds apace we will probably witness more unfortunate violence like this in the future.

In aftermath of this atrocity, I wonder if Norway will go through similar chest-beating and misdirected diagnoses as we do, when terror acts or psychotic mass-murder occur here. We can count on political poles fingering their pet demons. For the Left, it's boonie insurrection reacting to mass immigration and resultant loss of honkie privileges – whatever that means. For the Right, ii's somehow work of jihadists planning to take over America and dress our women in sacks. At least for sheer entertainment, we have conspiracy fabulists overcomplicating a crazy act into a dark Masonic plot with possible UFO implications.
It's a wonder anyone can believe random mass killing of everything that moves strikes a righteous blow, and prompted by it, we'll all rise up and join his cause. This bozo, Timothy McVeigh and all other blood-drenched, self-enlisted soldiers for truth and justice seem to believe this insane fantasy – that their acts are somehow more than just slaughter for slaughter's sake. Why is terror imbued with political legitimacy it doesn't have? You kill dozens of people simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time? Yeah, I want YOU in charge.

One neglected aspect of this tragedy is the fact that the 'Islamization' of Europe is due in no small part to the Zio-American sanctions and wars that have driven millions from Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Afghanistan, Libya, Lebanon and elsewhere.
Even though Breivik murdered children, that criminal act does not diminish the fact that Europeans have a legitimate stake in sustaining their cultural, ethnic and religious traditions. Unfortunately, many European nationalists like Breivik have failed to identify the Israeli factor behind Europe's ongoing cultural and demographic transformation.
Indeed, most of the disruptions emanating from the Middle East and Central Asia can be linked directly to aggressive neocon policies. Expect more blow-back.

I don't see how that gives you or any or your ilk the "right" to move to Norway, or anywhere else in Europe sir. Both the Bakan and Iberian peninsulas were conquered for centuries by Africans and Asians. Note how Khan makes no effort to show how immigration is good. He merely presents it as some kind of retroactive punishment for events that occurred 500 years ago. And the people in question aren't even the ones affected. Supposedly some muslim in the Maghreb gets a free ticket to welfare-heaven Europe because Cortez overwhelmed the Aztecs 500 years ago. NUTS.

What this issue really comes down to is tribalism and ethnic national identity.
We sometimes lose sight of it in the multicultural West, but in most nations ethnicity, nationality, race and religion are tightly intertwined, sometimes interchangeable.
A blonde Swede could not move to Mogadishu and be thought of as "Somali." An ethnic Han Chinese person could not move to Iraq and become an “Iraqi” or an Arab. They could live in their new country for decades and would never be thought of as a member of the tribe.
In the West this sort of ethnic identity has been challenged since the 1960s in a way that would NEVER be tolerated in most other places.
Can you imagine the government in a Muslim country opening its doors to millions of non-Muslim immigrants? The result would be a pogrom, not a lone gunman.
Generally speaking, the multicultural experiment in the West has gone as well as it could be expected to, all things considered. But every now and then we can expect to deal with militants like this Norwegian guy. In fact we can expect more of them.

What the hell prevents them from observing their "cultural, ethnic and religious traditions" now? Does having different kinds of people living in the same COUNTRY somehow render the pursuit of such things impossible? Has no one ever heard of or been to Los Angeles?
I do agree with your point about the causes of migrations from the middle east. Those causes will only get worse as long as there's petroleum in the region. Even then there's still that huge cache of rare earth elements in Afghanistan. Those are needed so that Chinese children can make the mobile devices we all can't live without.

The recent director of Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights, Michael Ignatieff, proposed in the New York Times in May 2004 that we should give U.S. presidents the authority to preventively detain U.S. citizens and to engage in “coercive interrogations” should the United States experience another terrorist attack like 9/11. Ignatieff argued that “defeating terror requires violence” and “might also require coercion, secrecy, deception, even violation of rights.” “Sticking too firmly to the rule of law simply allows terrorists too much leeway to exploit our freedoms,” he said.[1]
In addition to Harvard’s top human rights academic arguing on behalf of “torture lite,” Harvard Law School’s Alan Dershowitz supports “torture warrants” so that U.S. presidents can torture detainees in so-called “ticking bomb” cases.

You are a shame upon the mondoweiss website.
Mass immigration has been catastrophic for the Palestinians, as it has been almost everywhere. It will certainly be catastrophic for the traditional peoples of the United States and Europe. That you seem not to care a whit about the rights of local communities to rule themselves, to defend themselves from foreign invasion, and to determine their membership reveals, frankly, a genocidal impulse. Is that your agenda, to destroy communities?

I haven't blamed immigrants, much less lay the blame squarely on them. Rather, I have pointed to immigration (not immigrants) as the principal motivation behind this tragedy.
Viewed from that perspective, I suppose Behring Breivek's action had a certain logic to it. He didn't go after immigrants (who can blame them for accepting an invitation?), he went after one of the groups that is responsible for allowing them to move to Norway in such large numbers.

The only scenario I can put this in is an operation gladio scenario. It fits the glove like o.j. simpsons.
I want to know where this guy did his military service, which is compulsory in norway, if it was at Kolsås, then there is a direct link to AFNORTH and operation Gladio.
In 1957, the director of the Norwegian secret service NIS, Vilhelm Evang, protested strongly against the pro-active intelligence activities at AFNORTH, as described by the chairman of CPC: "[NIS] was extremely worried about activities carried out by officers at Kolsås. This concerned SB, Psywar and Counter Intelligence." These activities supposedly included the blacklisting of Norwegians. SHAPE denied these allegations. Eventually, the matter was resolved in 1958, after Norway was assured about how stay-behind networks were to be operated.[65][page needed]
In 1978, the police discovered an arms cache and radio equipment at a mountain cabin and arrested Hans Otto Meyer, a businessman accused of being involved in selling illegal alcohol. Meyer claimed that the weapons were supplied by Norwegian intelligence. Rolf Hansen, defense minister at that time, stated the network was not in any way answerable to NATO and had no CIA connection

If you consider that morality is an adaptation of the survival instinct and its beneficiary is the culture in which it develops, you can begin to understand how the cultures of the neocons or Jews can consider it moral and proper to attack and kill the people of the Islamic culture. And, of course, the muslims are able to think similarly of the Jews..
Morality can be described in terms of moral spheres: harm, fairness, community, authority, and purity. Each of these areas of behavior developed to promote the survivability of a culture (in group or community) but can be used to aggress against competing cultures if they are hijacked by authorities. Bush's attack on Iraq is a good example.
Breivik had a different task: he had to hijack his own morality.

Since white Europeans aren't replacing their numbers, the flood of immigrants into Europe is necessary to keep the European welfare states going. Underfunded welfare liabilities mean that relatively fewer productive workers are paying the taxes required to support the growing number of retirees and others who are idle for all kinds of reasons. The only way to correct that imbalance is with immigration. Young workers from Africa and the Middle East are enticed to come to Europe to be fleeced to keep the dependent idle white Europeans alive.
How many of those who deplore the Islamification of Europe are willing either to give up their welfare benefits or have more children themselves in order to save European "civilization?" The modern welfare state model dating back to the time of Bismarck is doomed. Demographics will be its undoing.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
That anyone is taking this attack, its alleged Oswald-esque perpetrator, or the whole neo-con counter jihadist story at face value tells me that despite the events and revelations of the past decade, we are all still aimless sheep ready to be led to slaughter.
Call it conspiracy if you want, but check your facts first. If you are reading this story, and especially believing a word of it, you are what the Bilderbergers call a "worthless eater". The FACT is there is not enough oil on this planet to sustain 6-7 billion of us. When we get to 10 billion in around a decade, forget it. EVERYTHING you touch and see and eat is heavily derived from oil, even your stupid windmills and solar panels. And as supplies dwindle demand is growing exponentially. The global movers see this and have for years. And say what you want about them, but understand they are the people who get things done. So when there's no longer enough to go around, they who have built your world, will not want or have to share. Instead these people, as always, have a plan. And what plan could be better than nudging the world's billion plus Muslims and the world's billion plus Christians (conveniently settled in the two most resource rich places in the world, the middle east and North America) into killing each other, and doing so willingly and in the dying belief that their death is a sacrifice or righteousness.
Four or five of said people own ALL THE MEDIA IN THE WORLD. And from this media, our new Oswald and his inevitable accomplices garnered the point of view that led to this attack. DON'T BE A DOPE. The conspiracy is not, "was this one rogue or many", nor is it "is right wing media responsible". OF COURSE! YES TO BOTH! what idiot could deny it. The real conspiracy happened long ago, when media became a place where extreme points of view were nurtured and touted as a gift from the first amendment. Think about it, does the fact that Glenn Beck, Pam Geller and Ariana Huffington are free to have extreme points of view mean they are worthy of primetime billing or endless attention. No, but even the many of you who hate them somehow accept that these extreme points justify their public prominence. You fear or deny the truth that the people who put them on TV and in print WANT YOU TO THINK LIKE THAT. It's just a big nudge. You work in a PC world where you are beaten down every day by logical contradictions that dehumanize you. You have more and more of the fruits of your labor squeezed from you, while being bombarded with more things to want. They demonize the idea of all religion, lest you should seek inner peace there. And finally when you're worn out from it and turn on the TV, there are a bunch of people telling you who to hate for it. And no matter what your specific situation, be you black, white, gay, unemployed, Christian, Muslim, etc, there is a tailor made enemy for you to hate.
And when you get 2-3 billion empty, dehumanized people angry and willing to kill and die just to have one moment of meaning in their life you get…pretty much the world we have today. The time is now. All this partisanship, looming deficits, looming QE3 IS all supposed to be the trigger that prompts us to act on our programmed anger and kill each other off, just like Brevik and his clan. This is the call for a few billion of us to fire that first shot and kill ourselves, while the movers of the world sip champagne in their private bunkers and divide up all the soon-to-be-free land and resources amongst themselves. I fear things will go EXACTLY as planned. You all make it so easy.
Again, prove it wrong before you call it conspiracy…

Seems like the same contradictions with Israel – but that socialist state has temporarily solved the problems of the scheme with immigration from the former Soviet Union – and of course many of those people are not only not religious Jews, but they are probably less ethnically so than prior generations. Anyway, they are non-Muslim, non-Mideastern, and therefore considered a solution in a state which has trouble accepting actual practicing Jews from places like Ethiopia because they do not look like Europeans. Contradictions add up over time. Then there is the "guest-worker" solution proposed by some right wingers, as though all people want is to work for a daily wage and have no future desires for a better life for themselves and their posterity. I am a believer in the most inspired words of JFK and MLK, which is always about a world of real hope. If you don't believe in that, you are going to get hell from your fellow men, who'll see straight through your exploitation of them anyway.

Misremembering salient facts is one thing – but the 'factoid' that absolutely fails a smell test, is the idea that a sole perpetrator is able to kill 82 people in one event. (It's so obviously horse-shit that the media has had to run the idea that he 'lured' new victims by saying "I'm here to help". That would have worked ONCE, and once only… again, a seemingly plausible narrative that evaporates under scrutiny).
Anybody who has had any experience with shooting at people, knows that killing ten people by yourself – even in a crowded environment – is really, REALLY hard.
An automatic weapon makes the first five or so easy – 'spray and pray' into a crowd, for example – but then when the crowd disperses 'at pace', the task becomes impossible. For example – Baruch Goldstein killed 29 and wounded 100-add, but he was at the door of a place with ONE EXIT (and yet again there were witnesses that saw a second perpetrator) .
Folks raised on Rambo movies – where the steroided hulk slings a 60 under his arm, blasts away, and hit 20 guys in 5 seconds (while his enemies are incapable of hitting anything except the dirt behind his feet) – are simply unaware of the technical prowess required to acquire and despatch multiple fleeing targets. I am mates with some of the most ghastly trained dudes going around, but they couldn't do it in a month of Sundays.
The ammo alone – figure 5-6 shots per person (short barrel, moving targets, first killzone, no real kill-training) and you're talking about AT LEAST a dozen 30-round mags; more like 15 or 16.
12 mags is 6kg (~14lb – one stone) carry if the ammo is 5.56mm and you assume he finishes the event with zero ammo left. Add 3kg for a fully loaded assault rifle (e.g., an M4) and you're carrying an extra 21lb. The carry declines as the event unfolds, obviously, but add a stone and a half to a guy, and you've got a recipe for low mobility.
If the weapon was a 7.62 (more killing power – 'through and through' rounds with more ablative damage), the sums get even worse. An AK weighs almsot 10lb, and the ammo and mags are also heavier… you can't get away with less ammo though, because they're harder to use (more kick, shitty sights).
So either this guy is a super-soldier of a type never seen in human history (and his equipment was PERFECT… no jams, instant reloads… like a video game)… or the media narrative is bullshit.
In summary: an 80-person body count is a team event. There is not a soldier alive who would even try to contradict that.
So the 'conspiratorial nonsense' (seriously? you didn't go for 'anti-Semite' as the first hollow trope?) is far more plausible than the mainstream narrative.
If the guy did this by himself, there is no way he would be jailed – he would be tooled up and sent to the front line, where he would win Afghanistan and Iraq in a week, because the motherfucker would be the gretest soldier in the history of military affairs.

I have an uneasy feeling that my principled disagreement with neocons is being played. It is easy for advocates of peace to believe any ill of warmongering Muslim-haters, but so many things just don't make sense in this whole story.
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
